Deadline to submit information: First Monday in October
Advanced doctoral students (usually in the second or third year) planning for the primary research year in the subsequent year, who wish to be considered for nomination by the department for grants (such as University Continuing Fellowship, Kress, CASVA, and others requiring departmental nomination), submit the following information electronically to the Scholarship chair:
- one-page abstract describing the dissertation project and research and travel needs (libraries, archives, museums, etc.)
- list of grants requiring departmental nomination for which you wish to be considered
- list of grants requiring no nomination for which you are applying separately
Students who are not successful in the competition for such outside grants should submit an application for the departmental Spring Research and Travel Competition for backup funding.
A list of fellowships is as follows:
University Continuing Fellowship
Belgian American Foundation (Study in Belgium)
2-3 fellowships in any ARH field pertaining to Belgian art
Dedalus Fellowship (must be in doctoral candidacy to be nominated)
Eleanor Tufts (2 years at SMU) Applications accepted on alternate years
Walter Read Hovey Memorial Fund Award (Pittsburgh Foundation)
Fulbright Fellowships (screened by UT)
International Office, Dept. of Education
Samuel H. Kress Foundation Institutional Fellowship
Liebmann Fellowship (through the Office of Graduate Studies, women only)
Menil Foundation (for Modernists – department issues call for applications)
Metropolitan Museum of Art (most self nominations; a few require departmental nomination)
National Gallery of Art (various fellowships)
Smithsonian Institution (various fellowships)
Carter Manny Fellowship (architecture)
