Funding: Dissertation Research Fellowship (ASEEES)

The Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies invites applications for the Stephen F. Cohen-Robert C. Tucker Dissertation Research Fellowship (CTDRF) Program.

For the 2018-2019 academic year, the Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Research Fellowship (CTDRF) Program will provide up to six annual fellowships, with a maximum stipend of $22,000, to doctoral students at US universities, who are citizens or permanent residents of the US, to conduct dissertation research in Russia. The Program is open to students in any discipline whose dissertation topics are within 19th – early 21st century Russian historical studies.

Funding: Critical Language Scholarship (DoS)

Only about three weeks remain in the open application period for the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program. We invite American students to apply to learn a critical foreign language next summer on a fully-funded study abroad program.

The CLS Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 14 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

CLS, a program of the U.S. Department of State, is part of a wider government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity. CLS plays an important role in preparing students for the 21st century’s globalized workforce and increasing national competitiveness.

Academic Job: Sr. Research Fellowship Program (CAORC)

The Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) is pleased to announce the National Endowment for the Humanities Senior Research Fellowship Program! This fellowship supports advanced research in the humanities for U.S. postdoctoral scholars, and foreign national postdoctoral scholars who have been residents in the US for three or more years.

Scholars must carry out research in a country which hosts a participating American overseas research center. Eligible countries for 2017-2018 are: Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Cyprus, Georgia, Indonesia, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Senegal, Sri Lanka or Tunisia. Fellowship stipends are $4,200 per month for a maximum of four months. This program is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) under the Fellowship Programs at Independent Research Institutions (FPIRI).

Applications will be available on September 1, 2017 with a deadline of midnight on January 31, 2018.

Study Abroad: Maymester in Poland (UT-Austin)

The Center for Russian Eastern, European, and Eurasian Studies (CREEES) in cooperation with Collegium Civitas in Warsaw, Poland, is offering a three-credit lecture/discussion program with four potential field study components in-country. This program will include a Spring 2018 course component at The University of Texas at Austin and a field study component in Poland during May–June through a 2018 Maymester. Click here for more on SRAS in Warsaw.

In this program, students will be introduced to a general overview of social justice and security policy studies at UT, after which they will have an opportunity to delve in-depth into one of four topics in Poland, working closely with experts in one of the following fields:

(a) Identity, Diversity and Tolerance in Polish Society;
(b) Security Policy in Central Europe and Poland;
(c) Cyber-security Issues and Policy in Poland; and
(d) The Criminal Justice System in Poland.

As the topics are clearly linked to potential professional trajectories, students will have the option (for an additional fee) to further their professional interests by being placed in on-site internships in the field they are specializing in during the Maymester. Internships would take place after the program and would be eligible for additional UT credit through an affiliation agreement with the host institution, Collegium Civitas in Warsaw.

Study Abroad: Learn Russian in the EU (Daugavplis U.)

Daugavpils University and the “Learn Russian in the European Union” project are accepting applications for customized academic semester abroad programs specifically designed for international students, hosted at Daugavpils University, Latvia:
– Russian Language, Literature and Culture;
– Russian Language and East European Studies;
– Russian Language and Political Science;
– Russian Language and Natural Sciences (mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, and environmental studies), theory and laboratory practice (in English/Russian).

The application deadline for the Spring’2018 programs is December 1, 2017.

No visa is required to study in Latvia for citizens of the USA, Canada, the European Union, and many other countries.

Daugavpils University awards up to 30 ECTS credits – the equivalent of 15 US university credits.

Language Training: Russian Heritage Speakers Program (American Councils)

The Russian Heritage Speakers Program is intended to address the specific needs of students who speak Russian at home or with relatives, or who grew up speaking Russian and wish to strengthen their Russian skills. Program participants work with American Councils staff and host university faculty to develop an individualized program serving their unique needs as language learners. All programs focus on the development of Russian language skills, including grammar, conversation, and phonetics. Participants receive a minimum of twelve hours per week of in-class contact hours. Program features include homestays, weekly excursions, travel to other regions of Russia, conversation partners, and a wide range of opportunities to pursue hobbies and personal interests in a Russian context. Balkan Language Initiative (BLI)

The American Councils Balkan Language Initiative provides graduate students, advanced undergraduates, working professionals, and scholars intensive individualized instruction in the languages of the Balkans. Participants may choose to study one of 5 regional languages including: Albanian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Serbian. (Language prerequisite: two semesters of the target language or a related language)
