Job: Director of the Slovak Studies Program (U of Pittsburgh)

The appointment begins with the fall term of 2019, with an anticipated start date of August 26, 2019. 

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for the position of Director of the Slovak Studies Program, pending budgetary approval. This appointment will be made at the rank of Lecturer; the initial appointment is for one year, followed by a three-year renewable term. Duties include:

  • Teaching  beginning, intermediate, and advanced Slovak language, as well as Slovak or Slovak-comparative literature and culture at the undergraduate level.
  • Non-teaching duties include oversight of Slovak cultural and outreach activities.
  • Scholarly publication and active participation in national professional associations is encouraged, but is not a prerequisite for appointment or renewal.

CREEES students are invited to submit works for consideration in the Spring 2019 publication of TROIKA, UC Berkeley’s undergraduate magazine in Slavic, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies.

TROIKA publishes academic writing, artwork, photography, creative writing, translations, opinion columns, etc.. If any of your students are interested in submitting work to the magazine for consideration, please have them email submissions or questions to troikaberkeley@gmail.com.

Submission Criteria:

  • Undergraduate work or art concerning Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies·
  • MLA formatting for academic papers
  • No more than 15 pages double-spaced (longer papers may be considered but will likely be abridged)
  • JPG/PNG formatting for images

Job: Summer Camp Counselor (Bemidji, MN)

Concordia Language Villages’ summer Russian immersion program “Лесное озеро” is actively recruiting a diverse pool for positions as counselors in our residential program for kids ages 6-18, for July 8 – August 11, 2018 in Bemidji, MN.

Counselors teach Russian language and culture in an informal program with extensive mentoring and support, and also lead “camp”-type activities (canoeing, art, etc.) and supervise cabins. These positions are appropriate for those with abundant energy and a dedication to and background in work with children and teens. They do not require teaching experience, as we expect to provide these staff with intensive teacher training, a very thorough curriculum, and in-service support. We anticipate that we will have a particular need for applicants with experience in outdoor skills/nature/ecology, folk art, guitar/balalaika/domra, Central Asia and/or the Caucuses. The Higher School of Economics International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences in Moscow, Russia invites applications for postdoctoral research positions in the history of World War II and Soviet society.

The job involves:

  • Working under the supervision of Oleg Budnitskii, the Center’s Director, and Michael David-Fox, the Academic advisor at the International Center for the History and Sociology of World War II and Its Consequences
  • Participants are encouraged to pursue their own research that is thematically related to the Center’s research project on the history of World War II and wartime Stalinism, as well as on other topics dealing with Soviet history and culture more broadly
  • Writing research papers for international peer-reviewed journals
  • Providing consultations on writing scholarly papers in English to Russian colleagues and students

Academic Job: Academic Director and Instructor (Bishkek)

The American University of Central Asia (AUCA), in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, is currently seeking an Academic Director and Instructor in Russian/Slavic studies for the Spring and Summer of 2018.

The successful applicant should hold a Ph.D., or currently hold the status of A.B.D., in the field, have experience teaching Russian at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, and preferably have experience with either administrative duties and/or Russian language course-design. Funding is currently pending, and will be provided by the Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS). Upon successful completion of the position the applicant may be considered for future
employment at AUCA.

The CLS Russian Program at AUCA in the summer of 2018 is designed for 15-20 U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students. The main aim of the program is to provide group-based intensive Russian language instruction and structured cultural enrichment and exchange
