About the Position:

The Stanford Libraries’ Art and Architecture are at the forefront in providing innovative support for scholarship, teaching, and learning in the various subdisciplines in art, art practice, and architecture as practiced at Stanford. The collections in the Bowes Art and Architecture comprise one of the most significant research collections anywhere.

The Head Librarian of the Bowes Art and Architecture Library provides a full range of high-quality library services for the faculty and students of the Department of Art and Art History and to other interested faculty, students, and staff of the University.  The Head Librarian is also a member of the management team responsible for humanities and area studies collections in the Stanford University Libraries.  In addition to advanced subject expertise in Art and Art History, the Head Librarian must have proven managerial ability and be capable of contributing to the programs and projects of the Libraries in general as well as to the University.

Core Duties:

  • Plans, develops, and manages programs of the Art and Architecture Library and its collections within the framework of the University Libraries’ policies and the needs of the faculty and students.
  • Manages and evaluates the staff of the Art and Architecture Library and its Visual Resources Center.
  • Oversees and manages the budget of the Art and Architecture Library and the Visual Resources Center.
  • Selects materials in coordination with the Art Bibliographer for the Stanford University Libraries. Evaluates archive collections for acquisition, making dealer and site visits. Participates in all aspects of collection management, including evaluation of gifts, donor stewardship, book dealer relations, and ongoing Bowes collection evaluations to select material for relegation to offsite storage.
  • Maintains close contact with the faculty to coordinate their research and instructional needs with library and archival resources and programs.
  • Oversees and contributes to reference, research assistance, and bibliographic instruction in Art and Art History and participates in the Stanford University Libraries programs of bibliographic instruction.
  • Works with the Preservation Department to establish policies and practices to preserve materials for the long-term.  In coordination with the Art Bibliographer, directs preservation and conservation assessment of Art Locked Stacks acquisitions.
  • Promotes the use of Stanford University Libraries’ collections and resources through a range of in-person and online outreach activities.
  • Stays abreast of current developments in art librarianship through active participation in appropriate professional organizations.
  • Represents the Art and Architecture Library in the Heads of Public Services group and contributes to that group’s planning, policy, and process.  Serves on Library committees and manages library projects as appropriate or assigned.
  • Participates in development activities in support of the Libraries, including fundraising and grant writing. Encourages and cultivates close relations with donors of funds and materials relating to art and architecture collections

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:

For consideration at the Librarian 3 level:

PhD in art history, art practice, architecture or related field or advanced degree in Library Science and advanced degree in art history, art practice, architecture or related field with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and five years of experience in a relevant library setting or similar organization with evidence of capacity to work at a high level of responsibility or a combination of education and relevant experience.

For consideration at the Librarian 4 level:

PhD in art history, art practice, architecture or related field or advanced degree in Library Science and advanced degree in art history, art practice, architecture or related field with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and ten years of experience in a relevant library setting or similar organization, demonstrating a high level of expertise and active engagement in their area of specialization at a national level or a combination of education and relevant experience.
