NCEEER invites applications to its Title VIII National Research Competition (individual and collaborative grants) and its Title VIII Dissertation Completion Grant (ABD scholars). The deadline for both programs is December 31, 2021. Applicants must be US citizens and, in the case of the National Research Competition, be PhD holders by the time of the award.

Funding: At-Large Sumners Scholarship

Deadline: April 19, 2022

For more than six decades The Sumners Foundation has provided scholarships to outstanding students.  I hope you will share this information with your students about our At-Large Sumners Scholarships for rising juniors for their junior and senior years at a Texas or Oklahoma College or University.  Scholarships are $15,000/year for each of those last two years of undergraduate work ($30,000 total) to cover tuition, on-campus room and board, fees, and books.  Students must be U.S. citizens and permanent residents of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Arkansas, or Kansas.  Scholarships will be awarded in the spring of 2021 to be initially be applied in the fall of 2022, but applications are open now.

Funding: Title VIII Funding for Summer Language Training at ASU

The Department of State’s Title VIII program funds graduate students with U.S. citizenship to study the less commonly taught languages of Eastern Europe and the Former Soviet Union at ASU’s Critical Languages Institute. For summer 2022, CLI is looking forward to returning to in-person instruction on the ASU campus and at our overseas locations.

Acad. Job: Graduate Research Fellowships at the Center for Jewish History (New York, NY)

The application deadline for Graduate Research Fellowships starting in September 2022 is February 4, 2022.

The Center for Jewish History offers ten-month fellowships to doctoral candidates to support original research using the collections of the Center’s Partners – American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Preference is given to those candidates who draw on the archival and library resources of more than one Partner institution. Fellowships must run for 10 months, starting September 2022, and applicants should have completed all requirements (i.e., coursework, exams, dissertation proposal) for the doctoral degree except for the dissertation. Fellows are encouraged to spend two days per week in residence in the Lillian Goldman Reading Room using the archival and library resources, if possible; however, we also encourage applications from applicants who will operate on a hybrid model (e.g., spend two months at the Center and work remotely for the remainder of the fellowship period if the majority of collection material is already digitized). Fellows must also participate in the Center for Jewish History Fellowship Seminar Program, attend monthly meetings of the fellowship program cohort, deliver a minimum of one lecture based on research conducted at Center, and submit a report upon completion of the fellowship describing their experience as a Center fellow.

Funding: 2022-2023 Residence Grant at the Center for Urban History, Lviv, Ukraine

Center for Urban History invites you to apply for the 2022-2023 Residence Grant at the Center for Urban History.

The residence grants are offered to researchers of various fields in the humanities from different countries. We especially encourage historians, culture studies scholars, and anthropologists. We welcome applications for research that offer broad interpretations of urban history as a discipline at the intersection of various approaches of humanities and social sciences. The chronological and geographical frames of the proposed research are limited to the 19th and 20th-century history of East and Central Europe. Preference will be given to topics related to the Center’s research focuses like urbanization in multi-ethnic cities, individual experience of city residents during 20th-century radical changes and wars, planned cities, urban heritage, commemorative practices and city space, infrastructure and cultural practices in the cities, digital and public history.

Study Abroad: American Research Institute of the South Caucasus (ARISC)

The American Research Institute of the South Caucasus (ARISC) invites students and instructors at U.S. degree-granting programs to apply to the Experience the South Caucasus Fellowship Program, taking place June 20 – July 20, 2022 in the countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. The program will immerse Fellows in the vibrant cultures and deep histories of the South Caucasus. Experience the South Caucasus offers participants a unique opportunity to gain valuable skills, learn about a little studied, but geopolitically significant part of the world, and visit cultural heritage sites — all through an exciting, experiential learning program. Experience the South Caucasus Fellows will: Gain valuable, unique work experience through engaging international projects, including part-time to full-time internships at non-governmental organizations (NGOs), research institutions, and non-profit organizations. Fellows will be able to indicate their preference for country and project. Training and supervision will be provided by each local institution.Learn about local arts, culture, music, history, and more, through weekly lectures offered by community-based scholars.
Enhance global competence through immersive cultural experiential learning and field trips to cultural sites and museums.
Build communication and presentation skills in a final, two-day workshop in Tbilisi, Georgia, where fellows will share and reflect on their experiences. The workshop will be led by Dr. Elizabeth Fagan (Virginia Commonwealth University).

Funding: Language Teaching and Learning Research Grants (University of Pittsburgh)

Deadline: February 15, 2022

The Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) at the University of Pittsburgh will award up to two Language Teaching and Learning Research (LTLR) Grants for scholars to conduct research projects on-site or remotely at the Summer Language Institute in June – July 2022. Funded projects must focus on the teaching and learning of one or more of the following priority languages: Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Polish, Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian. Other languages that are taught at the SLI may be included in a project proposal in addition to these priority languages; see https://sli.pitt.edu for the complete list of language courses offered. 

Applicants may propose to be in residence in Pittsburgh for all or a portion of the two-month duration of the SLI, according to the needs of their projects. However, please note that applicants should be prepared to conduct their projects remotely in the event that pandemic conditions limit in-person instruction, and/or if University of Pittsburgh restrictions on non-essential travel prohibit the use of grant funds to cover travel expenses in Summer 2022.
