The Department of Slavic, German, and Eurasian Studies at the University of Kansas invites applications to its Slavic M.A. and Ph.D. programs.
KU SGES has a comprehensive program in Russian literature, as well as one of the few full-service Slavic linguistics programs nationally. Ours is a Slavic program in a proper sense, with extensive expertise in Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian, Czech, Polish, Slovene, and Ukrainian languages and cultures. We also offer courses in Turkish and Persian.
In addition to the traditional M.A. focused on literature/culture and linguistics, we also offer an interdisciplinary M.A. in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, run in cooperation with the KU Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (CREES). A joint REES M.A. and J.D. degree track is also available.
The uniquely interdisciplinary nature of our program means that our students engage in the study of literature alongside the study of linguistics and language pedagogy. Our department offers faculty mentorship for students in areas of Slavic literary and cultural studies (including literary styles and genres; questions of empire, colonialism, postcoloniality, and decolonization; violence and trauma studies as reflected in literature; gender and sexuality; film, theater, and folklore) and Slavic linguistics (historical phonology, grammatical semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, language contact, and second language pedagogy). Close ties with other KU units, such as the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, the Program in Jewish Studies, the Department of History, the Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, the Department of Film and Media Studies, the Department of Theatre and Dance, and the Graduate Certificate Program in Second Language Studies make it possible for graduate students to complement their major field of study with additional minors.
The REES M.A. degree combines courses in language, literature/culture, history, and social sciences and benefits from participation of faculty from all across campus.
Incoming graduate students who continue to the Ph.D. program are offered five years of support (full tuition waiver and a stipend) through graduate teaching assistantships. FLAS fellowships are available through KU CREES. The department also offers modest fellowship support for students interested in the study of Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian, Czech, and Ukrainian (please contact the department for more details).
