The University of Virginia Slavic Society of Graduate Students is delighted to announce a call for proposals for its 11^th annual Slavic Humanities Forum. The conference will take place March 20-21, 2020 in Charlottesville, Virginia and will feature scholar and professor Myroslav Shkandrij from the University of Manitoba as keynote speaker. A reception will be followed by a day of presentations and discussion.

This call for papers aims for a broad range of proposals from undergraduate, graduate, and independent levels of junior scholars in the Humanities and related fields with a focus on contexts inside or outside the Russian-speaking world.

Instructors will teach 6- or 8-credit intensive courses during SLI’s summer sessions, which run from June 1-July 10 (6-credit courses) and June 1-July 24 (8-credit courses). Classes meet five days a week from 9am-2:50pm. In additional to classroom teaching, instructors are expected to help plan cultural programming for their language program and attend events for the whole institute, such as film and lecture series, workshops, and picnics. Depending on language, instructors may be asked to team teach.

Applicants must have a master’s degree in the language they will teach or related field and experience teaching in a college or university setting using the communicative approach or other proficiency-based methods.

The University of Pittsburgh Slavic Department (https://www.slavic.pitt.edu/) invites applications to its graduate program, which provides a full range of courses, with particular strengths in the study of Russian culture, Russian/Soviet cinema, and Russian literature. Alternative # 1 (Slavic). Our literature and culture program has supported dissertations in such diverse areas as contemporary Russian prose, interwar émigré philosophy, Soviet postmodern culture, Thaw cinema, 1930s-40s Soviet civic poetry, prison culture of the Belomor Canal, post-Soviet philosophy, the St. Petersburg cityscape, the Soviet anekdot, and Stagnation-era television serials. Grad. Program: Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies (University of Oregon)

The Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies Program at the
University of Oregon (REEES) invites applications for its two-year
M.A. degree. REEES is the home of undergraduate and graduate programs
in all fields connected to Russia, Eastern Europe, and former Soviet
Eurasia at the University of Oregon.

REEES is one of the oldest programs devoted to the study of Russia,
Eastern Europe, and Eurasia in the United States. Established in 1968,
it was a founding institutional member of the American Association for
the Advancement of Slavic Studies. In its first three decades, REEES
brought together scholars with a shared interest in the region for
occasional lectures, collaborative projects, and social events, and it
allowed students in other departments to earn a certificate of mastery
in the Russian and East European area. REEES today reflects this
long history of interdisciplinary scholarly interaction, but the 1998
merger of REEES with the Russian Department has transformed a loose
collegial grouping into a comprehensive degree-granting program at the
bachelor’s and master’s levels. Our roster of 16 participating
faculty members and numerous associated, emeritus, and courtesy
faculty comprises innovative and committed teachers, with
distinguished and in many cases internationally-recognized records of
scholarly publication.

Call for Submissions: Journal for Eastern European and Eurasian Relations

The Journal for Eastern European and Eurasian Relations is an undergraduate publication of the Swarthmore Project for Eastern European Relations. The journal is a collaborative project between the students at Swarthmore, Haverford, and Bryn Mawr Colleges that seeks to enrich and complicate the conversation surrounding post-Soviet spaces. We are seeking submissions for our first issue focusing on the theme of Activism Under Totalitarianism, which will be published in the Spring of 2020. The Journal will accept historical, literary, political, and cultural analyses as well as creative submissions.
Submission Criteria:

Your work must have been completed during undergraduate study.
Limit of three submissions per student, per semester.
Submissions cannot have been previously submitted to the The Journal nor previously published anywhere.
Submissions must be less than twenty double-spaced pages long and preferably no shorter than five.

Each submission accepted for publication is edited by a team of professors and undergraduate editors.Note: Please submit work via this link. You will be required to make an account in order to do so. Please do not email us directly with submissions.
We will give priority to submissions received by January 31st, 2020.

The Higher School of Economics School of Linguistics in Moscow, Russia, invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in one of the following fields: second language acquisition, computational linguistics, machine learning, corpus linguistics, Slavic languages, computational lexicography, typology, lexical semantics, construction grammar, sociolinguistics, history of language.

Requirements

The general requirements for the postdoctoral fellowship positions are the following:

Candidates must hold a recent PhD in the field of linguistics, Slavic languages, or computer science, or related areas which was awarded over the last 5 years or received before starting work at HSE in a relevant field by an internationally recognized university and has been assessed by external reviewers as having the potential to pursue research that is publishable in leading peer-reviewed journals;
Candidates should have a strong background in computational, experimental, field, corpus or theoretical methods in linguistics, ability to work in a team, conduct and publish high quality research.
Fluent English is an obligatory condition as research and other activities are conducted in English. Knowledge of Russian is not required;
Relevant experience will be an asset although not required.

Acad. Job: Visiting Lecturer in Russian Language/Literature (Bowdoin College)

The Department of Russian at Bowdoin College invites applications for a one-year visiting lecturer position in the 2020-2021 academic year. The Department seeks a candidate who would welcome the opportunity to contribute to a small but vibrant and growing Russian program both inside and out of the classroom. Applicants should be trained in the latest methods of foreign language pedagogy and should be able to show evidence of excellence in teaching. Bowdoin provides conference travel support as well as competitive internal funding for research and other professional development.

The successful candidate will teach five courses over the academic year: these may include language at various levels, content-based advanced language courses and/or literature and culture courses taught in English. Candidates must have native or near-native proficiency in both Russian and English. Ph.D. in Russian language and literature is preferred; ABD candidates considered.

The University of Arizona’s Department of Russian and Slavic Studies invites applications to our MA degree program. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with a final deadline of March 1, 2020 to be considered for financial aid. Early applications are encouraged.

The Masters of Arts in Russian and Slavic Studies offers a diversified program of study with courses in language, literature, linguistics, and culture. The MA Program has two tracks that offer students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to gain expertise in their specific fields of interest. Students in the Language, Literature, and Linguistics (LLL) track complete a rigorous program of study that culminates in MA Exams; graduates on the Russian and East European Studies (REES) track develop a specific area of focus and complete a MA thesis.

In years past, the department has been able to fund or partially fund eligible graduate students’ study through teaching assistantships and fellowships. Generous funding packages for qualified students include tuition remission, health insurance, and a monthly stipend during the academic year. Students who are residents of Arizona, Nevada, Utah or New Mexico are eligible for in-state tuition.
