Plan to join us for the annual Western Association for Slavic Studies (WASS) conference. This year our host organization, the Western Social Science Association (WSSA), will be welcoming its 2,000+ members and participants to the Hyatt Regency San Antonio Riverwalk, always a great site for a conference!

WASS invites proposals for individual papers, complete panels, and roundtable presentations in all areas of studies concerning Russia, the Former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and Central Asia. Topics related to our conference may include any aspect of culture, economics, history, literature, or politics with a broad chronological span from the Middle Ages to present. Contributions are encouraged from disciplines including (but not limited to): anthropology, archeology, architecture, arts, communication, cultural studies, demography, economics, education, environmental studies, ethnic and minority studies, film, gender studies, geography, history, international relations, Jewish studies, law, linguistics, literature, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, theatre, and travel.

Funding Opportunity: Critical Language Scholarship Program (DoS)

This scholarship is open to any students studying Russian, Persian, Turkish or Azerbaijani.

The Department of State is pleased to welcome American students to apply for the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program to learn critical foreign languages next summer on a fully-funded study abroad program.

The CLS Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 14 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

CLS, a program of the U.S. Department of State, is part of a wider government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity. CLS plays an important role in preparing students for the 21st century’s globalized workforce and increasing national competitiveness. Funding Opportunity: Fulbright-Hays Fellowships (ACIE)

American Councils for International Education is pleased to announce U.S. Department of Education, Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) fellowships for advanced overseas Russian and Persian language study. Fulbright-Hays fellowships are awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit. Fellowship awards are made in the amount of $7,000 for semester programs and $4,000 for summer programs, and are available on the following programs:

Internship: Culture.pl in Warsaw (Adam Mickiewicz Institute)

Intern at the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw for UT students and recent graduates

The Adam Mickiewicz Institute is accepting applications for semester-long unpaid internships during the academic year. The internship is open to UT graduate students and undergraduate students in their junior and senior years as well as recent graduates. Internships will take place at the Warsaw editorial office of Culture.pl, a leading website about Polish culture run by the institute.

Requirements:

• Current student at UT Austin
• Outstanding writing and editing skills (in English)
• Previous experience with website content management systems and/or social media
• Interest in Polish culture

Knowledge of Polish or enrollment in Polish language study or tutoring is preferred, but only required to receive travel funding.

AATT GRADUATE STUDENT PRE-CONFERENCE SECOND CIRCULAR

The American Association of Teachers of Turkic Languages (AATT) is pleased to announce the thirteenth annual “Graduate Student Pre-Conference” for graduate students in a range of disciplines enrolled at institutions in North America. This Pre-Conference was established to mark the 20th anniversary of the founding of AATT. The Pre- Conference is co-sponsored by the Institute for Turkish Studies and AATT.

The thirteenth annual Pre-Conference will take place on Saturday, November 18, 2017, at Georgetown University in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association, taking place in Washington, D.C., November 18-21, 2017. Pre-Conference participants are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to attend the MESA conference.

The Pre-Conference is designed to encourage research making significant use of sources in Turkish and Turkic languages by graduate students in a range of disciplines enrolled at academic institutions in North America. It will promote contact between students at various institutions and allow for feedback from faculty discussants participating in the Pre-Conference. Another goal is to help students progress towards more formal presentations at national conferences such as those of MESA, CESS, and organizations devoted to specific disciplines.

American Councils for International Education is currently accepting applications for spring 2018 semester Balkan Language Initiative.

The American Councils Balkan Language Initiative provides graduate students, advanced undergraduates, working professionals, and scholars intensive individualized instruction in the languages of the Balkans. Participants may choose to study one of 5 regional languages including:

  • Albanian in Tirana, Albania
  • Bosnian in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Bulgarian in Sofia, Bulgaria
  • Macedonian in Skopje, Macedonia
  • Serbian in Belgrade, Serbia or Podgorica, Montenegro
