Content-Based Teaching of Russian

Do you teach content in Russian as a foreign, second, or heritage language? Please consider submitting a proposal for the edited volume Content-Based Teaching of Russian in the Routledge series on Russian language pedagogy and research    

We would like to hear from various fields and backgrounds of Russian language instruction. Language of publication: English; 3,000 to 8,000 words + references and appendices.

We are equally interested in theory-heavy explorations, research, and submissions that focus on teaching practice. International participation is especially encouraged.

CFP: Wisconsin Slavic Conference

Abstracts for 20-minute papers on any aspect of Slavic literatures, cultures (including film, music, and the visual arts), linguistics, and history are invited for the annual Wisconsin Slavic Conference. Comparative topics and interdisciplinary approaches are welcome and encouraged. The conference will be held in-person at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Friday and Saturday, March 24 and 25, 2023.

This year’s keynote lecture will be delivered by Professor Yuliya Ilchuk (Stanford University).

2023 National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest (NPSREC)

Deadline: February 26, 2023

This contest, established in 1999 by ACTR, has become a signature Russian language contest for post-secondary students around the country. ​Students taking Russian in accredited colleges and universities are invited to participate in the annual National Post-Secondary Russian Essay Contest sponsored by the American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR). 

Who can register?

  • Instructors at any post-secondary institution can register students enrolled in Russian language courses. 
  • At least one instructor per participation institution must be a current ACTR member.

How much does it cost?

  • $5.00 per student.

​What are the deadlines?

  • January 15: First day to register
  • February 6: Essay topic will be announced via email to institutions with registered students. If you register students after this date, you will receive the email within one business day of registering students.
  • February 7: First day to administer the essay contest
  • February 8: First day to upload essays
  • February 20: Last day to register students
  • February 24: Last day to administer essay contest
  • February 26: Last day to upload essays and pay fees
  • April 15-20: Results posted
  • April 30: Physical certificates will be mailed to those who request it.

If you answered yes, then you could apply for – and win! – up to $10,000 through the 2023 Citizen Diplomacy Action Fund for U.S. Alumni. The competition provides small grants to teams of two or more U.S. government-sponsored exchange alumni to carry out public service projects related to one of the following five themes:

Prof. Dev: Municipal Environmental Resilience and Inclusiveness

Program Information

The Alumni Thematic International Exchange Seminar (Alumni TIES) program will convene 40 alumni of U.S. government-sponsored exchange programs in Santiago, Chile on May 22-26, 2023 on the theme of “Municipal Environmental Resilience and Inclusiveness.” This seminar is for ExchangeAlumni, over the age of 18, from countries in the Americas. 

This seminar will feature thematic breakout sessions, interactive panel discussions, and engagement with prominent organizations working on the intersection of the environment and socio-ecological resilience against climate change. 

Seminar activities will begin with a welcome reception in the evening of Monday, May 22, and end with a closing dinner on Thursday, May 25. May 21 (in some cases), May 22, and May 26 will be travel days.

Selected participants will focus on the following priorities:

  • Learn how to apply a multi-sectoral approach for building climate resilience by strengthening the capacity of communities in the Americas to address the challenges of climate change including water, food, and economic security.
  • Better prepare for and respond to the ways that climate change undermines economic growth, public health, and safety in marginalized communities and vulnerable populations.
  • Collaborate and create ideas to build green infrastructure and transition to renewable energy with the support of community members.
  • Strategize creative ways to reengage community stakeholders, elected officials, technology companies, and educators in the development of sustainable environmental practices with indigenous and local knowledge.
  • Apply for small grants that focus on topics related to socio-ecological resilience against climate change, participatory decisionmaking in climate change adaptation practices, and access to green energy for marginalized populations.

Participants will have the exclusive opportunity to design and collaborate on regional proposals for community-based projects of up to $10,000 USD.

In advance of the seminar, selected participants will meet for virtual, pre-seminar meetings during the week of April 10-14, 2023.

Provides services and deals with materials that are non-technical in nature, of limited technical complexity, or easily acquired. Coordinates proper purchasing information, correct bibliographic identification, and correct coding in the information system. Contacts dealers, subscription agents, vendors, overseas offices, government agencies, and/or exchange partners to coordinate the ordering process. Consults acquisition reference material to determine whether recommended item is appropriate for purchase, copyright claim, exchange, gift, loan, or other type of acquisition. Examines recommendations for acquisition to identify processing and custodial requirements and to identify acquisition of out-of-scope materials. Maintains liaison with recommending officials and subject specialists to understand their needs. Consults acquisition reference material to determine whether recommended item is appropriate for purchase. Reviews and approves invoices for payment for all formats of material. Determines availability of funds.

Acad. Job: Lecturer of Russian, Pushkin Summer Institute at UW-Madison

The Pushkin Summer Institute (PSI) is a five-week residential, precollege enrichment program held at University of Wisconsin-Madison for rising high-school juniors and seniors. The goals of the project are to build and improve students’ Russian language abilities; to build critical thinking, reading, and writing skills; to stimulate student interest in Russia and Russian studies; to prepare students for the demands of college life; to expose students to the opportunities UW-Madison and the Madison community have to offer.

Pending final approval of external funding, the Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia (CREECA) seeks to hire two, full-time PSI lecturers for summer 2023. PSI lecturers will be responsible for participating in orientation activities as well as instructor meetings throughout the six-week program. The six-week contract (June 11, 2023-July 22, 2023) includes one week of training and orientation (held virtually, June 12-16, 2023) and five weeks of instruction (in-person: June 19-July 21, 2023). Under the supervision of the PSI On-Site Director, PSI lecturers will
1. Teach a non-credit Russian course for high school students. Classes meet Monday-Friday, 8:50 -10:45 am and 12:05-2:10 pm. Full-time instructors (1.0 FTE) will teach both morning and afternoon.
2. Prepare syllabus, lesson plans, and teaching materials; prepare, administer, and grade classroom and homework assignments and exams; and hold office hours.
3. Participate in weekly all-staff meetings and all sessions of pedagogy workshops organized by PSI.
4. Lead at least two Russian cultural event during the program and participate in educational co-curricular events.
5. Hold one office hour for students per week.

Job Posting: Program Assistant, Critical Language Scholarship Program

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight weeks abroad studying one of fourteen critical languages: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish or Urdu. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

The position will require close attention to detail, the ability to handle multiple tasks and work independently, and a readiness to communicate with diverse groups of people. The Program Assistant will work closely with a dedicated team of CLS staff members and report to the CLS Program Manager.

Job Posting: 3rd Year Russian Instructor, Project GO – University of Pittsburgh

The Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies invites applications for the position of 3rd-year Russian Instructor for the 2023 Project GO study abroad program in Narva, Estonia. Appointed for the Summer Term 2023, the Instructor will be chiefly responsible for teaching the ROTC 3rd-year Russian course, while working with the 2nd and 4th-year Russian instructors to integrate the language curriculum across levels. Other responsibilities will include: collaboration with Narva College on the design and implementation of cultural programs; coordinating classes with the content to be covered during lectures and excursions; preparing 3rd-year Russian students for all program-related excursions and lectures; conversing with students in the target language at all times; and assistance with the administration of required language proficiency exams.
