Prof. Dev: American Councils 2023 Summer Russian Language Teacher Professional Development Program and Fellowship

American Councils and ACTR are pleased to announce the 2023 Summer Russian Language Teacher Professional Development Program and Fellowship Opportunity at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) in Almaty, Kazakhstan. We kindly ask your assistance in drawing this opportunity to the attention of potentially interested colleagues. Please note that this opportunity is also open to current graduate students who intend to pursue a career in Russian pedagogy.

Fifteen (15) U.S. teachers will be accepted and funded for participation in the 2023 program, which will consist of small group work, individual tutorials, and seminars based on a curriculum which emphasizes four-skill communication in contemporary Russian, clarity and confidence of teacher self-expression, advanced grammar in context, and an expanded understanding of the diverse peoples and cultures that make up the Russian-speaking world today.

The ACTR Board has recommended a priority in 2023 for in-service K-12 teachers and university-level instructors or teaching fellows holding a teaching appointment for AY 2023-24. Applications from teachers serving historically under-represented US populations are particularly encouraged.

The war amplified uneasy discussions in the region regarding geopolitical allegiances. Hundreds of thousands of migrants flocking to Armenia and Georgia created new challenges to the fragile economies of these countries, as well as potential opportunities. While the situation between Armenia and Azerbaijan remains tense, the region enters yet another potentially turbulent year.

Acad. Job: Teaching Professor in Russian Language and Russian, East European and Eurasian Culture

The University of Colorado is accepting applications for a Teaching Professor in Russian Language and Russian, East European and Eurasian Culture. This is a three-academic-year, full-time (100%), non-tenure track position, with the possibility of renewal. The position begins fall 2023. Teaching responsibilities include all levels of Russian language as well as courses in Russian, East European, and/or Eurasian culture in English and Russian (current need is 5-6 courses in Russian language and 0-1 course in Russian, East European and/or Eurasian culture per year). Teaching load is three courses per semester. Salary $54,000 – $56,000; professional development and relocation funds may be available to the final candidate. Required qualifications: Native or near-native proficiency in Russian and English; MA degree or equivalent in Russian, East European and/or Eurasian Studies, Russian Linguistics, or a closely related field; at least 1 year college-level language teaching experience (experience teaching can be gained during graduate studies); familiarity with current language pedagogy and the ACTFL guidelines. Preferred qualifications: PhD or equivalent in Russian, East European and/or Eurasian Studies, Russian Linguistics, or a closely related field; evidence of professional activity (conference presentations, workshops, or publications) in a field related to teaching responsibilities. CFP: Studies in Russian and Soviet Cinema Special Issue with Kultura Ukrainy

Studies in Russian and Soviet Cinema is preparing a special issue together with Kul´tura Ukrainy/Culture of Ukraine on the topic of the History of Ukrainian Cinema/Cinema and Ukrainian History, under the joint editorship of Leonid Machulin (editor of Kul´tura Ukrainy) and Jeremy Hicks (guest editor of the special issue). The issue will be published in Ukrainian in Kul´tura Ukrainy and in English in Studies in Russian and Soviet Cinema (under the overall editorship of Birgit Beumers) and comprise articles both from scholars writing primarily in Ukrainian and those writing in English.

Studies in Russian and Soviet Cinema has long been a forum for debates over Ukrainian film history, published many articles by Ukrainian scholars, including prominent film scholar and member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, Serhii Trymbach, and about Ukrainian cinema. Through the publication of this issue, the editors wish to draw attention to the distinct and rich history of Ukrainian cinema, and encourage shared reflection on it by the Ukrainian and wider scholarly communities.

“AREI: Journal for Central and Eastern European History and Politics” (http://temp.arei-journal.pl/articles/static/44) is now inviting paper proposals for its thematic issue entitled “(Not) Ours: Jews of Central and Eastern Europe and their neighbors”. While the journal is published in English, we also welcome submissions in Polish, Ukrainian, Belarussian, Russian, and Hebrew. Authors are provided with a translation of their papers and with an honorary of 2000 PLN.

Please submit your abstract by February 28 and a draft of your paper by April 30 to the issue editors, Anna Wylegała and Magdalena Semczyszyn: annawylegala@gmail.com, magdalena.semczyszyn@gmail.com. The thematic issue is planned to be published by the end of 2023.

Home Front Studies is calling for article submissions. Published by the University of Nebraska Press, this interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal explores the concept of the home front, broadly considered, in times of war, civil war, and similar conflicts from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Its interests include the roles of art, discrimination, finance, gender, identity, literature, music, morale, propaganda, race, and/or sexuality as experienced by civilians on home fronts in locations around the world. Its interdisciplinary editorial board is open to submissions from across the humanities.

All submissions must be original, unpublished, and not under review elsewhere. HFS welcomes manuscripts of up to 9,000 words, inclusive of endnotes. Prepare contributions in accordance with the most recent edition of the Chicago Manual of Style, using humanities-style endnote citations.

Responsibilities for this position include the following:

Independently collaborates and engages with Director with all phases of producing publications.
Conducts independent and team-based scholarly research and policy analysis on various programmatic initiatives.
Fundraising and grant reporting duties: identifies funding opportunities and prepares grant applications; coordinates new grants as assigned; and prepares grant reports and other materials requested by funders.
Provides financial oversight support to Director to include budget preparation and review.
Leads Program internship program, to include review and selection of applicants and supervision of hired interns.
Advises on creation of programmatic strategic plan; leads on executing this plan in accordance to established timelines set by the Program Director.
Oversees all scholars-in-residence (Title VIII, WWC, Public Policy Fellows, George F. Kennan Fellows) and ensures implementation of research and strategic plans.
Maintains liaison with local, national, and international organizations related to the advancement of Russian, Ukrainian, and Eurasian studies.
Brings knowledge of current academic, government, and private organizations concerned with post-Soviet studies.

Resident Director, Russian Overseas Flagship Program 2023 (paycomonline.net)

The Russian Overseas Flagship (ROF) program, located in Almaty, Kazakhstan, assists learners of Russian to reach Superior or higher levels of proficiency. The Overseas Flagship program consists of intensive, structured language instruction; direct enrollment in relevant courses at the host institution; internships; and homestay boarding with native speakers of the target language.

The Overseas Flagship Program Resident Director serves as American Councils’ representative in Almaty in the areas of participants’ health, safety, and program logistics. He/she must be available to program participants on a daily basis, observe classes regularly, meet with administrators and students, help students attend medical appointments, arrange group travel and cultural programs, maintain the office and student lounge, coordinate with local program assistants and with AC representatives at regional offices, and perform other tasks. The Resident Director must be available to participants during any emergencies that arise and must communicate regularly with host institution representatives in Kazakhstan and American Councils staff in Washington, DC. The Resident Director attends American Councils pre-departure orientation programs in Washington, DC, travels to Kazakhstan with the student group at the beginning of the program and returns to Washington, DC with the group at the end of the program. The Resident Director reports to the ROF Program Manager in Washington, DC.

EMPLOYMENT DATES: As soon as June 1, 2023 and not later than Aug.1, 2023, until May 31, 2024, with possible continuation into the following academic year.
