Graduate Student Research Fellowships: Harry Ransom Center (UT Austin)

Deadline: November 4, 2024

The Harry Ransom Center will award 50 Research Fellowships for it’s 2025-2026 Humanities program. These fellowships are open to graduate students (including doctoral candidates), academic faculty at any career stage, and independent researchers such as journalists and artists who require substantial on-site archival research. Application deadline is November 4, 2024 by 5:00 pm CST. Three types of fellowships are available: 

  1. One-to-Two-Month Fellowships ($3,500 per month): for projects that require extensive use of the Center’s collections.
  2. Travel Stipends ($2,000) are available for those requiring significant on-site research and cannot be combined with other Ransom Center fellowships
  3. Dissertation Fellowships ($2,000) are available for graduate students whose doctoral dissertation require use of the Center’s collections. 

NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship

Deadline: October 3, 2024

The NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship offers $27,500 to support the writing phase of a dissertation, with funds distributed over one academic year. Fellows also attend two professional development retreats and select a mentor for ongoing guidance. Apply by October 3, 2024, by 5:00 pm ET. The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin in September 2025, pending budgetary approval. The area of specialization is fully open and all primary fields of specialization within Slavic, Eastern European, and Eurasian languages, literatures, and cultures will be considered. We are especially keen to receive applications from candidates whose research traverses our region of study, foregrounding one or more cultural and linguistic communities from the following aggregate groupings: Eastern European; East Central European; South Slavic; Central Asian; Russian and Russophone (including diasporic Russophone); and indigenous Eurasian (including within the Russian Federation). Candidates with additional fields of specialization in such areas as art history; digital humanities; disability studies; film and media studies; music; performance studies; race, ethnicity, and migration studies; women’s, gender, and sexuality studies are particularly welcome.

Acad. Job: Assistant Professor of Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (Oberlin College)

The Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies Program at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences in Russian language, literature, and culture. We seek a dynamic, versatile, and broadly interdisciplinary scholar and pedagogue who shows strong potential for future leadership in both the program and the college, who can teach the Russian language at multiple levels, and who can offer a range of courses in translation, for a broad audience of majors and non-majors alike, on 19th, 20th, and 21st-century Russian literature and corollary areas such as film, philosophy, and the intersection of culture and politics. The ability to teach across multiple periods is desirable, as is secondary expertise in other (non-Russian) cultural traditions (including Europe, Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Siberia). Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning fall semester of 2025, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.

CFP: “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Translation in the Teaching and Researching of Slavic Languages and Literatures”

Purpose, Aims, and Foci of the Thematic Issue:  

The topic of AI has been gaining significant traction in the field of Slavic Studies. Major conferences now feature panels and streams dedicated to AI integration, and numerous professional training events have been organized to equip instructors with the skills needed to utilize AI tools in teaching and research. 

This thematic issue seeks to capitalize on this growing momentum by documenting the integration of Artificial Intelligence technologies in the teaching and research of Slavic languages and literatures. The focus will be on how these advancements can be effectively leveraged to enhance both pedagogical practices and scholarly inquiry. AI applications, such as machine learning, AI text and image generators and digital humanities tools, offer new methodologies for analyzing Slavic texts, teaching language skills, and understanding cultural contexts. The purpose of this issue is to provide an overview of current teaching and research practices and bring together diverse perspectives from educators, linguists, and researchers to reflect on the potentials and challenges of incorporating AI into the study and teaching of Slavic literatures and cultures.

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Princeton University invites applications for an assistant (tenure-track) professor position beginning in September 2025. We are seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and productive scholar and teacher who would complement the research and teaching agenda of our present faculty. Donna Tussing Orwin Essay Competition on Tolstoy

We’re approaching the deadline for essay submissions to the first annual Donna Tussing Orwin Essay Competition for early career scholars writing on Tolstoy. Please submit or circulate among those who might be interested!

Eligible scholars (undergraduate, graduate students, pre-tenure scholars) are encouraged to submit essays (approximately 8,000 words) on any topic related to Tolstoy. Please send submissions to tgershko@andrew.cmu.edu. They will be evaluated by the editors as well as a panel of judges, and the winning essay will receive a cash prize and publication in Tolstoy Studies JournalThe deadline for submission is the second Friday in September (9/13/2024). The winner will be announced in early November, and the selected essay will be published in our next issue in early 2025.
