Study Abroad: Summer Intensive Russian and Kazakh and Elective Courses in Eurasian Studies (Astana, Kazakhstan)

Nazarbayev University (Astana, Kazakhstan), in collaboration with the University of Arizona, is pleased to announce the Second Summer School in Russian and Eurasian Studies (SSRES). We are now accepting applications from undergraduate and graduate students, as well as working professionals for our 2017 summer session. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2017. Program dates for SSRES 2017: May 26-July 22 (8 weeks)

The main component of SSRES in 2017 will be an Intensive 8-week Course in Russian Language (all levels are welcome) OR an Intensive 8-week Course in Beginner’s Kazakh Language. The program offers 120 contact hours of in-class instruction in all aspects of these languages and one elective course in the Eurasian Studies curriculum taught in English. Students can choose one from the following elective courses:

  • HST 100 History of Kazakhstan (6 ECTS or 3 Carnegie)
  • HST 104 Central Asian History II (6 ECTS or 3 Carnegie)
  • WLL 230 Survey of Post-Soviet Russian Literature and Culture (6 ECTS or 3 Carnegie)

In additional to the core program, the students will have an opportunity to learn some elementary Kazakh and get an introduction to Kazakh culture by taking a weekly non-credited practical course in Kazakh Language and Culture (once a week on Fridays, free and included in the program). Students, enrolled in Kazakh, will be able to take a similar course in Russian Language and Culture.

American students have an option to apply to the program through The University of Arizona Global Initiatives and earn US-based academic credits. Study Abroad: Summer University Programs (NRUHSE)

The Summer University at the HSE is a new initiative designed to provide students, PhD candidates, postdocs and professionals from around the world with unique opportunities to enhance their knowledge in area studies and beyond. Offering a broad interdisciplinary selection of courses, the Summer University is open to all students and will be of particular interest to those who study International Relations, History, Political Science and other social sciences and humanities. Many of the courses, taught in English, focus on the politics, history, economics and culture of Russia and Eurasia.

Tuition and Fees

Programme fee:

  • $150 USD per credit
  • $177 USD per credit (if participant takes less than 3 ECTS credits total)
  • Online processing fee: 3000 RUB (non-refundable; registration fee will be waived for HSE students)

Programme fee covers:
– tuition,
– accommodation support*,
– visa support,
– at least one sight-seeing tour and social events.

*Accommodation support involves help with booking a place in one of HSE dormitories. The cost of accommodation (5 400 RUB/month) is not included in the programme fee.

Language Training: Summer Study Abroad Programs (Poland)

This is to let you know that the 2017 Summer Study Abroad programs and application forms have posted to the Foundation’s web-site.  All programs and sessions are now open and we invite you to apply!

It’s going to be an exciting summer!  There are 3-, 4-, and 6 week programs at the Jagiellonian University (JU) and 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, 7-, and 8-week programs at the John Paul II Catholic University in Lublin aka KUL.

Apply either as a paying student or for a KF scholarship.  All paying students who will be 18 years old and will have a high school diploma by the first day of the program will be accepted.

Not all students who apply for a scholarship will receive funding, but we’ll save a seat for you in the program in case you intend to go whether you receive funding or not.

An important note: There is a limited amount of space in Session A which spends 3 weeks in Krakow and 1 week in the resort town of Szczawnica.  To guarantee your space in the program, apply by March 20th! Payment is required when you apply.

We’re accepting applications and payment for all other programs through May 18th.  All students who are eligible are accepted. 

Students who are applying for a KF scholarship must apply by April 17th See details posted under the heading Tomaszkiewicz-Florio Scholarships, Frances E. Wyszynski Scholarship and Wisconsin Study in Poland Scholarship.  Details vary so read carefully! We’re reserving a number of spaces in Session A for any scholarship applicant who applies for Session A so that scholarship applicants need not worry about the March 20th deadline for Session A.  Scholarship decisions will be announced in May.

Language Training: Russian Language Summer Schools (Omsk State University)

With a mission to deliver a learning experience that is exciting and engaging, Dostoevsky OmSU offers 2 summer courses with fixed start dates in July and August for international students who are interested in learning Russian language and would like to delve into Russian traditional culture.

Russian Language Summer School in July (Intensive General Russian) is a 3-week intensive program that aims to provide students with the opportunity to practice all main skills in Russian, reinforce and enrich their knowledge of Russian and includes 102 academic hours of tuition.

Course Fees: 45 000 RUB (approx. 700 €/750 USD)

Upon the completion of the program, students will get the Russian Language School Certificate (6-7 ETCS).

Russian Language Summer School in August is a 2-week program that covers a balance of language skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), grammar at an appropriate level from beginner to advanced and includes 72 academic hours of tuition.

Course Fees: 30 000 RUB (approx. 470 €/500 USD)

Upon the completion of the program, students will get the Russian Language School Certificate (3 ETCS).

Russian Language classes are taught by experienced language teaching professionals (teachers of Russian as a Foreign Language) and follow a communicative approach to language teaching. In addition to in-class Russian language instruction, students will attend lectures of cultural and academic interest.

The social and cultural programs of Summer Schools are designed to help participants gain a valuable overview of Russian culture based on local heritage. We want to show participants the wide diversity of Russian culture, which is why we have built a great program for participants to keep them learning, exploring Omsk and experiencing new things.
