The Department of World Languages and Cultures in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a term faculty appointment for Academic Year 2021-2022.  Rank will be dependent on education, experience, and stature in the field.  The appointment is a 9-month term position and will commence on August 30, 2021.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. or other terminal degree.  Highly qualified applicants with a master’s degree related to Russian language, literature and culture will be considered.  The position will require the incumbent to teach three undergraduate courses per semester (fall and spring) in Russian language.  All faculty are expected to hold office hours and participate in School and University activities and service.

The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at Florida State University invites applications for a one-year Postdoctoral Teaching Fellowship in Slavic Languages, Literatures and Cultures beginning August 9, 2021, with the possibility of renewal the following year.
The postdoctoral fellow is responsible for teaching courses that contribute to the Russian and Slavic Program’s curriculum and maintaining an active research program. The teaching load will be 2 courses per semester. Candidates should demonstrate ability to teach a variety of courses in the undergraduate curriculum (such as Russian Grammar and Conversation, Russian Culture and Civilization, Slavic Culture and Civilization, Soviet Russian Cinema, Russian Fairy Tales).

Acad. Job: Senior Lecturer in Russian (Ohio State)

The Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures at The Ohio State University invites applications for the position of Senior Lecturer in Russian culture, beginning August 2021. While area of specialization is open, we are seeking a dynamic and talented instructor of Russian language and culture who can contribute to department strengths in any of the following areas: film (Russian and East European), popular culture, gender, literature, migration studies, and translation. Qualified applicants must hold a PhD in Russian/Slavic languages and cultures or related discipline by the time of appointment as well as experience of teaching in North America. Fluency in Russian and English is required. Proficiency in another Slavic language is desired. The successful candidate will teach 22-24 credit hours per year, both in English and in Russian (lower level language courses are 4). The final course load will depend on service assignments which may include curriculum development, undergraduate advising, student organization mentorship, among others. This is an initial three-year appointment, as there is potential to turn into an assistant professor of teaching position.

Three Postdoctoral Researcher Positions

The “Modernizing Empires: Enlightenment, Nationalist Vanguards and Non-Western Literary Modernities” (NONWESTLIT) Project, funded by the European Research Council, will hire three postdoctoral researchers in the following areas:

–       19th century Russian literature and culture

–       19th century Ottoman literature and culture

–       19th century Japanese literature and culture

The project is a comparative study of cultural reforms, linguistic renewal and literary renaissance movements in three imperial traditions, Russia, Turkey and Japan. The project is hosted by the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LILEC) at the University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna).

Acad. Job: Lead Researcher of the De-and Re-Democratization Workgroup (CEU Democracy Institute)

The CEU Democracy Institute invites applications for a lead researcher of the De- and Re-Democratization Workgroup. The chosen candidate will be appointed as a Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow at the DI in Budapest and visiting professor at the Political Sciences Department of CEU (Vienna campus). The candidate will have a chance to build up an innovative interdisciplinary international research program looking for better ways of understanding the challenges of democracy in the 21st century. We seek applicants with a strong publication record in this research area. A proven track record in institution building is an advantage.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Establish and run an internationally recognized research program.
  • Collaborate with the members of the other research groups at the Democracy Institute.
  • Apply for and secure external research funding.
  • Train and supervise graduate students.
  • Participate in network-building, outreach and fundraising initiatives of the Democracy Institute.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a PhD, an outstanding research agenda, and a record of publications in peer-reviewed academic journals in political science and/or related disciplines.
