The National Endowment for Democracy (NED), a federally funded, private, nonprofit grantmaking organization that works to support freedom around the world, seeks an Assistant Program Officer or Program Officer for Southeast Europe. The position is based in Washington, D.C.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Program Officer (APO) or Program Officer (PO) will work with the regional director and senior program staff to manage the Endowment’s grant programs in the Southeast Europe region, with emphasis on Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia, and potentially Central Europe, as well as other countries in Europe as needed.

Acad. Job: Assistant Professor of Russian (Middlebury College)

The Department of Russian invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Russian, tenure-track, to begin in Fall 2023. The position entails teaching Russian language at all levels and courses in English on Russian culture and literature. Research specialization is open; we especially encourage applications from scholars interested in teaching topics relating to empire, post-coloniality, gender, race or ethnicity, and who can help make our curriculum more inclusive of marginalized perspectives and experiences. Applicants should demonstrate an ability to teach Russian language, literature and culture, possess native or near-native fluency in Russian and English, and have experience and great enthusiasm for teaching language at the undergraduate level. The typical teaching load will be 2 courses in the fall semester, 2 courses in the spring semester, plus 1 Winter Term course in every other year, teaching the four-week intensive continuation of Beginning Russian. The new colleague will also have the opportunity to contribute to the college-wide curriculum, including teaching a first-year seminar.

Corruption and Clientelism: Exploring Recent Developments

Many countries around the world, especially the new democracies and transitional societies, are plagued by clientelism and corruption. Its prevalence in many contexts raises questions about how it works and what are its consequences. Earlier research emphasizes their instrumental use for electoral manipulation and mobilization, the means through which political parties develop networks in society, and the multi-faceted conditions in which these linkages develop. The consequences of corruption and clientelism were studied mainly in relation to how benefits can enhance the trust and legitimacy of public authorities, the advantages brought by financial incentives to different types of candidates, and the broader effects for party politics and functioning of the political system.

This cluster aims not only to focus on “peripheral” stories and archives in a geographical sense, but also to engage with the diversity of genealogies of thinking, remembering, performing, and producing knowledge in Central Asia.
