What is Crossroads Eurasia?

Graduate Program: Interdisciplinary Joint Master’s Program in Southeast European Studies (Univ. of Belgrade and Graz)

Deadline for Applications: April 15, 2018 for University of Graz and June 1, 2018 for University of Belgrade

The University of Graz and the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Political Sciences (FPS) have announced the call for applications for the academic year 2018/2019 for the Interdisciplinary Joint Master’s Programme in Southeast European Studies (www.seestudies.eu & http://www.jointdegree.eu/en/masees/)
This two year MA program is conducted in English as a joint degree between the universities. The seventh generation commences in October 2018.
Students enroll in and spend the first year at the chosen home university (Graz or Belgrade). In the second year, students spend at least one semester on mobility at a partner university.

Study Abroad: Summer Language Program in Astana, Kazakhstan (Nazarbayev University and Uni. Arizona)

Nazarbayev University (Astana, Kazakhstan), in collaboration with the University of Arizona, has  announced their next session of the Summer School in Russian and Eurasian Studies (SSRES). They are now accepting applications from undergraduate and graduate students, as well as working professionals for the 2018 summer sessions. There are both 8-week and 5-week programs available.

Funding: Study Abroad Fellowship (American Councils)

American Councils Study Abroad is pleased to announce its new Dan E. Davidson Fellowships for language study in Russia, East Europe, Eurasia, and East Asia.  Established in honor of American Councils’ founder and President Emeritus and his four decades of leadership in the field of international education, the Dan E. Davidson Fellowship supports highly qualified and deserving individuals who demonstrate a dedication to successful international collaboration and the development of greater mutual understanding between the U.S. and countries around the world.

Beginning fall semester 2018, fellowships of up to $1,000 will be awarded for summer study, up to $4,000 for semester study and up to $8,500 for academic-year programs.  These fellowships can be used for any of the following American Councils intensive language programs:

To be eligible for the Dan E. Davidson Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Meet the requirements of their selected program;
  • Be a U.S. citizen;
  • Be enrolled in and have completed two academic years of study at an accredited college or university by the start of their program;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to becoming culturally aware citizens, contributing to a mutual understanding, and advancing successful international collaboration;
  • Demonstrate financial need.

Fall 2018 applications must be submitted by March 15, 2018

Study Abroad: Peace and Security in the Caucasus Program (American Councils)

American Councils is now accepting applications for their Peace & Security in the South Caucasus Program!

Summer 2018 program dates: June 28 – August 4, 2018

 While rich in natural resources, scenic beauty, and vibrant cultures, the South Caucasus continues to be hampered by age-old conflicts and political instability. Based in Ilia State University in Tbilisi, Georgia, this five-week summer program explores cultural identity and nationalism, development strategies, the emergence of new political systems and parties, and ongoing efforts to foster peace throughout the region.

The academic program features approximately twenty-two hours per week of in-class instruction. Content courses are designed to give participants an in-depth understanding of modern political history of the region, security issues, nationalism and identity, state-building, and democratization. As part of the academic program, participants also receive language instruction at any level in one of the regional languages, including Azeri, Chechen, Georgian, or Russian; no prior language study is required.

The program includes weekly excursions and cultural activities, housing with local host families, two meals per day, a comprehensive pre-program orientation, and visa and logistical support. Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive 8-10 credits in political science and sociology, issued through Bryn Mawr College.

Applications are due by February 15, 2018, and can be found online.

Call for Papers: Spring 2018 Issue of The Birch (Columbia U.)

The deadline for submission is 11:59pm on Saturday, February 10th, 2018.

The Birch Journal, run by Columbia University undergraduates, is the first national undergraduate journal dedicated to Eastern European, Eurasian, and Slavic studies.
You are invited to submit your essays concerning the culture and politics of the region, as well as literary criticism, creative works (short stories, memoirs, poems, translations), and artwork or photography, to be published both in print and online in our upcoming edition. If you are an undergraduate, anything you may have written for a class in the field of interest may be accepted for publication!
Submissions are being accepted until 11:59pm on Saturday, February 10th, 2018. We encourage you to get your submissions in through our website early.

The American Councils Balkan Language Initiative provides graduate students, advanced undergraduates, working professionals, and scholars intensive individualized instruction in the languages of the Balkans. Participants may choose to study one of five regional languages: 

Albanian in Tirana, Albania

Bosnian in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina

Bulgarian in Sofia, Bulgaria

Macedonian in Skopje, Macedonia

Funding: Explore the World Scholarship (HI USA)

CFP: Great Lakes Ottomanist Workshop (U. of Chicago)

Deadline for Submissions: February 19, 2018

The 15th Great Lakes Ottomanist Workshop (GLOW) will be held at the University of Chicago on March 30 & March 31, 2018. GLOW is an annual gathering of scholars based in the region who study the history, literatures, and cultures of the Ottoman Empire. This year’s workshop will launch with a lecture by Prof. Nükhet Varlık (Rutgers University) on March 30th at 4:30 pm.

Please send an abstract of no more than 200 words to glottomanworkshop2018@gmail.com by Monday, February 19th. GLOW is an excellent opportunity to share your research and works in progress with your colleagues- graduate students are especially encouraged to apply.

We encourage contributions that focus on the Ottoman city as a site of authority, violence, leisure, as well as a space for intellectual and cultural production, and inter-communal and gendered encounters. Submissions unrelated to these themes are also welcome and will be given full consideration.

Study Abroad: Central Asian Studies (SRAS)

Summer students focus on how issues of identity and ethnicity currently affect Kyrgyzstan and its diverse demographics. Students chose from two tracks: – either broadly studying culture, clan structure, history, language, art, folk crafts, and cuisine – or focusing deeply on linguistic anthropology in Kyrgyzstan. Urban/rural divides are also discussed in both options with a week-long horseback trekinto the mountains of Kyrgyzstan to directly introduce students to modern nomads and their way of life.

Central Asian Studies is for adventurous students looking to understand a militarily and economically vital part of the world where Islam and Christianity, as well as the interests of global and local groups mix and sometimes collide. You’ll gain a wider, fuller, first-hand perspective on geopolitics and societal formation for your future in government, business, or academia.
