Seeking Interpreters
Refugee Services of Texas is seeking interpreters as the Ukrainian refugees are beginning to arrive. They are recruiting primarily Ukrainian and Russian speakers, but are also open to other Slavic languages. It is a paid position of $25 an hour as needed. Interpreters would be in charge of their own schedule.

The Kennan Institute seeks to improve understanding and analysis of Russia, Ukraine, and the post-Soviet space by promoting original research, encouraging public discussion, and enhancing policymaking in the United States and the region. The Kennan Institute maintains an ongoing focus on U.S. – Russian relations, legal reform, global trade, , foreign policy and international relations.

The Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) of the Office of General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Commerce is seeking a person with exceptional analytical,
organizational and interpersonal communication skills to join our outstanding team of
international technical assistance attorneys. CLDP’s mission is commercial legal reform:
CLDP helps developing countries improve the policy, legal, and regulatory conditions for
doing sustainable business, thereby creating better economic opportunities for local
entrepreneurs and American companies doing business overseas. CLDP provides training,
advisory, and consultative services to host country governments.
The Program Officer is part of a team that delivers the Tajikistan Secondary Schools English Teacher Professional Development Program (TSSET) program in Tajikistan, funded for 18 months by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe. Based in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, Program Officer is responsible for administration, monitoring, and reporting for the nationwide initiative that aims to improve the teaching of English in schools, with emphasis on the secondary level. A three-tiered training and mentorship initiative will target trainers who will receive tailored English training (Tier 1), regional peer mentor teachers (Tier 2) and English teachers in all 4 regions of the country, in the primary cities and in remote areas. The program aims to build greater confidence for English as a Foreign Language teachers, and engage them actively as members of a valued and appreciated English Teaching Corps.
The position reports to the Program Manager who is also based in Dushanbe. The Program Officer supervises day-to-day work of a Program Assistant, and will work with partners and key providers engaged in the project, to include George Mason University, English Without Borders, the Institutes Professional Development, and the Tajikistan Teachers of English Association, as well as with the Ministry of Education and Sciences of Tajikistan, as relates to pre-service teacher training, and with organizations administering complementary projects funded by other donors. As a member of the overall American Councils team in Tajikistan, the Program Officer will also work under the local supervision of the Country Director and Executive Director for Tajikistan, and with a talented team of professional implementing other projects in the sphere of education. A Regional Director in Almaty, Kazakhstan also supports work in the region.

The conference committee invites proposals for papers on all topics related to the Slavic, East European, and Eurasian world, particularly those related to the theme of displacement and diaspora. As war and other disasters continue in these regions, this theme will explore how war has displaced and damaged cultures, cultural artifacts, and cultural production. It will also provide students and scholars with the opportunity to think about how these horrors prompt cultures, societies, and languages to flourish and thrive while also creating new centers and pulls across the globe when citizens are forced to flee.
The conference will open on Friday with a reception by Dr. Valeria Sobol (U. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign). Building on the keynote address, a plenary panel will follow on Saturday morning Panels by conference participants will then commence on Saturday and Sunday. This year’s conference will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Society for Slovene Studies.

Language and War: Sociolinguistic Shifts in the Ukrainian Language Situation in the World

Scopes of the Issue. The main aim of this Special Issue is to bring attention to the sociolinguistic changes that the war in Ukraine is triggering in its linguistic situation in both homeland and worldwide. The objective of the Issue is to report on ongoing developments in the use of the two major languages of Ukraine, Ukrainian and Russian, and in attitudes towards their functional and symbolic value, both among the Ukrainian population and in the diaspora. It is of particular interest for this Issue to report on the changes that are taking place in the perception of the linguistic situation in Ukraine around the World. One of the purposes of the Issue is to report on the initiatives of language revitalization and support that are emerging in different countries around the world in response to the wave of displacement of Ukrainian population.
