The Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES) at The Ohio State University is now accepting applications for its MA in Slavic and East European Studies for autumn 2021. The application deadline for international students is November 30, 2020 and for domestic students, December 15, 2020. The GRE is not required.

The MA in Slavic and East European Studies is an interdisciplinary, terminal degree that prepares students for careers in the government, non-profit, or public sector, or to pursue a PhD. For those interested in a career in the public, military, or private sector, the CSEES MA provides them with the language skills and regional knowledge to understand and analyze the events, culture, history, and politics of a region or country within Eastern Europe/Eurasia. Those wanting to go on to pursue a PhD receive a foundation in the humanities and social sciences while developing a focused approach to the study of the countries of Eastern Europe and Eurasia. All students choose a topical and/or regional specialization, allowing students to customize the degree to their interests. To complete the degree, students may choose to either complete an MA exam or defend a thesis.

The University of Michigan welcomes applications for our MIRS: REEE Studies Specialization.

The Masters in International and Regional Studies (MIRS) Russian, East European, and Eurasian studies specialization is designed for students with an interest in engaging in interdisciplinary research and training on Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. Students choose to focus their studies on humanities, social sciences, and professional coursework related to Russia, Eastern Europe, and/or Eurasia.

Anchored in the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (CREES), which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, the MIRS REEES specialization draws upon CREES’s depth of scholarship and research. CREES has over 50 affiliated faculty members from all across the University of Michigan, including from 17 departments in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and from 9 professional schools, including: Architecture and Urban Planning; Art and Design; Business; Environment and Sustainability; Law; Medicine; Music, Theatre & Dance; Public Health; and Public Policy. CREES affiliated faculty are area specialists and visiting scholars who offer more than 150 courses each year on the business, cultures, demography, economics, history, languages, law, literatures, politics, public policy, and social organization of the region.

The M.S. in Global Media and Cultures, a joint degree by the School of Modern Languages and School of Literature, Media, and Communication, is currently offered with tracks in Russian, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

The Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies is a two-year multidisciplinary program that offers advanced training for those qualified students who seek an integrated knowledge of the language, history, society and culture of the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe and Eurasia. This graduate degree offers the opportunity to create an individually tailored program. Upon graduation, students will have an extensive understanding of the country or countries of specialization, including a working knowledge of one of the region’s languages. The program primarily serves students preparing for professional careers and those seeking an M.A. before pursuing a professional career trajectory or Ph.D. in a particular discipline.

This region of the world covers over one-sixth of the globe and comprises countries, which differ enormously in language, ethnicity, religion, culture, political history and economic development. Since the mid-1980s, the process of reform, collapse and reconstruction in the region has led to a heightened interest in the area and the need for serious and scholarly understanding of the region. It is the mission of the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies to facilitate such understanding.

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for the M.A. in Russian Studies by January 15 for admission in fall 2021 (https://www.colorado.edu/gsll/graduate).

Applicants to the program may also apply for a TAship; TAs receive a modest salary and do not pay tuition. Late applications may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Virginia welcomes applications for three graduate programs, the MA in Contemporary Russian Studies, the MA in Slavic Languages and Literatures, and the PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures. The MA in Contemporary Russian Studies offers courses in Russian literature, language, culture, history, politics, art history, religious studies, and sociology, as well as further study in advanced Russian language. The MA and PhD programs in Slavic Languages and Literatures train graduate students primarily in Russian literature, culture, and help students to advance their language skills toward professional-level proficiency. At the PhD level students take secondary offerings in Polish language and Polish, Czech, and Central European literature and film. Other Slavic languages are offered through summer study. Students may also take courses in related areas in other language departments, English, History, Politics, Sociology, and Religious Studies, among many others.
