Funding: Jerry D. Wilcox Community Engagement Scholarship

Deadline: April 1, 2020

The Jerry D. Wilcox Community Engagement Scholarship is a $2,500 fall tuition award that recognizes an undergraduate international student who has demonstrated leadership in their undergraduate program through academic achievement; participation in campus and community organizations – particularly in leadership roles, and has made positive contributions to the campus community.

Thank you letters are required upon being selected for the Jerry D. Wilcox Community Engagement Scholarship. Awards will not be applied to recipients’ accounts until a thank you letter is received.

Application Details

The application for the fall 2020 Jerry D. Wilcox Community Engagement Scholarship will be available March 1, 2020. The application deadline is April 1, 2020 by 5 pm.

In addition to the online application, the following documents are required for your application to be considered complete:

Applicants will need to provide an Essay of Involvement (500-1500 words, typed, double-spaced) that addresses all of the following points:

Discuss the importance of leadership and community engagement as it relates to your own involvement
Describe, with specific examples, the positive impact that your involvement has had on yourself, others, and the community
Summarize the significant lessons that you have learned by participating in your listed activities (ex: how your experiences have helped you better understand U.S. culture, how your experiences have impacted the way you view issues in your home country, etc.)

Funding: International Education Fee Scholarship

Deadline: April 1, 2020

The International Education Fee (IEF) Scholarship was initially established in 1989 by a student referendum. The IEF Scholarship supports scholarships for both incoming international students and outbound students studying abroad. This specific scholarship application will benefit first-time incoming undergraduate UT international students and covers tuition and required fees on your tuition and fee bill for up to 4 years.

Application Details

The application for the 2020-2021 International Education Fee Scholarship will be available March 1, 2020. The deadline for application is April 1, 2020 by 5 pm.

In addition to the online application, the following documents are required for your application to be considered complete:

Personal Statement: Provide a typed statement (maximum 3 pages) that addresses all of the following topics:
- What challenges have you experienced in accessing education in your country and how did you overcome these challenges?
- How do you plan on positively impacting your home community as a result of completing a degree at UT Austin?
- What contributions will you make to the university as a UT Austin student?
- Discuss your financial need. If you are not awarded this scholarship, how will you fund your education at UT Austin?
Letters of Recommendation: You must provide at least 2 letters of recommendation. The letters of recommendation must be in English.
Special documentation (if applicable): Submit any special documentation you feel necessary to support your personal statement.

CFP: 12 Annual Romanian Studies Conference (Indiana University-Bloomington)

The Romanian Studies Organization at Indiana University is pleased to announce the 12th Annual Romanian Studies Conference, taking place April 10-12 2020, on the Bloomington campus.

The keynote address, titled “The Bucharest Underground,” will be delivered by Dr. Bruce O’Neill, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Saint Louis University. His current project, The Bucharest Underground, is an ethnography of subterranean Bucharest and examines the way post-socialist urban life unfolds beneath the sidewalk down inside Metro stations, basements, and cemeteries, for example. Professor O’Neill’s research has been supported by grants and fellowships from the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, the Fulbright-Hays and the Fulbright programs.

Please submit abstracts of 250-300 words, along with your contact information and a brief biography, in a single .doc, .docx, or .pdf document to Leah Valtin-Erwin at romso@indiana.edu by December 31, 2019. We will send notifications of acceptance by January 30, 2020.

The Program in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies at Smith College invites applications for a 3-year, benefits-eligible position at the rank of Lecturer of Russian to begin July 1, 2020. The position may be renewed dependent on enrollments and funding. Teaching responsibilities include courses in all levels of Russian language. Applicants should have a strong foundation in Russian language and culture pedagogy; candidates with experience in program building and organizing extra- and co-curricular activities are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates who hold a Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures or a related field (ABD acceptable), and applicants with MA in Slavic Languages and Literatures or a related field with college teaching experience will be considered.

Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies at Smith is an interdisciplinary program with a growing number of majors. We are looking for a dynamic, dedicated colleague who will take a leading role in our language curriculum, actively contribute to REEES program building, and participate in study abroad initiatives. The successful candidate will also join a vibrant community of Russian and Eurasian Studies in the Five College area.

Funding/Study Abroad: Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a summer study abroad opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world.

Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad over the summer studying one of 15 critical languages: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu.

The CLS Program, a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is part of a U.S. government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity. CLS plays an important role in preparing American students for the 21st century’s globalized workforce and increasing national competitiveness.

· The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences

· Full scholarship covers all travel, tuition, housing, and a living stipend

· Participants may receive undergraduate academic credit for the equivalent of one year of language classes

Acad. Job: Postdoctoral Teacher-Scholar of Russian Literature and Culture (George Mason University)

The George Mason University, Department of Modern and Classical Languages, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Teacher-Scholar of Russian Literature and Culture, beginning Fall 2020. Candidates will have an active research and publication agenda focused on one or more of the following areas: Post-Soviet Russian literature, nineteenth and twentieth century Russian literature, Russian and (Post-) Soviet film, and cultural studies.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be able to teach undergraduate courses in both English translation and in Russian; courses in translation include those on major Russian writers, survey courses of nineteenth and twentieth century Russian literature, and Russian civilization; courses taught in Russian include Russian poetry and contemporary short fiction. Twelve-month appointment and 2/2 teaching load. Position is renewable for up to three years.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants are required to have a Ph.D. in hand at time of appointment, university-level teaching experience, and native or near-native fluency in Russian. Strong commitment to undergraduate teaching is essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to teach a course on the cultural contributions of Russian and Soviet immigrants to the U.S. is a plus.

Virginia Tech has one of the largest undergraduate Russian programs in the country and has been the recipient of funding for Project GO (Global Officer), a Department of Defense initiative, since 2012. As a Research I institution, Virginia Tech strongly values high scholarly productivity as well as excellence in teaching. The standard teaching load is two/two courses per academic year. The Institute for Slavic Studies of Christian-Abrechts-Universität zu Kiel (Kiel University), Germany, invites applications for a Professorship in Slavic Linguistics with a focus on Historical Linguistics (W2, 100 %, permanent)

The candidate should represent the full scope of Slavic linguistics in research and teaching. Knowledge of Russian and Polish in present-day and in historical perspective is required. At least one other East or West Slavic language is desirable in research and teaching.

Applicants should be willing to work together with other researchers in an interdisciplinary environment. The tasks of the future job holder include participation in the Kiel Center for Eastern European Studies (ZOS) as well as the further development of existing international double degree programs at the Master level (EuPoD and RDT – see www.eupod.de and www.rdt.uni-kiel.de).
