Position Description: The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at Harvard University seeks applications for a position as Senior Preceptor in Russian Language. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2018 with teaching and administrative responsibilities to begin in Fall Semester 2018. The Senior Preceptor will be responsible for teaching Russian at all levels. The Senior Preceptor will work with the Director of the Slavic Language Program to develop courses and materials across the program in Russian language, will assist with recruitment of students and expanding interest in the Russian language program. An interest in furthering broader Slavic Language Program goals is highly desirable, including research in Slavic linguistics and second-language acquisition as well as an interest in organizing and leading study abroad opportunities in Russian-speaking countries. Administrative duties will include supervision and mentoring of graduate student instructors and some supervisory duties for the Slavic Language program as needed. Interviews will be conducted by phone or Skype in April 2018. The position is for five years and renewable contingent upon performance, enrollments, and curricular need.
Basic Qualifications: Doctorate in Slavic Languages and Literatures or related discipline required by the time the appointment begins. The successful applicant should have experience in teaching Russian language at the university level and in language program and curriculum development, language program administration and instructor mentoring, student advising and recruitment, materials design, teaching with technology, and have native or near-native proficiency in Russian and English.

Additional Qualifications: Specialization in Slavic linguistics or second language acquisition preferred, or specialization in Russian language and literature.

Academic Jobs: Public Fellows Competition for Recent PhDs (Mellon/ACLS)

ACLS invites applications for the eighth competition of the Mellon/ACLS Public Fellows program. This year, the program will place up to 25 recent PhDs from the humanities and humanistic social sciences in two-year term staff positions at partnering organizations in government and the nonprofit sector. Fellows will participate in the substantive work of these organizations and receive professional mentoring. Fellows receive a stipend of $67,500 per year, individual health insurance, a relocation allowance, and up to $3,000 to be used toward professional development activities over the course of the fellowship term.

  • possess US citizenship or permanent resident status;
  • have a PhD in the humanities or humanistic social sciences (see note on eligible fields below) conferred between September 1, 2014 and June 22, 2018; and

The Department of Slavic Languages & Literatures and Humanities Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago are accepting applications for the position of a full-time Lecturer in Polish, for a one-year renewable term starting on 1 July 2018.

The primary duty is instruction and support in Polish, including two levels (6 courses) of language study per year. This course load will be supplemented by additional teaching responsibilities, to be coordinated by the department, including up to 2 courses from the following categories: Humanities Core courses, non-language courses (literature, culture, film, history, linguistics, etc.), or language courses in either Russian or Czech.

Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated expertise in current theory of second-language acquisition. Knowledge of one or more other Slavic languages, especially Russian or Czech, is desirable but not required.

The position is open to candidates who will have completed an advanced degree in an appropriate discipline (MA, preferably PhD) by June 30, 2018, have native or ACTFL superior-level proficiency in Polish and English, and have teaching experience at the college level.
