Assistant Director, Institute for European Studies and Polish Studies Center

Manages all day-to-day operations of both the Institute for European Studies (EURO), a Title VI Comprehensive National Resource Center, and the Polish Studies Center (PSC), including administrative functions, programming, and outreach. Serves as the principal administrative liaison between EURO and PSC and their various constituencies within and beyond the IUB campus. Specifically, this position manages and implements the EURO Title VI grant; identifies and writes new grant proposals for EURO and POSC; works with the director of EURO to enhance student recruitment; Promotes and advertises EURO’s wide range of degrees and certificates; Searches out curriculum development opportunities and coordinates course submissions; oversees the administrative and financial functions of EURO and POSC; coordinates EURO and POSC programming and student support; hires and supervises GAs and hourly staff; and directs outreach activities to K-12 students and teachers, academia and general audience. In collaboration with the Director of Institute for European Studies and the Director of the Polish Studies Center, the assistant director will also help create new strategic directions and plans for both centers, as well as maintain communication with and support of affiliated faculty. The Assistant Director manages both units’ institutional capacities and oversees the grant making and program activities in both its academic and outreach components.

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta invites applications for the tenure-track or tenured position as Kule Chair of Ukrainian Ethnography at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, effective July 1, 2020. Candidates will already hold the rank of Associate Professor or equivalent or higher at the time of appointment. The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent in Ukrainian Folklore or related discipline (such as Cultural Studies, Ukrainian Studies, Slavic Studies, or others), native or near-native proficiency in Ukrainian, an excellent record of significant high-quality publications, and demonstrated teaching excellence.

Study Abroad: Field Archaeology Excavation and Survey (Transylvania)

Dacia (i.e. modern historical Transylvania) was, arguably, the most important frontier of the Roman Empire: its gold and silver sustained the collapsing imperial economy for two centuries. However, the “imperial idea” on the Eastern European Provincial frontier was more complex than Rome ever expected it… and it even outlasted the idea of Rome itself. Local Roman Provincial realities, born out of economic, cultural, social and political creolization, constant and dynamic negotiation of power, and shifting populations, have outlived the ideological centers that have claimed historical ownership of these regions, creating their own distinct expressions of identity.

Lang. Training: Warwick Translates Summer School

“Warwick Translates Summer School” offers the opportunity to translate texts across the literary genres into English, working with leading professional translators. Groups will be limited to a maximum of 20 students to allow for individual attention. Places will be allocated on a strictly ‘first-come-first-served’ basis.

The course will be taught in an all-day workshop environment using a variety of texts including non-fiction (essays, journalism, academic) and fiction (poetry, fantasy, children’s literature, crime writing). Lunch time events will include discussion panels with publishers and editors. Evening events will include a Translation Slam and a keynote Lecture by Preti Taneja: ‘Translating Shakespeare in conflict and post-conflict zones: the challenge to “universal” human rights’.

Prof. Devt: Summer Research Lab (University of Illinois)

For over forty years, the Summer Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has provided scholars from around the world with the opportunity to work in our Library’s famous collections in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies.

We are pleased to announce that we will be holding the Summer Research Laboratory again this year, from June 10 to August 2, 2019. The SRL is open to all scholars with research interests in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies. Graduate students, academics, independent scholars, librarians, and government employees are encouraged to apply.

About the Program

With hundreds of thousands of volumes in Russian, East European, and Eurasian languages, alongside extensive microfilm collections of rare and archival materials, the University Library at Illinois ranks among the best research collections in the world. The SRL provides scholars with the opportunity to work extensively with these resources, at any stage of their work. Many important books and articles have been written in our collections over the years. Graduate students find a trip to Illinois an excellent way to plan their research and begin work on their dissertations.

Funding: HI USA Explore the World Travel Scholarship

Hostelling International is offering five $2,000 travel scholarship exclusively for Austin area residents!

The program is called Explore the World, and it’s administered by the nonprofit organization, Hostelling International USA (HI USA). HI USA is committed to creating a more tolerant world, and these scholarships are for young travelers inspired to make the world a better place, but lack the financial means to go abroad.

The scholarship is open to individuals, ages 18-30, who will engage in an educational or service learning component during their trip.  Eligible candidates must also meet specific financial need requirements. More information can be found at www.hiusa.org/travel-scholarships.

CFP: 2019 ASEEES First Book Subvention

Deadline to apply: February 1, 2019 and September 1, 2019

In 2014, the ASEEES Board of Directors voted to dedicate $10,000 per year from the Association’s endowment dividends for subvention of books by first-time authors who have already secured publishing contracts. Multiple awards of up to $2,500 will be made on a competitive basis each year, with funds paid directly to the press.

A multidisciplinary committee of senior scholars will evaluate applications; the committee will also include a publishing professional as a non-voting member who will advise on budgetary matters. In deciding how to allocate these funds, the committee takes into account both the scholarly significance of the book and the demonstrated need for subvention support. Applications are invited from all disciplines.
