The X International Virtual Forum, IMAGES OF RUSSIAN STUDIES IN VIRTUAL INFORMATIONAL SPACE, will take place September 28-30, 2018 at Dangguk University, Cheonan, Republic of Korea. The aim of the forum is to unite the linguists, methodologists, cultural experts, literary experts, and teachers from different countries in order to identify and analyze cutting edge issues in the humanities, search for the ways to increase efficiency of the international cooperation, and cultural communication in person and virtually. Faculty and graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Sections will address:

  • New horizons in Literature.
  • Innovations in Philology.
  • The increasing role of Bilingualism in Modern Society: Bilingual Education.
  • Translation and Cross-cultural Communication.
  • Foreign Languages and Teaching Methodology, Cross-cultural Aspects of Pedagogy.
  • Sociocultural Problems of the International Migration and Demography
  • Information Technologies and Smart-Technologies in Education.
  • Methodology of the Digital Education, Multimedia.

The forum languages: English, Russian, Korean.

The forum will be held via ADOBE CONNECT PRO MEETING and Skype with the virtual participants. Papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings.

The forum will offer seven discussion panels via a connected communication infrastructure, which will facilitate discussion on innovative developments in theory and practice of education, cross-cultural and migration problems, bilingual education and translation, smart-technologies, problems in philology and literature. Each discussion panel will consist of co-chairs, forum participants, and teachers from leading universities, and the virtual participants.

The participants of the forum will be awarded certificates.

Funding: General Research Grants (Gerda Henkel Stiftung)

Deadline for Applications: June 13, 2018

Applications for research scholarships can be made directly by Postdocs or scholars with Post Doctoral Lecture Qualification. A research scholarship is usually applied for by one scholar who will work on a specific project on his own. An institutional affiliation is not necessary. The simultaneous receipt of salary or retirement pension and a research scholarship is not possible.

The funding period is generally between one and 24 months.

It is possible to apply for:

  • basic scholarship sum

if appropriate

  • supplement for travel abroad (monthly endowment for stays of for weeks or more)
  • family grant award (for children who have not yet turned 18; in case of a positive decision the presentation of the child’s birth certificate is necessary)
    and if required
    • travel expenses
    • material expenses

CFP: Europe in Discourse II: Agendas of Reform (Athens, Greece)

The 2nd Europe in Discourse Conference Agendas of Reform invites papers from a broad range of fields and perspectives on the following topics:

CFP: Original Research on Slavic Languages and Cultures (Poljarnyj Vestnik)

The editors of Poljarnyj Vestnik – An International Journal of Slavic Studies, have announced an invitation for paper submissions. Poljarnyj Vestnik was earlier the working papers of the University of Tromsö, but has been upgraded to an international peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research about Slavic languages, literatures and cultures. Submissions for the fifth volume after the reorganization are now welcomed. Contributions from Slavists from any country and institution are welcome. Articles are published in English or Russian. Funding: Billington Fellowship (Wilson Center)

The Kennan Institute seeks applications from scholars who have received their Ph.D. within the past 10 years for the newly established Billington Fellowship to conduct research on Russian history and culture.

The Billington Fellowship offers a monthly stipend of $3,500, research facilities, a research intern, and computer access. Fellows are required to be in residence at the Kennan Institute, Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. for the duration of the grant. Awardees are expected to begin their appointments within six months of accepting the fellowship.

The Billington Fellow will be based at the Wilson Center’s Kennan Institute in Washington, D.C. for a nine-month term (one academic year). Fellows will receive access to the Library of Congress, National Archives, and policy research centers in Washington, D.C., as well as the opportunity to meet with key experts and officials at the State Department, USAID, Department of Defense, and Congress. While conducting research, the Billington Fellow will be expected to actively participate in discussions with the policy and academic communities. These discussions can be in the form of speaking engagements at the Wilson Center and potentially outside of Washington D.C., as well as attending meetings, conferences, and other activities organized by the Kennan Institute and the Wilson Center. Upon completion of the fellowship, the Billington Fellow will join our growing list of alumni, for whom the Kennan Institute will continue to offer opportunities for collaboration and engagement.

Applicants for the Billington Fellowship must hold a Ph.D. awarded within the past 10 years. Preference will be given to proposed research in the fields of Russian history and culture. There is no citizenship restriction on this grant.

