The American English Program has been helping Vladimir residents to learn English since 1992 and currently has more than 600 students each semester who are taught by a group of American and Russian teachers. 

PROGRAM BENEFITS: monthly stipend, room and board, three hours per week of one-to-one Russian lessons with faculty trained to teach Russian as a foreign language, thorough teacher orientation and ongoing teaching support from 2 full-time teacher trainers, textbooks customized specifically for our program, a pleasant and well-equipped teaching environment, full Russian visa application support, complete on-site administrative support from an excellent Russian staff, and much more.

Critical Languages Scholarship

Deadline: November 6, 2021

The application for the 2022 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is now open! We welcome your students to apply now to study Russian, Persian, Turkish, or Azerbaijani next summer on a fully-funded study abroad program.

The application is now live and available online at:  https://www.clscholarship.org/apply

The CLS Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains. Most languages offered by the CLS Program (9 of 15) do not require applicants to have any experience studying critical languages.

Resource: Etazhi Textbook

Georgetown University Press is delighted to announce the publication of Etazhi. This book, coauthored by Evgeny Dengub and Susanna Nazarova, uses the communicative approach to advance student’s Russian proficiency from the Novice High / Intermediate Low level of the ACTFL scale to an Intermediate Mid / Intermediate High level. Designed for one academic year of instruction, Etazhi engages students with highly relevant topics to internalize new vocabulary, expand their grammatical reach, and deepen their cultural understanding of Russian speakers. American Councils for International Education is currently accepting applications for the next cycle of U.S. Department of State Title VIII Research Fellowships in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. Fellowships are offered in two categories: 

Title VIII Research Scholar Program: 

Provides full support for research in policy-relevant fields in Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe. Fellowships include round-trip international travel; housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health, accident, and evacuation insurance; archive access; and logistical support. Open to U.S. graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, and faculty.

SRAS Explorer App

The SRAS Explorer App is aimed at guiding students and visitors in fun and purposeful exploration of our region. Its versatility will allow us to further enhance individual and faculty-led programs by creating connections and encouraging student participation.  While we hope you’ll be able to use it abroad, until then, explore with us virtually!

Join us September 21-25 for a virtual quest – we’ll be giving away more than $10,000 in study abroad scholarships, conversation practice, SRAS gear, and more. Our questions will challenge you to explore some of our study abroad locations and learn more about our region by hunting for answers on our app and the SRAS Family of Sites. You will also have a chance to get creative and share with us your knowledge and passion for the region.

Online Ukrainian Course (University of Kansas)

The University of Kansas is offering first-year Ukrainian ONLINE in Fall 2021. UKRA 104: Elementary Ukrainian I is open to both KU and non-KU learners, for college credit (5 credits).  

UKRA 104 is mostly asynchronous: students work with materials in Canvas Monday through Thursday at their own pace and meet each Friday as a class for a one-hour session via Zoom. 

Among other materials, UKRA 104 uses the open-education web-based resource for learning basic Ukrainian grammar, Dobra Forma (https://dobraforma.ku.edu/), developed by the course’s instructor, Dr. Oleksandra Wallo.  

The course begins on August 23 and ends on December 17, 2021. Please email Dr. Wallo (owallo@ku.edu) with questions on how to enroll, the cost, or the course itself.

Online Hungarian, Polish, and Turkish Language Programs (University of Florida)

The University of Florida Center for European Studies (CES) is happy to announce the launch of three online language programs. CES is a US Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center and a Foreign Language and Area Studies provider. As part of our NRC grant, the Center developed online language courses for Hungarian, Polish, and Turkish. We are currently offering the beginning level language sequence online with plans to add intermediate language classes in the future. 

Attached below is a brochure with additional information on less commonly taught languages (LCTLs) and how to apply. 

The Center offers two methods for non-UF students to enroll in the online language courses:

  1. UF College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Shared Language Program (for students enrolled in a state of Florida public university)
  1. CES Special Program for Online Language (for anyone outside the FL state university system)

Language Training Resource: Russian Textbook Online Companion

The authors of Panorama (of which I am one) and Rodnaya Rech’ are delighted to inform you that the online companion website (what we used to call the electronic workbook) for our respective textbooks will soon be online (Rodnaya Rech) better than before (Panorama) for the fall 2021 semester! (Panorama’s online companion website is already up, Rodnaya Rech’s website will be up by August 1.)

Panorama is an intermediate-level textbook for learners of Russian as a foreign language, while Rodnaya Rech’ is a textbook for heritage learners.

The online websites provide lots of exercises that are self-correcting AND you can link them to your class so that your students homework grades are accessible to you by a click of a link. And yes, the online website does work with Blackboard, Canvas, and other Learning Management Systems.
