Funding: At-Large Sumners Scholarship

Deadline: April 19, 2022

For more than six decades The Sumners Foundation has provided scholarships to outstanding students.  I hope you will share this information with your students about our At-Large Sumners Scholarships for rising juniors for their junior and senior years at a Texas or Oklahoma College or University.  Scholarships are $15,000/year for each of those last two years of undergraduate work ($30,000 total) to cover tuition, on-campus room and board, fees, and books.  Students must be U.S. citizens and permanent residents of Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Arkansas, or Kansas.  Scholarships will be awarded in the spring of 2021 to be initially be applied in the fall of 2022, but applications are open now.

Now that you are halfway through the fall semester, I’m sure you have identified the really exceptional students in your classes.  Financial need is not a factor.  We are looking for students who in their vocation or avocation will help to further the democratic process – they might be pre-law majors, maybe they are pursuing an education degree because they want to teach government, maybe they are economics majors wanting to work in a think tank or maybe they are involved in the political process by helping run campaigns, serving on city committees, or just generally changing the world!   Sumners Scholars alumni are currently serving on the Texas Supreme Court, as founder and CEO of an oil and gas company, volunteering in the Peace Corps, serving as city managers, working for think tanks, coordinating political campaigns, and working in the Texas State Capital just to name a few.

The application for the At-Large Sumners Scholarship can be found on our website:  www.sumnersfoundation.org.  The pool of applications will be narrowed down and interviews will be conducted in May  of 2021.  The application deadline is April 19, 2022 at 5:00 PM.
