Graduate and Undergraduate Essay Contest on Dostoevsky-Related Topics

We are excited to announce that the Readers’ Advisory Board of the North American Dostoevsky Society is running another student essay contest! This year, we are looking for outstanding undergraduate- and graduate-student essays on Dostoevsky-related topics. Nominate your best students… or nominate yourself! Undergraduate CFP

The North American Dostoevsky Society (NADS) invites IDS/NADS members in good standing to nominate outstanding student essays on Dostoevsky-related topics. (If you are not a member of IDS or NADS, you can join at https://dostoevsky.org/). Students are welcome to nominate their own work, in which case IDS/NADS membership is not required. The topic is open; however, Dostoevsky and his works should be the main focus of the essay. The winner of the undergraduate contest will receive free membership in NADS for one year and a Dostoevsky-themed swag.

Acad. Job: István Deák Visiting Professorship(s) in East Central European Studies (Columbia University)

Columbia University invites applications for István Deák Visiting Professorship(s) in East Central European Studies for one or two semesters (fall and/or spring) in the academic year 2021-2022. The professorship, commemorating Professor Deák’s legacy of excellence in research and teaching, is open to scholars who have active interest and accomplishments in East and Central European studies. Appointment(s) will be open-rank, to be filled at any level from Visiting Assistant to Visiting Full Professor.

The visiting professor(s) will be appointed in one of the Humanities or Social Science departments of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The visitors will teach two courses per semester, one a lecture course of broad interest for undergraduates, the other a seminar for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students. The visitors are expected to give one public lecture and participate in the academic life of the University, whose interests in East and Central European studies are well represented on campus by the East Central European Center, the European Institute, and the Harriman Institute.

Fully-Funded Academic Fellowships in Russia (American Councils)

Deadline (extended): February 15, 2021

Provided by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York, the American Councils Academic Fellowships in Russia program (AFR) will support U.S. graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars as they conduct research for three to nine consecutive months on topics within the social sciences disciplines in Russia. 

The total value of each fellowship ranges from $10,000 – $45,000, with actual level of support depending on the duration of the overseas research period and the academic rank of the awardee. Typical awards include: 

  • International airfare 
  • Academic affiliation with a leading local university or educational institution 
  • Visa(s) arranged by American Councils in collaboration with host institutions 
  • Housing and living stipends 
  • Health insurance 
  • Ongoing logistical support from American Councils

Funding: Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy Grant

Aim and Mission

  • To support emerging scholars through small grants;
  • To promote scholarship with a social policy application; and
  • To encourage projects that address contemporary issues in the social sciences.

Grants are based solely on merit. Each is worth a total of $7,500; $5,000 is awarded initially and $2,500 upon completion of the project.

Grad Program: MA and PhD in Literature and Slavic Linguistics (University of Washington)

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Washington invites applications to its M.A. and Ph.D. programs in Literature and Slavic Linguistics starting in Fall, 2021.

We offer our top applicant a three-year initial funding package (1 year of tuition/fee waiver and a generous stipend, plus two years of TAships/RAships) plus a recruitment allowance of $3,000-5,000.

We seek students who have had at least four years of Russian language training and other related coursework (although those with less will still be considered). We also welcome applicants who have completed an M.A. in Slavic Languages and Literatures (or related fields). Please note we require a Skype/Zoom interview, conducted partly in the relevant language, as part of our application process.

Grad Program: PhD Fellow in Linguistics– Keyword/Keymorph Analysis of Russian and Norwegian News Media (The Arctic University of Norway)

A PhD position in Linguistics is available at the Department of Language and Culture (ISK)Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education (HSL). The position is part of the THREAT-DEFUSER project which explores the role of “soft” information strategies propagated through mass and social media that can be used in hybrid warfare. We investigate Norwegian perceptions of Russia, as well as Russian perceptions of Norway, in the context of Norwegian national security.

The position is affiliated with both the CLEAR (Cognitive Linguistics: Empirical Approaches to Russian) and Sami language technology (Giellatekno) research groups.

ISK offers one-year programmes, as well as full Bachelor and Master programmes in the following fields: General linguistics, literature, art history, media and documentation studies, English, Kven, Finnish, Norwegian, Russian, Sami, Spanish, and German. It also offers PhD programmes in linguistics, cultural/literary studies, art history, as well as media and documentation studies.

Fulbright in Poland

The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers opportunities for American academics, artists, and experienced professionals to lecture (4-9 months) or conduct research (3-9 months) at Polish academic and research institutions. Proposals are welcome from candidates in all disciplines with established relations with the host institution. 

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program allows graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals, and artists to conduct their own research projects for two academic semesters at Poland’s best universities and research centers. Proposals are welcome from candidates in all disciplines with established relations with the host institution. 

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program (ETA) places recent U.S. college graduates and young professionals at universities and institutions of higher education across Poland and allows them to teach or co-teach practical and specialized professional English language classes for two academic semesters. Candidates with prior teaching experience are especially welcome to apply. Beginning in Spring 2020, the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State will fully fund a preparatory 60-hour online TESOL course for all incoming ETAs. The Fulbright Specialist Program aims to provide a short-term (2 to 6 weeks), on-demand project collaboration with Polish institutions. Project activities may include delivering a seminar, workshop or guest lecture, consulting on faculty or workforce development, conducting needs assessments or evaluations for a program or institution, or developing academic or training curricula and materials.
