A grant to study full-time or conduct research by Americans studying at universities in Poland or American researchers who conduct undergraduate, graduate or postdoctoral research at leading Polish universities and research institutions. This grant includes an allowance for housing and living expenses in Poland. There are no restrictions to fields of studies and research. Application deadline is March 21st, 2023

Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia (Armenia and Georgia)

The Monterey Initiative in Russian Studies (MIRS) at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey invites applications for the Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia 2023.
It is our pleasure to announce the upcoming Monterey Summer Symposium on Russia 2023. It will be held in Armenia and Georgia, running from July 2 to July 17, 2023. Armenia and Georgia are two very different countries, differently positioned geopolitically, though with shared history in the Soviet Union and Russian Empire. They stand at a proverbial crossroads of international affairs. China’s Belt and Road Initiative runs through the South Caucasus, which are crucial to global energy supplies. On energy and regional security, the United States plays an important role, while Turkey and Iran are neighboring countries, connected to Armenia and Georgia through bonds of tension and affiliation. Armenia and Georgia have been profoundly affected by Russia’s war in Ukraine, which has added degrees of uncertainty to a region long familiar with uncertainty.

Summer Intensive Program in Russian & Eurasian Studies (Astana, Kazakhstan)

The University of Arizona, in collaboration with Eurasian National University (ENU), is now accepting applications for the 2023 Summer Intensive Program in Russian and Eurasian Studies in Astana, Kazakhstan. We particularly welcome undergraduate as well as graduate students whose research focuses on Central Asia and students interested in learning multiple foreign languages. We accept all types of funding. The Arizona-in-Kazakhstan Program is fully FLAS compliant.

Lang. Training: Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI) 2023

Greetings from the Central Eurasian Studies Summer Institute (CESSI)! We are excited to announce that applications for CESSI 2023 are now open!  CESSI typically offers courses in Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, and Uzbek.  Additional Central Eurasian languages (such as Azerbaijani or Kyrgyz) may be added with sufficient student interest.  

Several funding opportunities exist for students of any type. Graduate students (including incoming students), post-baccalaureate researchers, and professionals who are U.S. citizens are especially encouraged to apply for the Title VIII Fellowship*, which covers full tuition plus a stipend of $2,500 for the summer.  Note: this is a great opportunity for your incoming MA and PhD students to develop language skills before embarking on fieldwork.  

About the program:  

CESSI is an intensive, eight-week language program held each summer in Madison, Wisconsin.  This year the program will run from June 19 – August 11, 2023. Students receive the equivalent of one year of language study during this time and earn eight credits upon completion of the program.  In addition to language classes, CESSI students have the opportunity to attend lectures on Central Eurasia; participate in cultural events; engage with local Central Eurasian communities; and network with other scholars of Central Eurasia.  Students of all disciplines and academic programs are welcome!

Department of State Internship Opportunities and Events

Internship opportunities

  • The U.S. Department of State’s paid Student Internship Program Summer 2023 is accepting applications through November 7 at 11:59 PM.  College juniors, seniors, or graduate students with at least 60 credit hours earned by the time the internship begins and with a cumulative 3.2 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale are encouraged to apply for this opportunity.  Note: Applicants are considered a college junior if they will be starting the junior year of college immediately following the completion of the internship.  See USAjobs.gov to apply.
  • The Critical Language Scholarship for 2023 is accepting applications through November 15 at 8 PM ET.  Each summer, American undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities across the country spend eight to ten weeks learning one of fourteen languages at an intensive study abroad institute in languages including Russian, Chinese, and Korean.  An informational webinar takes place November 8 at 1 PM ET.
  • The Rangel Summer Enrichment Program for 2023 is accepting applications through February 15, 2023.  This six-week  program is designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need.  Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students, with at least sophomore status on the date of the application deadline and must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.  Interested students can join an information session on the Summer Enrichment Program on November 3 at 5 PM ET.

Lang. Training: STARTALK Institute on Proficiency-Based Pedagogy for Russian (Middlebury College)

We invite everyone interested to apply for the 2023-24 Startalk Institute on Proficiency-Based Pedagogy for Russian based at the Middlebury College School of Russian. This year-long cost-free program offers intensive training in proficiency-oriented teaching of adult learners (high school and post-secondary) that is grounded in second language acquisition theory and evidence-based teaching practices. The program comprises three modules totaling 128 instructional hours: 

  • Pre-immersion online session: Exploration of foundational principles of proficiency-based pedagogy

May 15, 2023 – June 30, 2023 (two 90-minute sessions per week)

  • Residential session on Middlebury campus: Practical applications of these principles in the full language immersion environment of the School of Russian

July 18 – August 2, 2023 

  • Post-immersion online session: Knowledge and skill enhancement in a community of practice

September 30, 2023 – May 15, 2024 (one 90-minute session per month)

Russian Language & Area Studies Program in Armenia (American Councils)

American Councils for International Education is pleased to announce that its Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP) will be offered for semester as well as summer study in Yerevan, Armenia beginning in spring 2023. For more than 40 years, American Councils programs have provided U.S. students of Russian unique opportunities to engage with the Russian speaking world through intensive study and cultural immersion designed to produce measurable gains in language proficiency and cultural understanding.  

Hosted by the Faculty of Russian Philology at Yerevan State University, the program provides 20 hours per week of intensive in-class Russian language instruction, housing with Russian speaking host families, weekly meetings and activities with conversation partners, weekly cultural activities, extended group travel to explore Armenia, and a rich array of opportunities to engage with the host country culture through university extracurricular activities, internships, and community service. A fully trained U.S. Resident Director provides ongoing logistical support and assistance, including 24-hour emergency aid, to participants throughout the program. The American Councils office in Yerevan is also available to assist and support program participants throughout their time in-country. The program is open to both graduate and undergraduate students who have completed at least one year of Russian language study.

Online Bosnian / Croatian / Montenegrin / Serbian Language Courses Open to All (UT Austin)

These courses prepares you for real-life situational discourse (appropriate for beginner-level students) in which you might find yourself when interacting with the target culture. 

Course assignments will allow you to work independently, but you can also expect to work with peers on various activities, such as project assignments, or video recording conversations in BCMS. We will have our class twice a week each time for an hour. On other days, you will work on your own.

Online Czech Language Course Open to All (UT Austin)

First Day of Class: August 22, 2022

CZ 506 First-Year Czech I MTWTH 10:00AM – 11:00AM

The Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies at UT Austin will be offering 1st-year Czech online in Fall 2022. This 5-credit introduction to Czech is open to all (not just UT students) for college credit. Utilizing Dr. Hilchey’s free, online textbook, Reality Czech, this course is completely online and features easy-to-follow lesson formats and activities. Modules follow a sequence of pre-class, in-class, and post-class activities ideal for a flipped classroom. 

This course is 100% online and includes live streaming video. Real-time participation is required during scheduled meeting times.
