Funding: LTLR Grants (Pitt SLI)

Deadline for Applications: February 1, 2019

The University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES) will award up to two Language Teaching and Learning Research (LTLR) Grants for scholars to conduct research projects on-site at Pitt’s Summer Language Institute in June – July 2019. Funded projects must focus on the teaching and learning of one or more of the following priority languages: Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Polish, Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian.
Other languages that are taught at the SLI may be included in a project proposal in addition to these priority languages; see www.sli.pitt.edu for the complete list of language courses offered. Applicants may propose to be in residence in Pittsburgh for either all or a portion of the two-month duration of the SLI, according to the needs of their projects. Teaching Assistant Professor in Polish and Russian

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (http://gsll.unc.edu) is seeking a superior and innovative instructor to teach both introductory and intermediate language courses in both Polish and Russian as well as literature/culture courses. This is a fixed term Teaching Assistant Professor position with a one-year renewable appointment to begin on July 1, 2019.

Doctorate (or foreign equivalent) in Slavic languages and literatures or a related field required by July 1, 2019. Candidates are expected to have familiarity with the methods and technologies used in teaching foreign languages at the college level. Native or near-native proficiency in Polish, Russian, and English required. The successful candidate will carry a full-time, 3/3 teaching load and perform service for the department.

Applicants must apply online here and upload: 1) a letter of application; 2) a CV; 3) a statement of teaching philosophy (1-2 pages); and 4) sample syllabi for both introductory and intermediate language courses (one Polish, one Russian); and 5) the names and contact information for four individuals willing to submit letters of recommendation on their behalf, two of whom must be prepared to discuss the applicant’s language teaching in detail.  These reference providers will be contacted via email with instructions for uploading their letters of support. CFP: Econ. History of Rus (Uni. Wisconsin-Madison)

Deadline for Submissions: December 1, 2018

Call for Papers: Summer Workshop on the Economic History and Historical Political Economy of Russia.

The workshop will be held in Madison, Wisconsin on May 24-25, 2019. Proposals are due December 1, 2018.

Young scholars, including those currently pursuing PhD degrees, are especially encouraged to apply. Interested scholars are also encouraged to attend, even if not on the program. Travel grants and accommodation will be provided for selected graduate students, regardless of proposal status, and for all presenters.

Those interested in presenting should send an abstract and a 3–5 page paper summary by December 1 to events@creeca.wisc.edu. Applicants will be notified of proposal status by January 15, 2019. The deadline for final paper submission is May 1.

Grad Program: Rus Research Fellowships (Uni. Wisconsin-Madison)

Wisconsin Russia Project postdoctoral research fellowships for social scientists, funded with a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York.
January 15, 2019-July 14, 2020.

Fellows are expected to conduct research about Russia in one or more of the five topic areas: 1) Education, labor markets, and inequality; 2) Law and society; 3) Political economy; 4) Identity, place, and migration; and 5) Demographic change. CREECA especially seeks applicants with expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) modeling and/or public policy issues, though these are not absolute requirements for consideration.

Due to the compressed timeline, only U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for consideration during this round.

A second competition for postdocs will be announced, running September 1, 2019 – August 31, 2020 that will be open to citizens of the Russian Federation and other countries.

Grad Program: M.A. REEES (Ohio State Uni)

The Center for Slavic and East European Studies (CSEES) at The Ohio State University is now accepting applications for its MA in Slavic and East European Studies for autumn 2019. The application deadline for international students is November 30, 2018 and for domestic students, December 15, 2018.

The MA in Slavic and East European Studies is an interdisciplinary, terminal degree that prepares students for careers in the government, non-profit, or public sector, or to pursue a PhD. For those interested in a career in the public, military, or private sector, the CSEES MA provides them with the language skills and regional knowledge to understand and analyze the events, culture, history, and politics of a region or country within Eastern Europe/Eurasia. Those wanting to pursue a PhD receive a foundation in the humanities and social sciences while developing a focused approach to the study of the countries of Eastern Europe and Eurasia. All students choose a topical and/or regional specialization, allowing students to customize the degree to their interests. CFP: Eu/Eurasian Undergrad Research (Uni. Pittsburgh)

Deadline for Submissions: January 25, 2019

On Friday, April 12, 2019, the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (REEES), the European Studies Center (ESC), and the International Business Center (IBC) at the University of Pittsburgh will sponsor the annual European and Eurasian Undergraduate Research Symposium. Modeled after traditional academic conferences, this event will give students the opportunity to present their research papers on Europe, Russia and/or Eurasia to discussants and an audience. Limited travel grants are available to help defray expenses for accepted participants located outside of the Pittsburgh region. Deadlines:
1) Students must submit applications with 250-300 word abstracts and paper drafts by January 25, 2019.
2) Selected students will be notified by mid-February 2019.

Academic Job: Summer Russian Instructor (ASU CLI)

Arizona State University seeks a faculty associate to teach intensive Russian in its 2019 summer Critical Languages Institute. Candidates must have a Master’s degree or higher in philology, linguistics, language teaching or a closely related field by the time of appointment; possess native proficiency in Russian; and have at least one year’s experience teaching Russian at the university level to non-native speakers. Strong preference will go to candidates who have successfully taught in intensive language programs, to candidates with experience teaching independently, and to candidates with high levels of proficiency in English. The successful candidates will teach Russian 4 hours a day, five days a week, for eight weeks and will contribute to cultural programming.
