The Canadian Association of Slavists/Taylor and Francis Book Prize in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies

The Canadian Association of Slavists’ Taylor and Francis Book Prize was established in 2014 and is sponsored by Taylor and Francis Publishers. It is awarded annually for the best academic book in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies published in the previous calendar year by a Canadian author (citizen or permanent resident).

The book prize jury consists of three members chosen by the CAS executive.

Nominations for the 2017 Book Prize competition are to be postmarked by or on 19 May 2017.  Please note that one member of the jury would prefer to receive electronic versions of the submissions.

The prize winner will be announced in an e-mail to CAS members and on the CAS/CSP website in September 2017. The winner receives a cash award of $250 CAD and recognition at the annual conference of the Canadian Association of Slavists. Description: Support is primarily provided for the historical humanities, in particular to support research projects in the fields of Archaeology, Art History, Historical Islamic Studies, History of Law, History of Science, Prehistory, and Early History. Applications for research scholarships can be made directly by Postdocs or scholars with Post Doctoral Lecture Qualification. A research scholarship is usually applied for by one scholar who will work on a specific project on his or her own. The simultaneous receipt of salary or retirement pension and a research scholarship is not possible. The period of support for Foundation stipend holders working on Ph.D. or research projects can be extended by up to 12 months if the holder becomes a parent during the period covered by the stipend and has an entitlement to maternity or parental leave. Description: The Kennan Institute seeks applications from scholars who have received their Ph.D. within the past 10 years for the newly established Billington Fellowship to conduct research on Russian history and culture. The Billington Fellowship was established in 2016 in tribute to the co-founder of the Kennan Institute, Director Emeritus of the Wilson Center, and Librarian Emeritus of Congress, James H. Billington. The Billington Fellow will be based at the Wilson Center’s Kennan Institute in Washington, D.C. for a nine-month term (one academic year). Fellows will receive access to the Library of Congress, National Archives, and policy research centers in Washington, D.C., as well as the opportunity to meet with key experts and officials at the State Department, USAID, Department of Defense, and Congress. Funding Opportunity: U.S. – Russia Peer-to-Peer Program (U.S. Dept. of State)

The 2017 competition for the U.S.-Russia Peer-to-Peer Dialogue Program is now open.   The application deadline is 18:00 Moscow time (11:00 EDT), Thursday, June 1, 2017.

The U.S. Department of State announces the next round of competition for the U.S.-Russia Peer-to-Peer Dialogue Program, which provides grants of up to $100,000 to support unique projects centered on Russian-American, peer-to-peer collaboration, including an exchange of best practices on a topic of mutual interest.  The purpose of the program is to foster greater contacts between Americans and Russians.

In the proposal, applicant organizations must clearly demonstrate collaboration with a peer organization in the other country.  Projects must be non-political in nature and focus on Russian-American peer-to-peer dialogue or people-to-people engagement on themes of mutual interest.  Applicants are encouraged to incorporate innovative methodologies to accomplish program goals and foster interaction among peers.  Successful projects will result in a product or outcome which enhances interaction and understanding between our two societies.

Two-Year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Slavic Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Florida State University

The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Florida State University invites applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Slavic Languages, Literatures and Cultures beginning August 7, 2017. The postdoctoral fellow is responsible for teaching courses that contribute to the Slavic Program’s curriculum and maintaining an active research program. The teaching load will be 2 courses per semester and will include one repeatable large-enrollment course and one graduate seminar in the spring semester on a topic of the applicant’s choosing.

Special consideration will be given to candidates with interdisciplinary research programs and those who propose a graduate seminar that aims to serve graduate students across the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics and humanities or social science disciplines (these may include, but are not limited to, digital humanities, film studies, translation studies, philosophy, linguistics, anthropology, and history).

Postdoctoral fellows are expected to participate in the intellectual life of the Department, whose programs, curriculum, and events bring together faculty from multiple disciplines. In their letter of application, applicants should include a brief research statement that describes the specific projects to be undertaken during the fellowship period.

Eligibility is restricted to applicants who received the Ph.D. between July 31, 2014 and June 30, 2017 and do not hold concurrent employment at another institution.

Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. on April 21, 2017 and include: 1) a letter of application; 2) C.V. ; 3) a syllabus for a graduate seminar on a topic of the applicant’s choosing; 4) three letters of recommendation.

Study Abroad: Russian Language & Lit. in Riga, Latvia (CUNY)

The Division of Russian and Slavic Studies at Hunter College (CUNY) is offering a new two-track study abroad program in Russian language and literature in the Baltics (June 4 – July 31, 2017)! The application deadline is April 6.

We will be based in Riga, but the program includes a 4-day trip to Lithuania (Kaunas, Vilnius, Klaipeda, Palanga) and a 2-day trip to Estonia (Tartu and Tallinn).

The language track is an intensive Intermediate Russian course, with a prerequisite of 2 semesters of Russian taken previously.

The literature track is a course taught in English, but with the option of doing most readings in Russian, titled “THE BALTIC TRANSIT: RUSSIAN WRITERS EN ROUTE TO THE WEST.” It explores the roles of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in Russian literature and culture throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, beginning with the period of the three states’ interwar independence, covering the years of WWII and the Soviet period, as well as addressing the post-Soviet times and the present-day cultural and political moment.
