Society for International Affairs Scholarship

As part of their educational mission, SIA has established a program that awards scholarships to students with a demonstrated interest in the field of international trade or related fields of study. Our hope is that the scholarship program will serve SIA’s members while also encouraging and equipping individuals to pursue a career in international trade. It is no secret in the age of Export Controls Reform (ECR) that the field is growing, and industry as well as the government have need for qualified professionals. Graduate and Undergraduate Essay Contest on Dostoevsky-Related Topics

We are excited to announce that the Readers’ Advisory Board of the North American Dostoevsky Society is running another student essay contest! This year, we are looking for outstanding undergraduate- and graduate-student essays on Dostoevsky-related topics. Nominate your best students… or nominate yourself! Undergraduate CFP

The North American Dostoevsky Society (NADS) invites IDS/NADS members in good standing to nominate outstanding student essays on Dostoevsky-related topics. (If you are not a member of IDS or NADS, you can join at https://dostoevsky.org/). Students are welcome to nominate their own work, in which case IDS/NADS membership is not required. The topic is open; however, Dostoevsky and his works should be the main focus of the essay. The winner of the undergraduate contest will receive free membership in NADS for one year and a Dostoevsky-themed swag.

Outstanding Essay Prize – Central / East / South European Cinema and Media Studies

The chairs of the Central / East / South European Cinemas Scholarly Interest Group at the Society of Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS)mare pleased to announce the seventh annual prize for an outstanding published essay in the field of Central/East/South European Cinema and Media Studies. Submissions will be judged by a panel of experts, and the winner will be announced in time for the upcoming 2021 SCMS meeting (which this year will take place online). The winner will be awarded a cash prize of $500.

Resource: Open Access Book: Translating Great Russian Literature: The Penguin Russian Classics

Dr. McAteer’s book should appeal to anyone interested in the history of translation from Russian, or indeed the histories of individual translators, or possibly anyone who has ever read a Russian novel as a Penguin Classic. She focuses on the cohort of translators who worked with Penguin in the 1950s to bring out the first batch of Penguin Russian Classics, including David Magarshack’s famous versions of Dostoevsky, but she continues her survey through the following decades, examining such hot spots as the race to publish Solzhenitsyn in English or the fates of women translators like Babette Deutsch. And most usefully, this book can be read or downloaded for free anywhere in the world, so it is easy to access or include on a reading list.

Max Kampelman Fellowships (Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe)

The Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe seeks candidates for its Max Kampelman Fellowship program. Named for a longtime U.S. Ambassador to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, Kampelman Fellows represent the next generation of American leaders in security policy, human rights, and strategic communications.

Kampelman Fellows join a team of world-class experts at an independent, bicameral, bipartisan, inter-branch federal agency. The Helsinki Commission advances American national security and national interests by promoting human rights, military security, and economic cooperation in 57 countries. Fellows regularly interact and work on policy with Congressional offices, executive branch officials, foreign diplomats, civil society, and the broader policy community.

Doctoral Dissertation Grant Program (Fahs-Beck Scholars)

Deadline: April 1, 2021

Grants of up to $5,000 are available to help support dissertation expenses of doctoral students in the United States and Canada whose studies have the potential for adding significantly to knowledge about problems in the functioning or well being of children, adults, couples, families, or communities, or about interventions designed to prevent or alleviate such problems. The research for which funding is requested must focus on the United States or Canada or on a comparison between the United States or Canada and one or more other countries.

Fellowships for Doctoral Candidates at The University of Texas at Austin (American Association of University Women)

Deadline: March 22, 2021

An endowment fund at the University of Texas was established with our first contribution of $1,100 in 1934.  Contributions were made to this fund over a period of years, until the endowment reached sufficient size to support awarding of annual fellowships.  Mildred Englert is the branch member whose donation completed the endowment.  The Austin Branch has awarded graduate fellowships yearly since 1985 to women who are doctoral candidates at The University of Texas at Austin.  Beginning with the 1985-1986 academic year, ninety (90) women have received fellowships from our branch, to financially assist them in completing the final year of their doctoral studies.
