NEH Fellowship for Senior Scholars [ Faculty ]

The Center offers a fellowship to senior scholars through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The award supports original research at the Center in the humanities, including but not limited to Jewish studies, Russian and East European studies, American studies and Germanic studies, as well as musicology, linguistics, anthropology, sociology and history. Applications are welcome from college and university faculty in any field who have completed a PhD more than six years prior to the start of the fellowship and whose research will benefit considerably from consultation with materials in the collections of the Center’s partners – American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Fellowships carry a stipend of up to $50,400 for a period of one year. Fellows are expected to conduct original research at the Center, deliver at least one lecture based on the research conducted, actively participate in the scholarly community at the Center, acknowledge the Center and NEH in all publications resulting from research completed during the fellowship, and submit a report upon completion of the fellowship describing the experience.

Balkan Language Initiative (BLI)
The American Councils Balkan Language Initiative provides graduate students, advanced undergraduates, working professionals, and scholars intensive individualized instruction in the languages of the Balkans. Participants may choose to study one of 5 regional languages including: Albanian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Serbian. (Language prerequisite: two semesters of the target language or a related language)

American Councils Study Abroad would like to remind all that applications for spring 2018 intensive language immersion programs are approaching.
Eurasian Regional Language Program (ERLP)
The American Councils Eurasian Regional Language Program provides graduate students, advanced undergraduates, working professionals, and scholars intensive individualized instruction in the languages of Eurasia. Participants may choose from a wide range of regional languages, including: Armenian, Azeri, Bashkir, Buryat, Chechen, Dari, Farsi, Georgian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Pashto, Romanian, Tajiki, Tatar, Turkish, Ukrainian, Uzbek, and Yakut. (Language prerequisite: two semesters of the target language or a related language)
*American Councils is pleased to announce special funding provided by the U.S. Department of Education (Fulbright-Hays, Group Projects Abroad) for advanced students of Persian participating in the American Councils Eurasian Regional Language Program in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.)

Advanced Russian Language and Area Studies Program (RLASP)
RLASP offers participants the unique opportunity to study Russian language and area studies in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladimir or Almaty, while pursuing volunteer opportunities, internships, and cultural interests in an overseas immersion setting. (Language prerequisite: two semesters of Russian)

Asia in the Russian Imagination
The University of Utah’s Asia Center and Russian Program are hosting an interdisciplinary conference on Siberia, Central Asia, and the Russian Far East and North Pacific, organized around the theme of “Asia in the Russian Imagination.” The conference will be held at the University of Utah’s campus in Salt Lake City on March 23-24, 2018. Over the past three years, the Russian Program’s “Siberian Initiative” has sponsored talks on anthropology, environmental studies, history, film studies, and linguistics, and we are continuing this interdisciplinary approach to Russia in Asia/Asia in Russia at our conference.

During the summer of 2014, The Department of State launched a new internship program, the U.S. Foreign Service Internship Program (USFSIP), which offers a limited number of two-summer ten-week internships to interested candidates to familiarize them with diplomacy and the Foreign Service. The first USFSIP summer entails a few weeks of classroom instruction in U.S. diplomatic history, professional writing, foreign policy operations and career skills. That is followed by an internship on a policy desk at the State Department in Washington, D.C. The second summer involves an internship at a U.S. Embassy overseas. Selected students are paid an entry level salary and qualify for transit benefits in Washington. This program also pays for travel and assists with housing.
