St. Petersburg is Russia’s “cultural capital” – a grand city bursting with both classical and contemporary culture and art. St. Petersburg is also Russia’s “window on Europe” – a strategically placed city meant to open Russia, including the Russian economy, to Europe.

Home to many of Russia’s most noted authors, world famous museums and collections, and numerous theaters and concert halls, St. Petersburg is an excellent place to study the arts. This concentration of culture and history is also responsible for a significant part of the local economy in the form of tourism, both domestic and foreign. It also helps draw and retain an educated workforce, making the city very attractive to business. The very visible nature of the arts and business in St. Petersburg make it an excellent location in which to study each as well as their interactions together and with society at large.  

Society, Business, and the Arts is hosted at St. Petersburg State University of Economics, one of Russia’s leading institutions, and located in the very heart of the city. This program offers a range of electives taught in English on culture, history, politics, economics, finance, marketing, and more. Several courses focus on the intersection of these subjects: how the economy affects the arts and the role of cultural movements within society. It includes a wide cultural excusion package and a weekend trip to Moscow. You’ll gain a wider, fuller, first-hand perspective on Russia for your future career in government, business, or academia.

Diplomacy and International Relations at MGIMO
Courses in English or Russian with Eurasia’s Future Leaders

This extraordinary program at Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) is designed for upperclassmen interested in international relations, diplomacy, and/or economics. Study alongside Russia’s future political and business leaders at Eurasia’s leading institution for international studies. Enjoy an extensive selection of fascinating courses in Russian and/or English and regular opportunities to attend talks given by visiting diplomats, politicians, religious leaders, and other experts – and gain valuable insights into Russia’s foreign policy.

Courses in Russian are taken with primarily native-Russian-speaking students. Courses taken in English will be with a mix of international and Russian students. In either case, you will be taking courses that are part of B.A. or M.A. degree programs at MGIMO. Your Russian language level will determine the optimal mix of these courses and whether you should add intensive language study to your schedule.

This program is enhanced by a focused professional and cultural program. Due to the intensity of study, we include this intensive program during the orientation period, before classes start. Then, throughout the semester we schedule professional discussions and field trips to organizations focused on various aspects of Russia’s international relations and foreign policy.

Deadline for Scholarship: January 30, 2018

Students are invited to join a research trip to Arbore Commune, Suceava County, Romania, to document how modernization, especially in traditional belief, has changed rural lives.  Cultural anthropologists Professor James M. Nyce (Ball State University, retired) and Alexandra Cotofana,  ABD (IUB), will teach methods for conducting fieldwork interviews with village residents. Students should be able to arrange college credit for the three weeks (6-8 credit hours) through their home institutions.

Approximate dates:   July 19 – August 9, 2018 (3 weeks)
Start/end point:     Cluj, Romania
Team size:   5-10
Expedition languages:  English, Romanian. Local language: Romanian.

Projected fee:   $2910 – $4136, depending on the number of volunteers. Fee includes room, board, local travel, instruction and translation services. Airfare is not included.

AFRF is offering a $1,900 scholarship, applicable to any of our 2018-January 2019 expeditions  Any American citizen (18 or older) may apply, but we are especially looking for candidates who will help us to further American understanding of traditional village life.   Past scholarship recipients have included undergraduate students, graduate students, elementary school teachers, and a professional photographer.  Recipients are required to produce a paper, article, exhibit or other work about folklore or about their experience on the expedition, which we will then share with the public.
