The USAID Donald M. Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship Program seeks to attract outstanding young people who are interested in pursuing careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). If you want to work on the front lines of some of the most pressing global challenges of our times — poverty, hunger, injustice, disease, environmental degradation, climate change, conflict and violent extremism – the Foreign Service of the U.S. Agency for International Development provides an opportunity to advance U.S. foreign policy interests and reflect the American people’s compassion and support of human dignity. The Payne Fellowship, which provides up to $93,000 in benefits over two years for graduate school, internships, and professional development activities, provides a unique pathway to the USAID Foreign Service.

The Payne Fellowship encourages the application of members of minority groups who have historically been underrepresented in international development careers and those with financial need. The fellowship is named in honor of longtime development champion, the late Congressman Donald Payne. The initiative is funded by USAID and administered by Howard University. Fellowship recipients can use the award to attend U.S. graduate programs throughout the country; they will join the USAID Foreign Service upon completion of the program, as long as they successfully complete the Payne Program and USAID entry requirements. Summer Enrichment Program Overview

The Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program is a six-week summer program designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. The Program usually selects participants (known as “Rangel Scholars”) each year from universities throughout the United States. Students live at Howard University, attend classes, and participate in a variety of programs with foreign affairs professionals at Howard and at diverse locations around Washington, DC.

The Program has two major components. First, in order to enhance participants’ academic preparation to work in international affairs, the Program provides two courses and a seminar that focus on enhancing knowledge and skills related to U.S. foreign policy, economics and writing. In addition, in order to provide greater insight into the foreign policy-making process and international affairs careers, the Rangel Program introduces the participants to a wide range of government and non-government professionals who work on global issues and also arranges visits to various institutions involved in international affairs. The Program also helps students explore graduate school, scholarship, fellowship, internship, and professional options in international affairs.

The Program covers the costs for tuition, travel, housing, and two meals per day. It also provides a stipend of $3,200.

Funding: Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program (TWC)

Pickering Fellowship Program provides graduate students with financial support, mentoring and professional development to prepare them academically and professionally for a career with the U.S. Department of State. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply.

Pickering Fellowship Program Benefits

  • Up to $37,500 annually for tuition, room and board, books, mandatory fees and some travel expenses for a two-year master’s degree in fields related to the Foreign Service such as business administration, economics, public policy, international affairs, and other relevant fields.

Foreign Affairs Information Technology (IT) Fellowship Program

What is the Foreign Affairs Information Technology (IT) Fellowship Program?

Funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Washington Center (TWC) for Internships and Academic Seminars, the Foreign Affairs IT Fellowship Program provides outstanding students pursuing an IT-related degree with a challenging and rewarding opportunity to apply technology solutions to the business of diplomacy.

The program awards five Fellows (three graduates and two undergraduates) with tuition assistance, mentorship, and professional development to launch their careers in the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Service. Women, members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and students with financial need are encouraged to apply. Fellows who successfully complete the program and the Foreign Affairs IT Specialist entry requirements will receive an appointment as a Foreign Service Information Management Specialist (IMS).

What is a Foreign Service Information Management Specialist (IMS)?

Foreign Service Information Management Specialists support and maintain hundreds of applications and provide IT services domestically and abroad at over 275 overseas posts in nearly 200 countries. Information Management Specialists serve their country by maintaining secure, reliable IT tools and resources to ensure that Foreign Service Officers, federal agencies and non-government partners can promote diplomacy while serving overseas. Information Management Specialists gain experiences that few other IT professions offer, including the reward of living in a foreign country while experiencing different cultures and helping to protect U.S. interests abroad.

We will very much appreciate your help in spreading the word about our PAID TEACHING INTERNSHIP starting on January 3rd, 2018, and finishing on July 1st, 2018. We would like to ask you to share this information with your students who are looking into internship opportunities in Russia for this time period. Please let them know that we have a vacancy for one of our best internships available in the city of Novosibirsk, the administrative capital of Siberia and the third largest city in Russia.

The internship comprises a paid teaching position at the English language courses that we run in Novosibirsk from mid-January to mid-June, and participating in our children’s language camps in January and in June as a volunteer teacher of English. We provide FREE accommodation in Novosibirsk and an opportunity to have Russian language lessons as well as work on a year-abroad project under the guidance of our professional teachers. Understanding Europe in an Age of Uncertainty

The objective of the academic course “Spring University Prague 2018: Understanding Europe in an Age of Uncertainty” is to provide students with a broad understanding of the most significant political and social issues in contemporary Europe.

Instead of relaxing at the “End of History” after the collapse of Eastern Bloc in 1989, Europe is facing new challenges at the beginning of the 21st century. These new challenges – including the economic and financial crisis, ageing population, complicated relations with Russia and Turkey, terrorist attacks connected with the activities of the Islamic State and most currently, the strong immigration flow – are raising concerns and leading to significant political radicalisation and social unrest. On the one hand, this challenging period raises feelings of uncertainty: Are we moving from solid to “liquid times”? What will “Europe” mean in the future? How does all this influence our everyday lives? On the other hand, this “Age of Uncertainty” is an ideal time to revise common approaches and look for new perspectives. We will, together, analyse and discuss the current development of Europe in an inspiring environment made up of students coming from countries all over the world.

The course provides an interdisciplinary approach and combines multiple learning methods, such as lectures, workshops, round-table discussions, field work, group-work and student presentations. Students will not only have the opportunity to explore a range of interesting topics and gain valuable insights into the current challenges and risks to the development of Europe, but will also have occasion to improve their research and presentation skills.

The Duke Slavic and Eurasian Language Resource Center will host a summer workshop from July 23 to July 25, 2018 on Language Pedagogy, Research & Proficiency Testing, and is pleased to invite applications from interested K-12 and university faculty, scholars, graduate students, and professionals to enroll in the workshop.

There is an additional session devoted exclusively to Russian language proficiency testing training and certification in CEFR proficiency testing from July 26-29, 2018.

Topics of presentations at previous workshops have included:
•       Neuroimaging and multilingualism
•       Teaching language and culture through film
•       Language proficiency testing
•       Specialized language instruction at the advanced and superior levels
•       The use of technology in the language classroom
•       Integrating heritage students in the language classroom
•       Addressing the needs of differently-abled students
•       Using computer technologies to create pedagogical materials
•       The role of grammar in proficiency-based instruction
•       Popular culture and language instruction
•       Web resources for language teachers

Funding: NEH Senior Research Fellowship Program (CAORC)

The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) is pleased to announce the National Endowment for the Humanities Senior Research Fellowship Program! This fellowship supports advanced research in the humanities for U.S. postdoctoral scholars, and foreign national postdoctoral scholars who have been residents in the US for three or more years.

Scholars must carry out research in a country which hosts a participating American overseas research center. Eligible countries for 2017-2018 are: Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Cyprus, Georgia, Indonesia, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Senegal, Sri Lanka or Tunisia. Fellowship stipends are $4,200 per month for a maximum of four months. This program is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) under the Fellowship Programs at Independent Research Institutions (FPIRI).
