Bristol Translates summer school takes place entirely online, making it accessible to participants around the world. Groups will be limited to a maximum of 12 students.
There will be three full days of translation workshops, on Monday 4, Wednesday 6 and Friday 8 July, while Tuesday 5 and Thursday 7 July will be devoted to sessions on genres and tools as well as professional and networking sessions. These include panels with publishers and themed sessions on translating for the theatre, translating children’s and young adult literature, the use of CAT tools in literary translation, translating video games and poetry translation. There will be expert speakers discussing translator contracts in the UK and in the USA, and a presentation by English PEN.
We are delighted that the keynote lecture entitled “A Life in Translation” will be given by renowned translator and scholar Professor Susan Bassnett from the University of Warwick.
Another highlight will be a presentation of Comma Press’s translation book list and business model, together with a translation competition offer (language to be confirmed). The winning entrant(s) will be offered a publication opportunity with Comma.
Eligibility
Since the workshops are all into English, it is essential that all applicants have excellent command of English (mother-tongue level or language of habitual use) and superior proficiency in their source language. Note that for Japanese, applicants should have at least Level 1 or 2 of the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test).
In addition to workshops dedicated to translation from a single language, we are pleased to offer a multilingual workshop, led by Daniel Hahn. You are welcome to apply for a place as a translator from any language into English that is not represented in any other workshop.
We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us. We welcome applications from refugees and asylum seekers.

Fees and Bursaries
- Full fee: £315
- Early-bird fee prior to 31 March 2022: £280
- Current University of Bristol student: £230 (15 places)
The fee includes attendance at the workshops, admission to talks and panel sessions as well as socialising and networking opportunities.
The University of Bristol, together with our sponsors, are offering 15 bursaries which will cover the full cost of fees (£315). To be eligible for the Bristol Translates Summer School bursary, you must:
- be a person on low-income (less than GBP 19,200 gross),
- have applied by 28 February 2022 for a place on the Bristol Translates Summer School and
- be a resident in the UK.
To ensure fair distribution of the available funding, applications will be assessed by a panel including the two directors of the Bristol Translates Summer School and the Academic Lead.
Information provided in the Applicant’s personal statement will be used to select recipients of the bursary. The decision will be based on evidence of:
- the Applicant’s motivation and commitment,
- the anticipated benefits to the Applicant of participating in the Summer School and
- the Applicant’s intentions and plans for a career in translation.
