Job: Summer Russian Instructor (Pitt SLI)

Russian Instructor Slavic Languages & Literatures – Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh – (21000049)

The Slavic, East European and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute (SLI) at the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures seeks instructors of Russian for the summer of 2021.

Instructors will teach an 8-week intensive course during SLI’s summer session, which runs from June 7-July 30. Classes meet five days a week from 9am-2:50pm. In additional to classroom teaching, instructors are expected to help plan cultural programming for their language program and attend events for the whole institute, such as film and lecture series, workshops, and picnics. Instructors may be asked to team teach. SLI expects that our programs will be conducted in an in-person format on the main campus the University of Pittsburgh, with the added option for students to participate synchronously online. If gathering on campus is prohibited in connection with COVID-19 mitigation, instructors will teach online synchronously via Zoom.

This online course is for anyone who is interested in Ukrainian literature. The course will discuss the romantics and the avant-garde, the modernists and the dissidents, the post-modernists and the feminists as well as the rich literary scene of contemporary Ukraine. Each seminar will be delivered by an expert in the field of Ukrainian literature. All texts will be read in the English translation and made available to students enrolled on the course. No prior knowledge of the Ukrainian language or literature is required to enrol on this course. Call for Papers: The University of Texas at Austin Announces the 2021 “Bobby R. Inman Award” for Student Scholarship on Intelligence

The Intelligence Studies Project of The University of Texas at Austin announces the 7th annual competition recognizing outstanding student research and writing on topics related to intelligence and national security. The winner of the “Inman Award” will receive a cash prize of $5,000, with two semifinalists each receiving a cash prize of $2,500. This competition is open to unpublished work by undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in degree programs at accredited U.S. higher education institutions during the 2020-21 academic year. The deadline for submitting papers is June 30, 2021.

About the journal: DiSlaw is a multilingual, subject-specific language journal for Slavic foreign and heritage languages in German-speaking countries. As a theoretically well founded and practice-oriented journal, DiSlaw targets everybody who is concerned with teaching Slavic foreign and heritage languages. The first issue of the newly founded open access journal DiSlaw (Didaktik der Slawischen Sprachen) is dedicated to the topic of motivation with the aim of stimulating discourse on motivation from the perspective of teaching and learning Slavic languages. The first issue of DiSlaw will not only focus on motivational aspects of online learning, but also deal with general questions regarding motivation in the (foreign) language classroom, as well as the motivational design of teaching and learning processes.

Reminder that the American Literary Translators Association is offering Virtual Travel Fellowships, an opportunity for emerging translators closing next week.
Each year, ALTA offers a number of fellowships to emerging translators to assist them in participating in the annual ALTA conference. This year with the shift to a mixed-presence conference, ALTA is once again pivoting its annual Travel Fellowship program to a Virtual Travel Fellowship program: the selected Fellows will each receive a $500 prize and their work will be celebrated with a virtual reading during the conference.

CFP: Online International Workshop “Kojeve: Here and Now”

Alexandre Kojève is widely recognized as one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century. Indeed, the breadth of his work, which spans from a phenomenology of religion, through theoretical considerations on modern art, to one of the first philosophical treatments of quantum physics, would seem to justify this reputation. Regardless, the reception of his thought tends to be restricted to a single dimension concerning his lectures on Hegel and their ongoing influence. As a result, most accounts of Kojève’s philosophy begin and end with an analysis of his commentary on Hegel—a tendency that, until quite recently, has gone largely unchallenged.

The goal is to bring together those who are currently engaged with elements of Kojève’s oeuvre that have, at least up to now, been relegated to the status of ‘minor works’. These include, but are not limited to, his early ruminations on the philosophy of in-existence found in his “Diary of a Philosopher”, philosophy of religion (Solov’ev, atheism), philosophy of science (quantum physics, determinism), aesthetics (Kandinsky, Surrealism), political philosophy (authority, right), and ontology found in his so-called “attempt” at a system of knowledge. We also, of course, welcome scholarship that makes use of his many scattered writings in the form of letters, reviews, short essays and presentations.
