The North East Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (NESEEES) Executive Board invites proposals for individual papers and complete panels for the 43th annual NESEEES conference.
The conference will be held virtually on Saturday, April 30th, 2022. Details on the conference format and procedures will be provided to registered participants. The registration fee will be waived this year due to the online format.
Scholarly papers and panels are welcome on any aspect of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies. Proposals for complete panels of thematically related papers are strongly encouraged. Recommendations for discussants and chairs are not required for panel proposals but are invited and will be taken into consideration.
Proposals must include the following:Title and a one-paragraph abstract Technology requirements Presenter’s email address Presenter’s institutional affiliation and professional status (professor, graduate student, etc.) The name and contact information for the panel organizer, where applicable.
Proposals may be submitted directly by graduate students enrolled in related programs as well as by independent scholars with academic credentials and by faculty members of all ranks. Proposals may be submitted on behalf of undergraduate students by faculty mentors supervising their projects.

We strongly urge professionals in the field to volunteer to serve as chairs and/or discussants. Those wishing to volunteer may do so using the space provided on the proposal submission Form.
Graduate Student Essay Competition
NESEEES awards an annual prize for the best graduate student paper presented at the conference. The selection committee may award a second-place prize when appropriate.
Essays are judged based on the quality of the following elements:A research question presenting the problem to be investigated A methodological framework outlining the scholar’s approach to the topic A clearly articulated argument Evidence presented in support of the argument Readiness for publication: English usage, readability and style The importance of the research to the profession
Following the conference, a deadline will be announced by which graduate students should submit revised papers to the competition. Visual materials accompanying the presentation at the Conference may be submitted along with the written text. The papers must be between 6,000 and 10,000 words in length. The first prize paper will be entered in the national ASEEES competition for the best graduate student paper presented at a regional affiliate conference.
