The 2020 Indiana University Language Workshop is accepting applications for intensive study of Russian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS), Ukrainian,
Hungarian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Kyrgyz, Mongolian, Turkmen, Uzbek, and 13 other languages.

Fellowships and scholarships are available for graduate students, undergraduate students, and lifelong learners.
All participants pay in-state tuition. Graduate credit is available for most courses.

Good afternoon! We would like to invite you to join the Slavic Reference Service at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for an online forum discussion: Indigenous Studies Forum. The forum will be held on December 5, 2019 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm CST. This forum seeks to raise awareness of current projects and trends in scholarly communication in indigenous studies. Areas of focus include cultural preservation, digitization, digital humanities, language revitalization, and innovative research methods in teaching and learning environments. Prof. Dev. : Webinar: Educating Gen Z: Russian Language and Instruction in 2020

A 2018 Chronicle of Higher Education special report on educating the new generation of students revealed several striking features of Gen Z’s expectations and preferences as students. This webinar will examine the profile of the Gen Z learner (born 1996-2015) against the backdrop of the proficiency-oriented classroom and suggest ways that instructors at the secondary and post-secondary level can make their programs more relevant, attractive, and meaningful to our newest cohorts of learners. Based on the findings of the Chronicle report, the webinar will also discuss the place of international education and study abroad programs in the next decade of the 2020s.

About the presenter:
Thomas Jesús Garza is Distinguished Teaching Associate Professor in the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies and Director of the Texas Language Center at the University of Texas at Austin. He is also currently the president of the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR). He teaches courses on the Russian language, language pedagogy, and contemporary Russian culture. He has received numerous prizes for undergraduate and graduate teaching. He has published numerous language textbooks, book chapters and articles on Russian language and culture, and online resources on language and culture. His current research is on reverse design and intensive language instruction, and on comparative portraits of machismo in contemporary Russian and Latino popular cultures.

The Russian and East European Institute (REEI) at Indiana University Bloomington welcomes applicants to our Master of Arts program in Russian and East European Studies for Fall 2020. Established in 1958, REEI administers one of the country’s leading programs in Russian and East European area studies. 95 + faculty from 18 departments and schools are affiliated with REEI, which is part of IU’s Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies. Grad. Program: Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies (University of Wisconsin-Madison)

The Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia (CREECA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications to its MA Degree Program in Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies (REECAS). The REECAS curriculum, which provides interdisciplinary area studies training for emerging professionals, is designed to promote:

· A broad understanding of the cultural, political, economic, social, and historical factors that have shaped the development of societies in Eurasia, Russia, and Eastern and Central Europe

· Professional-level proficiency in one or more languages of Eurasia and Eastern and Central Europe

· Knowledge of methodological and analytical approaches of different disciplines that will contribute to a better understanding of the region and prepare students for conducting advanced research.

The application deadline is January 2, 2020 (for students wishing to matriculate in September 2020). We welcome and encourage applications from Eurasia Foreign Area Officers (FAOs).

Lang. Training/Resource: Reality Czech Online Textbook and Curriculum (UT Austin)

Reality Czech is a next generation openly licensed Czech textbook and curriculum currently under development by Dr. Christian Hilchey from the Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies in collaboration with the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning (COERLL) at the University of Texas at Austin.

All materials will be freely available online under a Creative Commons license to any university or individuals who wish to use or adapt them.

Grad. Program: German and Russian Studies (University of Missouri)

The University of Missouri Department of German and Russian Studies invites qualified candidates to apply to our MA program in Russian Studies. The MA is a two-year, intensive course of study with an emphasis on literature and intellectual history, and with opportunities for cross-disciplinary coursework. Students may also earn a Minor in College Teaching.

Eligible applicants may receive a graduate assistantship (on a competitive basis) that covers tuition and pays a stipend. Graduate assistants typically help teach either in a beginning Russian sequence or in the writing-intensive civilization course.

The Russian Studies program at the University of Missouri is small but active, and students receive careful advising to help develop their particular study and research interests. The MA program also offers mentoring and resources for career readiness and professionalization.

Intersections Between High-Leverage Teaching Practices (HLTPs) and Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) Intersections Between HLTPs and PBLL is a short course designed to provide world language educators ideas for implementing the elements of six high-leverage teaching practices (HLTPs) in project-based language learning (PBLL) contexts. This self-study course comprises seven lessons, with each lesson containing a video of an interview with experts in PBLL, a quiz, links to additional materials on the topic of the lesson, and a discussion prompt. An optional badge is available for a small fee for participants who fulfill all course requirements.

Job: Counselors and Russian Teachers for Summer Russian Immersion Program (Minnesota)

Concordia Language Villages’ summer Russian immersion program “Лесное озеро” is actively recruiting a diverse pool for positions as counselors and high school credit teachers in our residential program for kids ages 6-18, July 6 – August 8, 2020 in Bemidji, MN.

High school credit teachers should have experience teaching Russian as they will be expected to independently plan lessons and create materials and assessments for a class that covers a year of high school Russian in four weeks.
Counselors teach Russian language and culture in an informal program with extensive mentoring and support, and also lead camp activities (canoeing, art, etc.) These positions are appropriate for those with abundant energy and a dedication to and background in work with children and teens. They do not require teaching experience, as we expect to provide these staff with intensive teacher training, a very thorough curriculum, and in-service support. We anticipate that we will have a particular need for applicants with experience in outdoor skills/nature /camping/ecology, folk art, guitar/balalaika/domra, Central Asia, and/or the Caucuses.
These positions require a strong command of informal spoken Russian. Staff members are expected to be able to use Russian to communicate both in staff meetings and with campers in all daily life situations. Most successful domestic applicants are either heritage speakers or L2 speakers who have already spent at least a year in a Russian-speaking country. We also hire international staff through our J1 camp counselor visa program.
