Call for Presenters: 2017-2018 Symposium on Gender, History, and Sexuality (U. of Texas at Austin)

The Symposium on Gender, History, and Sexuality is looking for graduate students and faculty members to present their works for the fall semester. The Gender Symposium provides an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of historical approaches to gender and sexuality. We aim to build a community of scholars working together to explore the benefits and challenges of incorporating these issues into their research. Gender and sexuality are not topics that we see as narrowly defined. We therefore seek presenters who engage with a variety of subjects, methodologies, and approaches. Our goal is to explore the creative and scholarly potential of gender and sexuality as fields of inquiry.

We encourage diverse styles of presentation, including:  informal presentations about research experience and/or primary sources, workshops that focus on a work-in-progress, critical discussions of a selection of readings, and formal presentations of conference papers or dissertation chapters. Internship: Higher School of Economics in Moscow

The Faculty of Economic Sciences of the Higher School of Economics invites students to spend a semester in Moscow studying and doing unpaid internship in one of the most modern Russian University Higher School of Economics. The application deadline is September 15, 2017.

We can accommodate different types of people with various backgrounds and academic and
professional interests. We would like to find motivated interns who are ready to work to accomplish certain tasks while changing the environment around them. We need people with excellent work ethic, who are creative and hard-working, and who can inspire people around them with their innovative attitude and performance, bringing U.S. service standards to the Russian environment.

The qualities that we are looking for are:

– ability to write and edit in English
– interpersonal skills, including patience, motivation, clarity of reasoning and excellent English communication skills
– strong personal self-control and ability to handle the fast pace of life in Moscow
– genuine interest in helping others

CFP: Special Issue of “Studies in Russian, Eurasian and Central European New Media”

Issue 18: Digital Trauma in Eastern and Central Europe

Submissions are invited to a special issue on Digital Trauma in Eastern and Central Europe.

The special issue, edited by Anna Menyhért and Mykola Makhortykh, looks into the ways in which cultural and literary trauma is processed in the framework of digital memory and media studies. By analyzing how the 21st century digital environment influences both personal and collective trauma processing in local, national and trans-national communities within Europe, the issue strives to contribute to a better understanding of the link of current cultural developments to the collective traumas of the past in post-socialist countries.

The special issue derives its rationale from the ‘Trauma Studies in the Digital Age’ workshop, which was organized in Amsterdam at UvA and NIAS, in the framework of Anna Menyhért’s Marie Sklodowska-Curie project. We encourage further submissions, and suggest that those interested have a look at the project’s website, including the workshop, to have a better idea of possible themes (http://www.traprodig.humanities.uva.nl).

Funding Opportunity: Dialogues on the Experience of War

Summary

As a part of its current initiative, Standing Together: The Humanities and the Experience of War, the National Endowment for the Humanities offers the Dialogues on the Experience of War program. The program supports the study and discussion of important humanities sources about war, in the belief that these sources can help U.S. military veterans and others to think more deeply about the issues raised by war and military service. The humanities sources can be drawn from history, philosophy, literature, and film—and they may and should be supplemented by testimonials from those who have served. The discussions are intended to promote serious exploration of important questions about the nature of duty, heroism, suffering, loyalty, and patriotism.

Funding Opportunity: 2018-2019 Research Fellowships (Harry Ransom Center, U. of Texas at Austin)

Deadline for Applications: November 15, 2017

For its 2018–2019 fellowship program, the Ransom Center will award 10 dissertation fellowships and up to 50 postdoctoral fellowships for projects that require substantial on-site use of its collections. The fellowships support research in all areas of the humanities, including literature, photography, film, art, the performing arts, music, and cultural history.

One- to three-month fellowships and travel stipends are open to scholars with a Ph.D. or with a substantial record of professional achievement, demonstrated on their curriculum vitae. If the Ph.D. is in-progress at the time of application, the proposal and letters of recommendation must clearly indicate completion by June 1, 2018. Successful applicants must complete the Ph.D. by this date in order to accept the fellowship. Dissertation fellowships are open to doctoral candidates engaged in dissertation research by the time of application.

Responsible for coordinating student services for Russia and East European Institute (REEI) degrees and for coordination of broader School of Global and International Studies (SGIS) military relations. For REEI, engages in graduate advising activities and designs and implements events that provide student academic and professional development. Also, assists with REEI’s recruitment efforts, including strategy and implementation, and maintains contact with REEI’s alumni. Additionally, coordinates and expands military relations for SGIS, acting as the school’s point of contact for this growing area of interest.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in a higher education setting. Knowledge of program design and evaluation strategies; and proven ability to author and manage information for publication to various platforms, including newsletter, website, and social media. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills including ability to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals including faculty, staff, and students. Clear organizational, management and presentation skills; demonstrated computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree; previous study of one area language; experience working with the military.

Funding Opportunity: Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts (Princeton U.)

The Princeton Society of Fellows, an interdisciplinary group of scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and selected natural sciences, invites applications for the 2018-2021 Fellowship competition.

Four three-year Postdoctoral Fellowships will be awarded this year. The stipend for each of the three years of the fellowship will be approximately $86,600. In addition, fellows are provided with a shared office, a personal computer, a research account of $5,000 a year, access to university grants, benefits and other resources. Fellows are expected to reside in or near Princeton during the academic year in order to attend weekly seminars and participate fully in the intellectual life of the Society.

Funding Opportunity: Collaborative Research Fellowships (American Council of Learned Societies)

Deadline for Applications: September 27, 2017

ACLS invites applications for the tenth annual competition for ACLS Collaborative Research Fellowships, which support small teams of two or more scholars collaborating intensively on a single, substantive project in the humanities and related social sciences. The goal of the project should be a tangible research product (such as joint print or web publications) for which at least two collaborators will take credit. The program is funded by a generous grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Fellowships provide up to $60,000 in salary-replacement stipends for each collaborator to take a semester- or academic year-long supported research leave, as well as up to $21,000 in project funds, which may be used for such purposes as travel, materials, or research assistance. The total amount of a fellowship for any collaborative project will vary depending on the number of collaborators and the duration of research leaves, but the total amount of stipends may not exceed $180,000 for any one project. The fellowships are for a total period of up to 24 months, during which time project funds may be expended, to be initiated between July 1, 2018 and September 1, 2020. Collaborators’ research leaves may be taken during any semester or year within the overall award period, and leaves need not be concurrent. Academic Job: Open-Rank Position in Russian Literature (UCLA)

The UCLA Department of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Languages and Cultures invites applications for an open-rank position (tenure-track or with tenure) in Russian literature, with the hire date of July 1, 2018. We are looking for applicants with Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, possessing native or near-native fluency in Russian and English. Our focus is on candidates with a specialization in Russian literature of the Golden Age (roughly the 1790s to the 1840s), coupled with competencies and research interests in areas of interdisciplinary focus within UCLA’s Humanities Division, particularly digital, urban, environmental and medical humanities. Dynamic teaching skills are essential; responsibilities include graduate and undergraduate courses, dissertation supervision, independent studies courses and sharing in departmental administration.
