Prof. Devel.: Archaeology and Geophysics of the Roman Frontier Field School (Transylvania, Romania)

“We are continuing to make great strides into a new understanding of the development of the Roman frontier populations. Dacia (i.e. modern historical Transylvania) was, arguably, the most important frontier of the Roman Empire: its gold and silver sustained the collapsing imperial economy for two centuries. However, the “imperial idea” on the Eastern European Provincial frontier was more complex that Rome ever expected it… and it even outlasted the idea of Rome itself. Local Roman Provincial realities, born out of economic, cultural, social and political creolization, constant and dynamic negotiation of power, and shifting populations have outlived the ideological centers that have claimed historical ownership of these regions, creating their own distinct expressions of identity.

Our programs offer a very extensive approach to the anthropology and archaeology of the Roman frontier environments, through field work, laboratory analysis and lectures. Our participants will be able to experience several field approaches, ranging from Classical excavation, anthropological site exploration, traditional STP (shovel test pit), geochemical soil (phosphate) and geophysical (Ground Penetrating Radar – GPR) surveys, aerial and satellite imagery analysis. Our programs provide a complete and scientifically integrated approach to a Classical site, in a very complex environment. In a region fundamentally important to our understanding of European genesis.

Applications for the Ted Strauss Civic Internship Awards from UT-Austin undergraduate students are now being accepted!

Multiple $2,000 stipends are available to supplement summer internships in the fields of policy, public service, journalism, political communication, government, or politics.

Previous award winners have worked for CNN, the U.S. Department of Education, the United States Senate, Defenders of Wildlife, the Muscular Dystrophy Association among other organizations and governmental agencies.

An International Scholarly Conference organized by
the Max van der Stoel Institute at South East European University &
the Research Center for Areal Linguistics at the Macedonian Academy of Arts & Sciences

Balkan peoples in the course of centuries of living in a multicultural and multilingual
environment have attempted to interpret the world around them in a common fashion while at the same time preserving a variety of distinctive features, such as language and dialect. Significant cultural interactions, especially during the attested period of the Balkan Linguistic League, have brought about the convergence of inherited linguistic structures in the respective Balkan languages combined with varieties of common lexical elements, all conducive to more effective communication among the peoples involved.

At a time when some political actors are seeking to convince various publics that “they have nothing a common” (a phrase deployed stridently during the Yugoslav Wars of Succession), this conference seeks to bring new perspectives to the roles of multiculturalism and language contact as vital factors in mutual understanding and a shared worldview, a topic that is both timely and in need of deeper scholarly engagement. Papers dealing with the peoples and languages of the Balkans (as well as Balkan peoples and languages living beyond the Balkans) are especially welcome, but any paper relevant to the main themes of the conference is eligible to be submitted for consideration (see below). Academic Studies Press is seeking candidates for the position of Acquisitions Editor or Acquisitions Editor Associate.

The Acquisitions Editor or Acquisitions Editor Associate will be responsible for acquiring scholarly and academic titles in Slavic and Eurasian Studies.

Candidates should have a PhD in Slavic or Eurasian Studies or a related field. Preference will be given to a candidate with editorial experience and a record of acquisitions, extensive contacts with a wide array of potential authors, and fluency in the critical literature of and the newest developments in these fields. Experience in securing funding for books requiring subsidies is desirable. The successful candidate for this position will work with the Director of the Press to design a focused publishing program, taking into consideration the best opportunities in these fields, as well as the candidate’s interests, professional training, and publishing experience.

The Acquisitions Editor or Acquisition Editor Associate  will carry out the following responsibilities:

  • Solicit and evaluate book proposals and manuscripts in the above stated areas
  • Solicit, evaluate, and process reports from peer reviewers
  • Present proposed books to the Director of Press
  • Negotiate contracts
  • Prepare accurate budgets for books acquired
  • Identify and secure funding for books requiring subsidies
  • Maintain accurate and timely schedules for transmittal of manuscripts to production
  • Actively participate in sales and marketing plans for promoting publications

Students commit to using their target language as their only means of communication for the entire summer – in class, in their shared living space on campus, at meals, and at co-curricular activities that combine to create a language immersion experience.
