Summer Program: Politics in a Democracy Under Stress (Bulgaria)

Deadline: January 10, 2024

Join our flagship Summer Academic Program: Politics in a Democracy Under Stress: Bulgaria. The program will be held in June 2024 at AUBG’s campus in Blagoevgrad and in Sofia, Bulgaria.

We created the Politics in a Democracy Under Stress Summer School in cooperation with Georgetown University’s MA in Democracy and Governance. For its inaugural year, we gathered 16 graduate and undergraduate students and faculty members from three leading US institutions, Georgetown University, Princeton University and Washington and Lee University. Building on the successful first iteration, we are happy to invite you to participate in the summer 2024 program as we believe the University of Texas-Austin and the CREEES will benefit greatly from the hands-on experience. The aim is to build a community of academics and experts who are aware of the problems, challenges, and opportunities before transitional democracies in the Balkan region, having built tight relations with local communities, civil society, experts and scholars for future collaborations.

Over the course of eight days (Sunday to Sunday), participants will undergo intensive lecture and workshop sessions, followed by cultural trips and high-level visits and keynote dinners. Only in-person participation is allowed due to the nature of the program. The total cost for the whole program (accommodation, meals, on-the-ground transportation, participation fee and lecturers’ fees) is $1700 per person. However, we can discuss a discount depending on the number of participants from your program/university. Lastly, places are limited, so please come back to us before January 10, 2024.

I have attached a short leaflet, describing the experience of last year’s cohort for your information. As a member of the organizing team, I would be glad to get in touch and share more information on our experience, ideas and aims. I am always available for a short online meeting at your convenience too.
