February 13, 2017: FLAS application deadline. More about FLAS.

Tuition and Fees

The cost of the CESSI 2017 8-week program is $4,800*. This includes the cost of UW-Madison assessments for use of campus facilities (student services, recreational facilities, etc.). The fee does not include the cost of textbooks or living expenses.

* Exception: UW-Madison undergraduates who are classified as resident or Minnesota reciprocity for tuition purposes follow regular UW-Madison summer 2017 fee schedules.

Housing, Books, and Incidentals

The cost of required textbooks will vary between the different languages offered at CESSI, but students should plan to spend roughly $200 for textbooks. Summer housing and food costs can vary greatly in the Madison campus area, but a frugal student could safely budget $2,000 for housing and meal costs for the summer.

Please see our Housing page for more information on housing options in Madison for summer 2017, and also the Financial Support section below for additional funding opportunities at CESSI.

Financial Support

It is our goal to make CESSI as affordable as possible. CESSI offers multiple funding options for applicants.

New for 2017: CESSI will provide 10 Title VIII Fellowships to graduate students, researchers, and professionals who are U.S. citizens studying a Central Eurasian language at CESSI. More information can be found on the CESSI 2017 Application Form.

CESSI FLAS: Graduate students (all levels) and undergraduate students (intermediate- and advanced-level Central Eurasian languages only) whose home institution is eligible to award FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Summer Fellowships are encouraged to apply first to their home institution. A limited number of FLAS awards may be available for UW-Madison and special students for CESSI 2017. Applications for Summer 2017 FLAS Fellowships will be due in mid-February. For information on the FLAS Fellowship, please visit the FLAS webpage.

CESSI Fee Remission (Scholarship): Available to all applicants. Pending confirmation of funding, we anticipate being able to award several fee remissions to qualified applicants.

In addition to these funding options, we encourage both undergraduate and graduate students to consult with their home department and home university’s office of financial aid for any funding they might offer.
