Online Russian Courses (Middlebury College)

The Kathryn W. Davis School of Russian at Middlebury College is excited to offer two 4-week online courses this summer, both intended for students at the high intermediate to advanced levels. Enrollment is each course is limited to 12 students, and there is no fee to apply this year. The deadline to apply is May 15.


The 4-week Online Refresher is designed to reactivate speaking skills, vocabulary, and functional grammar through a wide range of engaging activities. The Refresher is intended for students with a solid foundation in Russian (at least three years of study or the equivalent) who have been away from the language for a while, from a few years to a few decades. This online program is not for credit and should be compatible a wide range of work and family schedules. The Refresher is also offered in a 1-week residential immersion format on the Middlebury campus.
The 4-week Advanced Online Course is a “deep dive” into a special topic in Russian grammar, offered for 3 semester hours (1 Middlebury unit) of credit. This summer’s topic is Russian verbs of motion. Applicants should have at least three years of language study (or the equivalent) at the university level. This course will review basic verbs of motion and introduce more complex forms and their usage. It will examine the use of aspect in verbs of motion and the many colloquial phrases that use them. Assignments will include more traditional exercises as well as reading, writing, and listening work that features verbs of motion in authentic texts.
