UCIS Postdoctoral Fellowships in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies

The University of Pittsburgh is offering two postdoctoral fellowships in the arts and humanities (1 position) and the social sciences (1 position) to begin in August 2024 for scholars whose work focuses on Eastern Europe and/or Eurasia. These fellowships are two-year appointments that are renewable for a third year. Fellows will be expected to pursue their own scholarly work and participate in the academic and intellectual activities of the University Center for International Studies (UCIS) and the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES), as well as the Department with which they become affiliated.

In the context of the current invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing tragic war, many analysts have claimed that we face the real end of (or the confirmation) of the Cold War and its dichotomies. What we witness would be the outright confrontation between civic liberalism and autocracy, or the “West” and the “East”. According to Stephen Kotkin, even if post-communist societies have changed, a military-police dictatorship in some former satellite countries is still fighting a “West” seen as enemy, and this has the reverse consolidating effect on the West which re-emerged and stood up against Putin.

Critical Languages Scholarship Program (US Department of State)

The application is now open for the U. S. Department of State’s 2024 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program and its virtual initiative, CLS Spark! We welcome your students to apply now to learn a critical language on a funded virtual or overseas summer program. The application is available at https://clscholarship.org/apply. The deadline for applications is 8:00 pm Eastern Standard Time on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.

The CLS Program provides intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. Depending on language and level, U.S. students can either apply for the overseas CLS Program or its virtual initiative, CLS Spark. The CLS Program offers in-person cohort-based programs at partner institutions abroad that provide instruction at various levels for U.S. graduate and undergraduate students in 13 critical languages: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu.

Learn Russian in Armenia, Scholarships available

10 scholarships are available through ASPIRANTUM’s Dostoyevsky scholarship scheme to those students who meet the eligibility criteria presented below and are interested to learn Russian in Armenia during the 4-8 weeks of Russian language winter school – https://aspirantum.com/courses/russian-language-winter-school 

The participation fee for the 4-8 weeks Russian Language course is $2500-$4920 ($4920 – 8 weeks, $4350 – 7 weeks, $3700 – 6 weeks, $3100 – 5 weeks, $2500 – 4 weeks). The Dostoyevsky scholarship will cover $500-$700, and the student, if awarded the scholarship, will have to pay $500-$700 less for the course.

Funding: International Vladimir Nabokov Society Research Grants

Nominations are now open for the 2024 BASEES Women’s Forum Prizes. Nominations for the book and article/chapter prizes should be submitted by 1st July 2023. Please do submit your eligible publications for consideration!

The Forum will offer three prize awards this coming year, for scholarly works of high quality either produced by a woman or which furthers knowledge about gender and diversity relevant to the East European, Russian and Eurasian region, in the following categories:

a) A singly or jointly authored book OR a singly or jointly authored edited collection.
b) A scholarly article or book chapter.
c) A postgraduate conference paper, to be given at the BASEES conference in 2024.

Funding: Dumbreck Doctoral Research Scholarship in Slavonic Studies

The School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC) is offering one Dumbreck Scholarship for doctoral study in any field of Slavonic Studies, tenable from October 2023.
