CFP: “Contemporary Poetic Practices”

Deadline: February 1, 2021

The Department of the History of Contemporary Russian Literature of the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU) invites participants in its international conference “Contemporary Poetic Practices”. The event will take place on February 18-20 in Zoom with the participation of the Poetry Library project. Conference topics: history, theory and methodology of studying the forms of existence of poetry.

At the beginning of the 21st century, poets present their texts to the public in many different ways: through personal websites, video recordings, readings on various literary platforms, and finally through social networks. Many of these practices of public representation existed in the pre-Internet era, but were preliminary in relation to paper publications (for example, publishing a poetry collection of authors).
Today the role of such practices in the public representation of the contemporary poet is changing. Increasingly, the question of the importance and necessity of a poetry book is being discussed, and the answer to it depends on many factors. New ways of distributing audiovisual content have changed the status of reading by author, transforming the role of performative poetry practices and increasing their importance. At the same time, poetry is mastering digital spaces not only as spaces for the transmission of finished content, but also as material involved in the creative process. This is how a variety of digital poetry practices emerge.
Media transformations of poetic practices change the orders of interactions within poetic communities, the ways of their hierarchization and their characteristic rituals of recognition. These processes of transformation of modern poetic practices are successfully recorded and described by researchers of modern poetry. Our conference is an attempt to consolidate the efforts of researchers and poets to comprehend and study the above-mentioned practices.

The conference will address the following issues:
-poetic event and modes of publicity: approaches to researching study stadium, salon, kitchen and “café” poetry
-author’s reading as an object of historical and literary reconstruction and empirical research
-author’s poetry collection in the life of poetry communities and the poet’s biography: history, sociology, methodology
-a book in the space of performative poetic practices – from the avant-garde to the present day
-“poetry night” as an object of study: history, typology, anthropology
-poetry and “digital”: new forms and perspectives of interaction

To participate in the conference, please send abstracts up to 2000 characters to ev2905@yandex.ru (Evgenia Vezhlyan) before February 1, 2021.
