Grad Programs: Slavic, German, and Eurasian Studies (University of Kansas)

Deadline: January 5, 2024

The Department of Slavic, German, and Eurasian Studies at the University of Kansas invites applications to its MA and PhD programs.

We have vibrant graduate programs in Slavic languages, linguistics, literatures, and cultures, with extensive expertise in Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Slovene, and Ukrainian. We also offer courses in Persian and Turkish. MA students can choose between two concentrations: Slavic Languages and Literatures or Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. PhD students can benefit from our comprehensive program in Russian literature, as well as one of the few full-service Slavic linguistics programs nationally. We also welcome students interested in pursuing a PhD concentration in another literature that the department offers, such as Czech, Polish, Ukrainian, or Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian.

The uniquely interdisciplinary nature of our program means that our students engage in the study of literature alongside the study of linguistics and language pedagogy. Our department offers faculty mentorship for students in areas of Slavic literary and cultural studies (including literary styles and genres; questions of empire, colonialism and postcoloniality; violence and trauma studies as reflected in literature; gender and sexuality; film, theater, and folklore) and Slavic linguistics (historical phonology, grammatical semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, language contact, and second language studies). Close ties with other KU units, such as the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies, the Program in Jewish Studies, the Department of History, the Department of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, the Department of Theatre and Dance, and the Graduate Certificate Program in Second Language Studies make it possible for graduate students to complement their major field of study with additional minors.

We offer robust job market support as well as a number of ongoing professional development opportunities, such as workshops on article writing, digital humanities, and public scholarship. During their time at KU, Slavic graduate students have the opportunity to acquire a variety of teaching experience, including teaching to non-traditional demographics such as high school students and the military.

Incoming graduate students who continue to the PhD program are offered five years of support (full tuition waiver and a stipend) through graduate teaching assistantships. Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships are available through the KU Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies. There is also modest fellowship support for students interested in the study of Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian, Czech, and Ukrainian (please contact the department for more details).

Our intellectual community flourishes in the vibrant beatnik town of Lawrence where affordable living is matched by an exceptional library and opportunities for intellectual and cultural exchange in conjunction with the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies (CREES). We encourage you and your students to learn more about academics in Slavic at KU through exploring our departmental website (https://sges.ku.edu/).
The priority deadline to apply for Fall 2024 is January 5, 2024. Applicants should submit their materials online at https://gradapply.ku.edu/apply.
