Lang. Training/Study Abroad/Funding: Turkish Flagship Language Initiative (Wisconsin/Azerbaijan)

February 5, 2020 (undergraduate)

In 2020, Boren Scholarship and Fellowship applicants have the opportunity to study Turkish as part in the Turkish Flagship Language Initiative (TURFLI). Boren Scholars and Fellows selected for this initiative will receive funding for intensive language study and cultural immersion, beginning with a summer 2020 domestic program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, followed by an overseas program in Baku, Azerbaijan.   • Summer Program: The summer domestic programs will be at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, through the Arabic, Persian & Turkish Language Institute. APTLI begins on June 15 – August 7, 2020. Please see the program website for more information for students: https://aptli.wisc.edu
  • Overseas Program: The fall overseas programs will take place at the Azerbaijan University of Languages (AUL) centers in Baku, Azerbaijan. Dates for the overseas programs are yet to be confirmed. This program will be administered by American Councils and UW-Madison jointly. Students will be considered UW-Madison students for the duration of the overseas programs.
  • Language Level: The TURFLI program is appropriate for applicants with no language proficiency, as well as those with intermediate or advanced proficiency in Turkish.
  • Application: The applications for the 2020 Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are now available at www.borenawards.org. 
  • Undergraduate deadline: February 5, 2020
  • Graduate deadline is: January 29, 2020

The Boren Awards, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they can add important international and language components to their educations.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships Program for US students

The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships program provides allocations of academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education or consortia of institutions of higher education to assist meritorious undergraduate students and graduate students undergoing training in modern foreign languages and related area or international studies. Eligible students apply for fellowships directly to an institution that has received an allocation of fellowships from the U.S. Department of Education.

Melik-Bakhshyan Scholarships to Learn Armenian in Yerevan

Up to 3 Melik-Bakhshyan scholarships are available for eligible applicants to learn Armenian in Yerevan.

Lang. Training: Intensive Russian, BCS, Ukrainian, Latvian, and more. (Indiana University Language Workshop) Online and Study Abroad options

Deadline: January 31, 2020

The 2020 Indiana University Language Workshop is accepting applications for intensive study of Russian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), Ukrainian,
Hungarian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Kyrgyz, Mongolian, Turkmen, Uzbek, and 13 other languages.

Fellowships and scholarships are available for graduate students, undergraduate students, and lifelong learners.
All participants pay in-state tuition. Graduate credit is available for most courses.

Lang. Training/Resource: Reality Czech Online Textbook and Curriculum (UT Austin)

Reality Czech is a next generation openly licensed Czech textbook and curriculum currently under development by Dr. Christian Hilchey from the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies in collaboration with the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning (COERLL) at the University of Texas at Austin.

All materials will be freely available online under a Creative Commons license to any university or individuals who wish to use or adapt them.

This instagram posts weekly challenges of Russian grammar/vocabulary with free exercises supported with Russian/Soviet art visuals. They also post Instagram stories with fun Russian grammar in a trivia quiz style.  For lower levels of Russian (mostly first and second years).

Lang. Training: Summer Programs in Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, Uzbek (University of Wisconsin)

The Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is now accepting applications! We offer courses in intensive elementary and intermediate Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek. Additional levels and languages (such as Kyrgyz) may be added with sufficient student interest.

Graduate students, researchers, and professionals who are US citizens are especially encouraged to apply for the Title VIII fellowship, which covers full tuition plus a stipend of $2,500 for the summer. FLAS fellowships are also available for eligible undergraduate and graduate students, and all applicants (including international students) are eligible for the Wisconsin Intensive Summer Language Institutes (WISLI) tuition scholarship or for tuition remission scholarships.

Lang. Training: Translation and Interpreting Courses (UMass Amherst)

University of Massachusetts at Amherst has a line-up of online translation and interpreting courses in spring 2020, with well-known and experienced faculty members. Students can complete a 15-credit Certificate in Professional Translation and Interpreting in one year or take as long as they want based on their individual needs. Courses can also be taken independent of the certificate to meet students’ needs for continuing education.  

When filling out the application form, students are required to demonstrate high proficiency in English and at least one LOTE (Language Other than English), via proficiency exams, university-level coursework in the language, and living/work experience in country where LOTE is spoken.

Lang. Training: Czech Online (University of Kansas)

I am thrilled to say that the University of Kansas offers two years of beginning and intermediate Czech online in 2019-2020. Starting in January 2020, the second semester of introductory Czech (CZCH 108) is open to students with previous instruction or heritage knowledge of Czech, at the equivalent of either one or two semesters.  Intermediate Czech (CZCH 208) accepts students with previous instruction of Czech for three or more semesters. The classes are taught by Dr. Mila Saskova-Pierce and meet twice a week for synchronous instruction using ZOOM platform. Free textbook, texts and other pedagogical materials are available in Blackboard or word format. ​

The courses follow the ACTFL format, the five Cs, as well as the Common European Framework of Languages (CEFR), which is the European Proficiency Assessment.  

The classes accept university students as well as independent learners.  At the end of the four semesters students should be able to perform on the ACTFL intermediate level of speaking and writing proficiency as well as of reading and listening comprehension.
