Funding: FY 2023 Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowships Program

The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) fellowship program provides opportunities for doctoral candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. The program is designed to deepen research knowledge and increase the study of modern foreign languages, cultural engagement, and area studies not generally included in U.S. curricula. 

Program features

Students may request funding to support overseas research for a period of no less than six months and no more than 12 months. Funds support travel expenses to and from the residence of the fellow and the country or countries of research; maintenance and dependent allowances based on the location of research for the fellow and his or her dependent(s); an allowance for research-related expenses overseas; and health and accident insurance premiums. Projects may focus on one or more of the following geographic areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding the United States and its territories).

Funding: Aleksanteri Institute Visiting Fellowship 2022-2023

Deadline: February 12, 2023

The Aleksanteri Institute, the Finnish Centre for Russian and Eastern European studies at the University of Helsinki, is pleased to invite applications for its Visiting Fellowships for the academic year 2023-2024 from scholars holding a PhD degree and pursuing research that relates to the Institute’s research profile.

The Fellowship carries a monthly grant to cover the expenses related to the research visit. Fellowships are for two months (with some exceptions specified in the call for proposals, for three months). The Visiting Fellowship scheme is intended for scholars who reside outside Finland.

The deadline for applications is 12 February 2023.

Update to the call, Monday 30 January:
For scholars affected by Russia’s invasion, who reside in Ukraine or who have had to leave Ukraine after 24 February 2022, there will be two three-month visiting fellowships with an additional accommodation costs subsidy (up to 1400 € monthly), supported by the University of Helsinki Ukraine Appeal.

Funding: National Institute of Justice Graduate Research Fellowship

Deadline: April 25, 2023

NIJ’s Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) program supports doctoral research with relevance to criminal or juvenile justice in the United States. This includes criminology, forensic science, technology for law enforcement, and more. Applications from all science and engineering fields are welcome.

The fellowship provides up to three years of support within a five-year period and includes:

  • $40,500/year student salary 
  • $12,000/year cost of education allowance
  • $3,000/year research expenses

We anticipate funding about 20 new fellows this year.

Funding: Temerty Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Holodomor Studies, 2023-2024

The Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies is pleased to announce the 2023-24 Temerty Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Holodomor Studies. Offered under the auspices of its Holodomor Education and Research Consortium (HREC) for the academic year of 2023–24, the fellowship supports the study of and expansion of knowledge about the Holodomor. Applications are welcome from scholars in disciplines including but not confined to history, political science, anthropology, sociology, and literature, as well as famine studies, genocide studies, and rural studies. Interdisciplinary and comparative projects will be considered.

Qualified applicants will have received a PhD (or Candidate of Sciences degree) within the past five years at the time of application. Applicants who are scheduled to receive their degree by the end of June 2023 are also eligible to apply, if they submit confirmatory documents. The successful applicant will be expected to take up the post-doctoral appointment at CIUS (University of Alberta) from 1 September 2023, and no later than 30 September 2023. In addition to working on a research project, the Temerty Fellow will assist and participate in the overall program planning and activities of HREC, including the organization of a workshop or conference in the area of her/his research.

Funding: AAUW Fellowships

Deadline: March 22, 2023

The AAUW Austin Branch is announcing its fellowship competition for 2023-2024.  The Austin Branch will award at least 2-3 fellowships in the amount of at least $2000 each.  This award is to assist women who require financial help to complete their doctoral program.  A prerequisite for consideration is formal candidacy for the doctoral degree with at least a 3.5 GPA.  Both US citizens and non-citizens are eligible.

Funding: Kennan Institute’s Title VIII Research Scholarship

Deadline: January 31, 2023

The deadline for the Kennan Institute’s Title VIII Research Scholarship is next Tuesday, January 31. The Kennan Institute is proud to host Title VIII Research Scholarships lasting three to nine months available to academic participants in the early stages of their career (before tenure) or scholars whose careers have been interrupted or delayed. 

For non-academics, an equivalent degree of professional achievement is expected. Eligibility is limited to the postdoctoral level for academic participants, although doctoral candidates in the process of completing a dissertation may apply (the dissertation must be successfully defended before taking residence at the Kennan Institute). Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Research proposals examining the countries of Eurasia are eligible. Those proposals related to regional Russia, Ukraine, Central Asia, Belarus, the Caucasus, and contemporary issues are particularly welcome. The Title VIII Research Scholar grant offers a stipend of $3,500 per month, research facilities, computer support, and some research assistance. Grant recipients are required to be in residence at the Institute in Washington, D.C. for the duration of their fellowship.

Funding: Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Research Fellowships

Established in 2015, the Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Research Fellowships provide a maximum stipend of $25,000 for doctoral students at US and Canadian universities, who are citizens or permanent residents of the US, to conduct dissertation research in Russian Studies. The program is open to students in any discipline whose dissertation topics are within 19th-early 21st century Russian historical studies.

As of 2022, ASEEES is offering a new Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Research Fellowship for Women’s and Gender Studies with the same provisions and eligibility as the other Dissertation Research Fellowships.

Eastablished in 2019, the Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Completion Fellowships provide a maximum stipend of $25,000 for doctoral students at US and Canadian universities, who are citizens or permanent residents of the US, to complete their dissertation. The program is open to students in any disciplinewhose dissertation topics are within 19th-early 21st century Russian historical studies.

Prof. Dev: 2023 ACTR Summer Russian Language Teacher Professional Development Program and Fellowship Opportunity

American Councils and ACTR are pleased to announce the 2023 Summer Russian Language Teacher Professional Development Program and Fellowship Opportunity at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) in Almaty, Kazakhstan. We kindly ask your assistance in drawing this opportunity to the attention of potentially interested colleagues.    

Fifteen (15) U. S. teachers will be accepted and funded for participation in the 2023 program, which will consist of small group work, individual tutorials, and seminars based on a curriculum which emphasizes four-skill communication in contemporary Russian, clarity and confidence of teacher self-expression, advanced grammar in context, and an expanded understanding of the diverse peoples and cultures that make up the Russian-speaking world today. 

The ACTR Board has recommended a priority in 2023 for in-service K-12 teachers and university-level instructors or teaching fellows holding a teaching appointment for AY 2023-24. Applications from teachers serving historically under-represented US populations are particularly encouraged.
