Call for Proposals: Teaching Central Asia

Deadline: January 24, 2025

The Central Asia Research Forum aims to, through formal and informal discussions, bring together scholars in all disciplines and stages of the research process to discuss the theme of Teaching Central Asia. Since 1991 (and before), scholars have been trying to take on a recurring question, how should we study and teach Central Asia? Specifically, what new conceptual frameworks should we develop to convey the imbalance in sources, perspectives, and academic training, including disparities in access to publishing outlets and the production of knowledge itself? We invite scholars to submit proposals that retrace the founding of Central Asian Studies, in the region and abroad, and the numerous academic institutions that trained (and continue to do so) generations of scholars to study and teach this region.

The annual conference of the Canadian Association of Slavists will take place at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta) May 8 through 10, 2025. This is the first year the conference will take place independently of the annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Acad. Job: Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian (Middlebury College, Vermont)

The Department of Russian invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian, one year position to begin in Fall 2025. Research specialization is open. Applicants should demonstrate an ability to teach Russian literature and culture, native or near-native fluency in Russian and English, and interest and experience in teaching language at the undergraduate level. Candidates are expected to teach in the fall/spring semesters as well as in winter term.

Job: Remote Translators Needed for Legal Interpretation, Russian (Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network)

The Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network (GAIN) is a nonprofit organization that protects and empowers immigrant survivors of crime and persecution. We are seeking individuals who can provide remote Russian-English interpretation for nonprofit lawyers working with detained Russian-speaking immigrants. These individuals are held in immigration detention with little to no access to legal representation. Providing interpretation ensures that GAIN attorneys can expand their legal services to a population that is disproportionately detained and often isolated while in detention.

Payment is $25/hour. All interpretation sessions will take place virtually via Skype. Scheduling for client meetings is flexible, with meetings occurring between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM EST and lasting no longer than an hour on any given day.

Just as Russian culture and literature, Dostoevsky’s work can be approached from a multidisciplinary perspective. Philosophical, historical, sociological, psychological, religious aspects, and many others are part of the history of the criticism of Dostoevsky’s works. With the title “Dostoevsky: Multiple Perspectives”, the conference seeks to broaden this debate in Brazil and is open to the participation of Dostoevsky scholars from across the country for the presentation of papers.

The Brazilian Dostoevsky Society invites all of the researchers interested in discussing the life and work of the writer to participate in the II International Conference “Dostoevsky: Multiple Perspectives”, which will be held on March 26-27, 2025.

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has heightened the geopolitical importance of the region, catalyzing significant shifts in Eastern Europe and Eurasia – including Russia itself. To fully grasp these changes, a deep understanding of Russia’s post-communist evolution is crucial, coupled with a comparative analytical framework tailored to the region’s complexities.
This course, led by esteemed Eastern European and Russian émigré scholars, will explore the political, economic, and social dynamics that have shaped Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union, extending to the present ramifications of the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Participants will engage in lectures and discussions to analyze Russia’s development trajectory, examining concepts like informality, patronal autocracy, and relational economy to assess the trends of democratization and de-democratization. Transcending the conventional “hybrid regime” paradigm of political science, this course introduces participants to new interdisciplinary approaches informed by the Eurasian literature on the region.
