Summer Research Laboratory (University of Illinois)

The Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center and the Slavic Reference Service at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are pleased to announce a call for applications to the 50th annual Summer Research Laboratory (SRL). The program will take place June 12 – August 4, 2023. Funded in part by the U.S. Department of State’s Title VIII Program, the SRL program provides research support for graduate and post-graduate level research on Central and East Europe and the Independent States of the former Soviet Union.

We will provide support for both in-person and virtual associateships for scholars to conduct summer research concerning all aspects of Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. Please note that the majority of Associateships will be in-person.

IRES Visiting Researcher Program (Uppsala University)

Deadline: November 30, 2022

The Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies (IRES) at Uppsala University announces the call for applications for the IRES Visiting Researcher Program 2023. The program offers a one-month research fellowship at IRES, including travel, accommodation and a stipend of 20 000 SEK. Full access to IRES premises and Uppsala University library resources is provided throughout the research period. The current round of applications offers six individual fellowships. The research visit of one month must be between 15 January to 25 June or 15 August to 31 December 2023.

Winter school on oral history and memory of the war in Ukraine from the University of Insubria and University of New Europe (extended deadline)

Earlier this year, we shared with you the call for participation in the winter school on oral history and memory research and their uses for studying the ongoing Russian invasion in Ukraine. The school will take place in Como (Italy) on January 23-27 2023 and is the result of cooperation between the University of Insubria (https://www.uninsubria.eu/) and the University of New Europe (https://neweurope.university/). On several requests, we extended the deadline for the applications until November 15, so this is the final call for the interested applicants. Department of State Internship Opportunities and Events

Internship opportunities

  • The U.S. Department of State’s paid Student Internship Program Summer 2023 is accepting applications through November 7 at 11:59 PM.  College juniors, seniors, or graduate students with at least 60 credit hours earned by the time the internship begins and with a cumulative 3.2 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale are encouraged to apply for this opportunity.  Note: Applicants are considered a college junior if they will be starting the junior year of college immediately following the completion of the internship.  See USAjobs.gov to apply.
  • The Critical Language Scholarship for 2023 is accepting applications through November 15 at 8 PM ET.  Each summer, American undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities across the country spend eight to ten weeks learning one of fourteen languages at an intensive study abroad institute in languages including Russian, Chinese, and Korean.  An informational webinar takes place November 8 at 1 PM ET.
  • The Rangel Summer Enrichment Program for 2023 is accepting applications through February 15, 2023.  This six-week  program is designed to provide undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers. This program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, women, and those with financial need.  Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students, with at least sophomore status on the date of the application deadline and must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.  Interested students can join an information session on the Summer Enrichment Program on November 3 at 5 PM ET.

Prof Dev: AATSEEL’s Certificate Program in Diverse and Inclusive Pedagogies (CDIPS)

Just a reminder that AATSEEL’s Certificate Program in Diverse and Inclusive Pedagogies (CDIPS) is now accepting applications for our second cohort. We invite applications from all professionals in the field of Slavic studies. 

Applications are due October 15, 2022. 

The CDIPS program supplies professionals in the field of Slavic languages and literatures with knowledge and training to address issues of diversity, inclusivity, equality, and justice in our teaching practice. We seek to support teachers, foster community, attract a broader range of students to the study of Russian/Slavic languages and literatures, and better support our learners of all cultural, linguistic, and gender identities and sexual orientations. The program includes a series of online sessions and culminates in a final project designing or revamping a course or unit using DEIAJ strategies and principles.

This grant is for those scholars whose research in the social sciences or humanities focuses on Russia, Ukraine, and the countries of Eurasia, and who demonstrate a particular need to utilize the library, archival, and other specialized resources of the Washington, D.C. area. Policy-relevant research is preferred. Applicants are required to hold an MA degree or higher, or demonstrate commensurate professional achievement. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
