Funding: Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Fellowships (ASEEES)

Deadline: February 1, 2019

ASEEES is accepting applications for two dissertation research fellowships!

Established in 2015, the Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Research Fellowships provide a maximum stipend of $25,000 for doctoral students at US and Canadian universities, who are citizens or permanent residents of the US, to conduct dissertation research in Russia. The Program is open to students in any discipline whose dissertation topics are within 19th – early 21st century Russian historical studies.

As of 2019, ASEEES is offering a Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Completion Fellowship, with a maximum stipend of $25,000, for a doctoral student at US and Canadian universities, who is citizen or permanent resident of the US, to complete their dissertation. The Program is open to students in any discipline whose dissertation topics are within 19th – early 21st century Russian historical studies.

Travel: Internship at “Cosmopolitan” Camp (Novosibirsk)

Educational Center “Cosmopolitan”, Novosibirsk, Russia, is accepting applications for summer internship programs in Novosibirsk and in the Altai Mountains area.

Summer Internships at children’s camps run from mid-June until mid-July 2019, in the delightful countryside just outside Novosibirsk and in the beautiful Altai Mountains area. For the Altai Mountains session there is an exciting excursion and tourist program that comprises many exciting tourist activities such as rafting, horseback riding, hiking, camping, excursions. Tours of Novosibirsk and trips to the beautiful Siberian towns of Tomsk, Irkutsk and to magnificent Lake Baikal can be organized between and after the camp sessions. Funding: Grant for Projects Abroad (IFLE- Dept. Edu)

Did you know that there is a Department of Education grant that provides overseas training, research, and curriculum development experiences for U.S. teachers, faculty, and students?

The International and Foreign Language Education (IFLE) office at the U.S. Department of Education is pleased to announce the opening of the competition for the fiscal year 2019 Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) Program.

The GPA Program provides grants to institutions and private, nonprofit educational entities that organize programs for K–12 teachers, college students, and faculty to engage in short-term or long-term overseas projects focused on training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies. GPA short-term projects include seminars, curriculum development, and group research or study. GPA long-term projects support advanced intensive overseas programs that focus on languages, the humanities, or social sciences.

IFLE expects to make 25 new awards totaling $2.7 million under the FY 2019 GPA competition. The application is now available at www.grants.gov. The deadline to submit an application is March 25, 2019.

Cultures of Dissent in Eastern Europe (1945-1989): Research Approaches in the Digital Humanities

July 15, 2019 – July 23, 2019
Central European University, Budapest

This 7-day seminar in digital humanities research methods is designed to expose a new generation of scholars in Cold War history and culture to methods of analysis and discovery involving computational techniques.
Designed and run by NEP4DISSENT (New Exploratory Phase in Research on East European Cultures of Dissent, nep4dissent.eu), COST Action 16213, the inspiration for the course is built around the transfer of knowledge from technologists and data scientists to humanists. In the course of the 7-day session, the participants will have hands-on experience with the entire life cycle of a digital humanities project design, leading to a single, tangible outcome in the form of a fully searchable and interactive dataset usable for art-curatorial purposes.

No prior knowledge of any computational methods or even data-driven approaches to research are expected from the participants. However, scholars, librarians/archivists, and art and cultural heritage curators, who can bring first-hand knowledge of the main research area, are especially invited.

American Councils for International Education is now accepting applications for its summer 2019 study abroad program in Georgia! We look forward to sending students of all academic backgrounds and language levels abroad this summer. No foreign language experience is required for this program.

Russian Life magazine seeks a Digital Editor intern to curate and compile its weekly e-letter, The Weekly Russia File, and to play an active role in the magazine’s growing digital footprint.

Requirements:

  • Superb English writing skills (native English).
  • Ability to write succinctly, quippily, and knowledgeably about Russian culture (with little or no need for style editor intervention).
  • At least intermediate Russian reading ability.
  • Excellent online search, fact-checking, and news survey skills.
  • Excellent sense of humor and a taste for offbeat, under-the-radar news.
  • Basic HTML skills and comfort with CMS and online blog editing systems, including image manipulation, or willingness to gain this skill.

This is a part-time internship that is scoped at 2-3 hours per week and has a modest stipend.

Funding: Scholarship for Armenia Internship

American Councils is pleased to offer a Summer 2019 scholarship for internships in Armenia, made possible by funding through the U.S. Department of State via the U.S. Study Abroad Grant. This scholarship offers U.S. undergraduate and graduate students exposure to the global workplace through eight-week summer 2019 internships in Armenia. Students gain valuable insight and experience into the tourism/ecotourism sector and economic development in Armenia while developing professional and intercultural skills demanded by today’s market. Internships are conducted in English, with placements available in nature conservation, preservation of wildlife, agribusiness research, cultural heritage, and environmental education.

US Intern Abroad Armenia Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, program compatibility, and academic merit; awards range from $1,000 to $2,000.

To be eligible for U.S. Intern Abroad Armenia funding, applicants must:

  • Apply to the American Councils Overseas Professional & Intercultural Training Program in Armenia;
  • Be U.S. citizens or permanent residents;
  • Be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a higher education institution;
  • Meet the desired qualifications of the internship host.

Study Abroad: Trans-Siberian Study Abroad Program (UNH)

Unique Trans-Siberian Study Abroad Program, University of New Hampshire

What is the program?                       

The UNH Russia Program is a unique summer study abroad opportunity for all interested students to experience first-hand the vastness of Russia. Students travel with UNH faculty and study Russian language, culture, and history with stays in St. Petersburg, Moscow, and a trip across the country on the Trans-Siberian Railroad! Visits include cultural, historical, and political venues (including the Duma, Kremlin, Hermitage, WWII bunker, Gulag Museum, Tatar hat workshop, hiking around Lake Baikal, participate in traditional Russian folk wedding, Lenin’s house in Gorki, banya, Russo-Japanese war fortresses and bunkers in Vladivostok) with readings and discussion at each site.

Prof. Dev: Pedagogy Workshop on Caucasus (U. Illinois U-C)

The American Research Institute of the South Caucasus (ARISC) and the Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center (REEEC) at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign invite applications for a pedagogical workshop on integrating the South Caucasus into higher education classrooms.

The workshop is open to college and university educators and advanced graduate students. Community and City College educators are encouraged to apply.