Prof. Devel.: Teaching Language Online Workshop (STARTALK)

STARTALK: Transitioning to Teaching Language Online (TTLO)

June 11–July 1, 2018 (3-week, online course; optional 4th week for ePortfolio work)

This STARTALK program is offered free for K-16 teachers of critical languages (Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu) who want to teach their language online. Offered completely online, this 3-week, intensive program will give teacher participants the experience of being an online learner. Course content will focus on many different facets of a successful online language program, such as creating community, time management strategies for teachers and students, choosing appropriate technology tools for communicative-based activities, and developing a variety of online activity types.

Teachers will be awarded a certificate of completion upon finishing program requirements (optional graduate credits available for a fee).

Applications are due May 14, 2018.

The Aleksanteri Institute, the Finnish Centre for Russian and Eastern European Studies at the University of Helsinki, invites international students from all countries to participate in the Helsinki Summer School course Problems of Democracy in the Eastern EU countries, on 7 – 23 August 2018. The course focuses on the current challenges of democracy and the rule of law in the Eastern members of the EU. It provides students with multidisciplinary approaches to study political and societal problems that hinder democratic conduct and undermine the common future of the European community. The course examines central issues related to governance, populism, nationalism, corruption, poverty, xenophobia, Roma population, environment and gender-related questions. The students will gain a broad overview of current societal and political developments in Eastern European EU countries.

Helsinki Summer School is a three-week academic event organised every August by the University of Helsinki, one of the world’s leading multidisciplinary, research-oriented universities renowned for its high quality teaching, research and innovation. It offers 19 courses that cover a wide range of academic fields and multidisciplinary topics. The courses are designed to challenge and inspire students in a learning environment that promotes equality.

The University of Virginia Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures seeks applicants to fill a three-year Assistant Professor position on the Academic General Faculty (tenure-ineligible) with an anticipated start date of August 25, 2018.

Subject areas of particular need include, but are not limited to: Slavic literatures, film, and cultures, folklore, and Polish language. Compensation will take the form of full-time salary with full-time benefits. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. at the time of application or be on track to receive a Ph.D. in the relevant field by May 2018. Applicants must hold the terminal degree at the time of appointment.

Candidates must have a strong, demonstrated commitment to teaching.

Funding: Academic Fellowships in Russia (American Councils)

American Councils is pleased to announce the launch of the Academic Fellowships in Russia (AFR) Program. Provided by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York, the American Councils Academic Fellowships in Russia (AFR) will support U.S. graduate students enrolled in PhD programs in the social sciences, post-doctoral fellows, university faculty, and independent scholars to conduct on-site research and fieldwork in Russia for periods of three to nine months on topics within the social science disciplines.

About the Program

Designed to expand the accessibility of Russia-based research while increasing U.S. knowledge and expertise on Russia, AFR supports contacts between U.S. fellows and their academic counterparts in Russia, provides academic affiliation at Russian institutions in support of scholar’s research objectives, and works with sponsoring institutions to provide archive access or other research support. Applicants should be prepared to consult with Russian scholars regarding research plans and objectives while in-country and to coordinate in-country travel with their host institutions. Following the completion of the research term, AFR fellows will provide a plan for the dissemination of their findings designed to strengthen and broaden current scholarship in the social sciences related to Russia and U.S.-Russian relations.

AFR Awards for 2018-2019

It is expected that 12 to 20 fellowships will be awarded for the 2018-2019 academic year, ranging from $10,000 to $45,000 each, with actual levels of support depending on the duration of the overseas research period and the academic rank of the awardee. Support includes housing and living stipends; visa support; overseas health, accident, and evacuation insurance; archive access; logistical support and economy class travel to and from the fellow’s academic home in the U.S. and the host city in Russia. Additional research-related travel (in-country) may be supported at the recommendation of the AFR Selection Committee.

Selection Criteria

AFR awardees are selected through a two-tiered peer-review process that includes scholars from the candidate’s field of specialization as well as a selection committee that is multi-disciplinary. The selection process is designed to take into account the candidate’s academic background and stage of career. All applicants are expected to specify why the period of on-site research is essential for completion of the project proposal and realistic in terms of available time and likely overseas resources. Candidates will be requested to provide evidence of Russian language proficiency sufficient to successfully carry out the project proposal. In certain cases, overseas language support may be available to successful candidates, at the direction of the AFR selection committee.
