The Center for Global Studies, International and Area Studies Library, & Russian, East European and Eurasian Center at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign are pleased to announce fellowships and research honoraria to support the internationalization of community colleges nationwide. We invite applications from faculty, librarians, and administrators interested in expanding global studies curricula, instruction in less commonly taught lanugages, library collections, or international education programs at their home institutions. Participation in the ISRL provides resources and time for research otherwise unavailable to applicants. Fellows will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with international and area studies librarians and explore the unlimited print and online resources of the University Library at Illinois.

Funding

International Studies Fellowships

The Center for Global Studies provides housing for applicants coming from outside the Champaign-Urbana area. Fellows will be provided up to 7 days paid housing and up to 8 days paid parking at Presby Hall in a shared three-bedroom two-bathroom suite.

Research Honorarium

As part of the application, participants are expected to turn in a research or program plan. While in residence at Illinois, all participants are expected to build on this plan and produce a syllabus for a new or updated course, a white paper, a library collection development plan, or a plan for new international education programs. A $1,000 honorarium is available, contingent upon receipt of these new or revised materials by November 1, 2017. CESSI is now accepting rolling applications for remaining Title VIII funds. Apply as soon as possible!

UW-Madison is now accepting applications from students wishing to take intensive elementary or intermediate Kazakh, Tajik, Uyghur, or Uzbek in summer 2017. If you are interested in taking a Central Eurasian language not on this list, please contact the CESSI Program Coordinator at cessi@creeca.wisc.edu.

Tuition and Fees

The cost of the CESSI 2017 8-week program is $4,800*. This includes the cost of UW-Madison assessments for use of campus facilities (student services, recreational facilities, etc.). The fee does not include the cost of textbooks or living expenses.

* Exception: UW-Madison undergraduates who are classified as resident or Minnesota reciprocity for tuition purposes follow regular UW-Madison summer 2017 fee schedules.

Housing, Books, and Incidentals

The cost of required textbooks will vary between the different languages offered at CESSI, but students should plan to spend roughly $200 for textbooks. Summer housing and food costs can vary greatly in the Madison campus area, but a frugal student could safely budget $2,000 for housing and meal costs for the summer.

Internship: Educational Center “Cosmopolitan” (Russia)

Educational Center “Cosmopolitan”, Novosibirsk, Russia, is pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for the summer internship programs that we shall run in Novosibirsk and in the Altai Mountains area. Please inform your students and colleagues about these excellent opportunities that are not to be missed.

We offer Summer Internships at the children’s camps that we shall run from mid-June until early August in the beautiful Altai Mountains and in the delightful countryside just outside Novosibirsk. Tours of Novosibirsk and trips to the beautiful Siberian towns of Tomsk, Irkutsk and to magnificent Lake Baikal will be organized between the camp sessions.

These internship positions are open to university students. No previous teaching experience, no previous knowledge of Russian is required. Participating in our internship program, your students will gain valuable skills and experience for their future profession while being immersed in the Russian culture and having intensive practice in the Russian language.

Academic Job: Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Russian Language, Literature, and Culture (Oberlin College)

Job Summary

The Department of Russian Language, Literature, and Culture at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time non-continuing faculty position as a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the College of Arts and Sciences. Appointment to this position will be for a term of two years beginning the fall semester of 2017 and will carry the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian. The position is supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and by a challenge grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Area of specialization is open, but we seek a creative scholar and teacher who has strong interdisciplinary interests and can work across different periods and genres. The ability to connect the Russian tradition with other literary and cultural traditions is a plus.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will offer one course each semester. Teaching duties over two years will entail a mix of language courses at the introductory, intermediate or advanced level and literature courses in translation or in Russian.

Description: The Smith Richardson Foundation sponsors an annual Strategy and Policy Fellows grant competition to support young scholars and policy thinkers on American foreign policy, international relations, international security, military policy, and diplomatic and military history. The purpose of the program is to strengthen the U.S. community of scholars and researchers conducting policy analysis in these fields. The Foundation will award at least three research grants of $60,000 each to enable the recipients to research and write a book. Within the academic community, this program supports junior or adjunct faculty, research associates, and post-docs who are engaged in policy-relevant research and writing. Within the think tank community, the program supports members of the rising generation of policy thinkers who are focused on U.S. strategic and foreign policy issues.
