Funding: TCE Summer Internship Fund

Deadline: May 29, 2023

Through this Texas Career Engagement grant, students receive funding of $15 per hour up to a maximum amount of $2,000 based on internship hours completed between the first and last class day of the summer (June 1- August 11, 2023). Selected students will receive funds in two disbursements: the first after the application has been accepted and the second in the last weeks of the internship. The internship host-employer is required to submit a confirmation of the intern’s hours for the second payment to be disbursed. The amount of the funding may be recalculated based on the final total hours completed at the internship.

Students who have unpaid internships and who receive additional UT funding for the internship – such as a stipend from your department or other UT office – can apply for the TCE Internship Fund.

The amount of this fund is limited and applicants are prioritized by financial need; therefore, not all applicants will be selected to receive funding.

Internship: SRAS Summer Online Internships

Deadline: May 25, 2023

We are pleased to announce that SRAS will be offering free winter break online research internships. Interns who complete the program receive scholarships for study abroad or online study with SRAS.

These will be flexible – based on student interests and student schedules – and allow participants to build up their portfolio of published works via the SRAS Family of Sites.

Current topics of interest center on the Baltics, Eastern or Central Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. They include sport teams, movies, video games, fashion brands, and music groups/artists based there. We will also be open to articles on art, contemporary literature and food. We are particularly interested to hear from heritage speakers of minority languages or Caucasian languages who can research in those languages, provide first-hand perspectives, and potentially contribute to our Talking Phrasebooks. Students with an interest in translation are also encouraged to apply.

Application deadline is 25 May 2023. Internships will run from approximately from first of June to the end of July, but with a high degree of flexibility.

Seminar: Talk by Sarah Slye, “Does a Regional Framework Work for the Caucasus 1917-1921?”

Event Date: April 5, 2023

On April 5, at 6:30 pm Tbilisi time, the biweekly research colloquium of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research at Ilia State University will host Sarah Slye to talk about her PhD research, which she recently successfully completed at the Faculty of History at the University of Cambridge, on the Caucasus during the Russian Revolution and Civil War/Independent Republics period, asking the question that also constitutes the title of her talk: Does a regional framework work for the Caucasus 1917-1921?

Sarah’s thesis provides a regional framework for evaluating the flow of events in the Caucasus between 1917-1921 and for showing how the different experiences of different national groups fit together. It also presents various debates that were held at the time regarding what the best form of state structure(s) would be for the Caucasian nations and peoples in a post-Imperial order – and for the most part, regional structures predominated in the imaginations of the politically relevant figures of that time. Yet, skeptics continue to wonder if there is any regional perspective to speak of or not.

The event will take place in English via Zoom. Registration is required.

Job Posting: Health Education Volunteer, Moldova (Peace Corps)

Deadline: May 12, 2023

Peace Corps Moldova seeks Health Education Volunteers to work with children and adolescents (aged 8-18) throughout the country. Volunteers will support children and youth in developing life skills and knowledge for healthy lifestyles, including basic hygiene, prevention methods of communicable diseases (such as tuberculosis, viruses, gastrointestinal diseases, STIs, HIV, COVID), behavioral health (like physical fitness, stress management, healthy eating habits, reduction of alcohol or tobacco consumption, and violence prevention) as well as the prevention of substance abuse and non-communicable diseases (such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chronic respiratory difficulties). Schools are often the strongest community institution in Moldovan towns and villages, making students in these settings an ideal audience for needed instruction. The majority of Health Education Volunteers’ time is spent co-planning with school partners to perform formal and informal health education activities using student-centered techniques. It also involves co-teaching with local teachers and other partners in the local language to increase youth’s knowledge and skills so they lead healthy lives and transition into healthy, productive, and engaged adults. The Volunteer’s formal teaching schedule is from Monday to Friday.

In addition to their teaching responsibilities, Health Education Volunteers support the research and development of evidence-based, supplementary teaching materials for health lessons, campaigns, and clubs through close collaboration with their school staff and community professionals. Volunteers also organize and conduct after-school activities including health clubs, health and life skills day camps for school-aged youth, and health awareness campaigns for youth and adults with the involvement of school youth leaders. Activities are generally developed in collaboration with local professionals and parents as well.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Special Issue of RLJ (December 2023):

“Teaching Media and Media Literacy”

Guest Editors:

Dr. Karen Evans Romaine, University of Wisconsin-Madison, evansromaine@wisc.edu

Dr. Liudmila Klimanova, University of Arizona, klimanova@arizona.edu

Purpose, aims, and foci of the special issue:

The Russian invasion of Ukraine and tighter restrictions on press freedom in Russia have caused instructors of Russian to focus attention more sharply on teaching information literacy skills. Instructors of Russian have taught media courses for decades, but the necessity to enable students to develop their interpretative skills for various forms of media has grown significantly over the past year. This issue of RLJ invites articles on all aspects of the teaching and learning of media in Russian, from news to social media, to discussions of censorship and self-censorship in the language and culture classroom, to teaching critical thinking skills through media broadly defined.
